I hate when a company books my flights. I try to choose mainline aircraft and not regional jets with 20 year old pilots. However, people scheduling for a company don’t know any better and the next thing you know a propeller plane pulls up to the gate and you’re saying oh hell no!

Well think about it. You've landed your dream job, you're thinking about all the opportunities that's opened up. Maybe you'll eventually move up to a international carrier and see the world. Or perhaps this is just a stepping stone to landing a spot on the flight deck. This could be the career that will set you up for a satisfying life and comfortable retirement.
And then the plane rolls over and dives towards the ground.

Right, just crash if you're going to kill me I don't want to know. Their are several plane crashes that are particularly horrifying, the one where the kid was flying the plane. They pitched side ways, all the way down, all the way up, fell in a cork screw and recovered the plane but they didn't have enough altitude to get it back up and flying. They had fallen too far already. So everyone spent like 10 minutes knowing they were going to die, then recover the plane and think everything is going to be okay and the crash less than a minute later. The flight that the pilot flew inverted for a while before crashing into the ocean would have been pretty damn awful too.

I've always been interested in air crashes, but this is forever a very personal and poignant crash for me. My wife was on this flight, exactly one week before the crash. Indianapolis to Chicago and back, a trip that had been scheduled for the 31st but then changed to the week before, on the 24th. But for a small change in plans I would have known how she died, but I would never have met her, never have known her, loved her and married her. A few years back we headed up to Roselawn for the 20th anniversary of the crash, just to pay our respects. As the saying goes, "there but for the grace of God, go I."

Ugh, I remember this crash. I was living in Chicago and I had just flown back into town that afternoon. It was a memorable approach and landing thanks to the high gusty wind and sheets of rain.
I heard the de-ice boots inflate at least 3-4 times in the last 25 mins of flight. The boots dislodge the ice, which then goes crashing into the fuselage before harmlessly sliding off the trailing edge of the wing. But the sound can be very loud and not comforting, especially when you can tell the cockpit crew is really focused. Imagine sitting in a 55 gallon drum and having someone throw gravel at the barrel.
It was also a Monday -- and Halloween night, no less. I was supposed to go see the Bears play the Packers that evening on Monday Night Football in Soldier Field. But the weather was so bad (wind and 32 degrees and freezing rain at game time) that we decided not to go.
During the game the local ABC station (WLS) broke into the broadcast with news of the inbound ATR crash in Indiana. I had a co-worker whose husband was flying American Airlines from Indy to Chicago that evening, and she called in a panic.
We spent much of the rest of that evening trying to confirm whether he was on that plane or not. AA confirmed he had a seat, but could tell us little more at the time. After midnight, we finally learned that he was not. He had missed the flight. Wow. Not a great memory overall. So sorry for the crew, passengers and loved ones.

I remember when it happened, I was depressed to find out that a professor I knew at the time while in grad school was on that flight. Before Thanksgiving, I found this channel. I spent an afternoon watching quite a few of the videos. I was so sad when I heard about the many deaths but glad to hear that new checkpoints were instituted to make flying more safe. A few days later we flew to Dallas/Ft. Worth. Five minutes before landing our pilot came on the intercom announcing that one of the systems had failed and we were flying on a back-up system. He wanted to warn us that when we landed we would see fire trucks on the runway. Our flight attendant would give us instructions what to do if he called for us to "brace...brace...brace..." Our flight attendant gave us the proper instructions and then added that when the plane landed we needed to get out of the door with the slide ASAP! Sure enough, there were firetrucks on the runway in three different places. The plane landed and then the trucks came to the plane to check to see if we were on fire (turns out that there was no fire). We then proceeded to the gate where we all got off the plane. Many people were on the ground racing to our plane to check it out. We weren't told what system had failed so I have no idea what the problem was. I'm glad to report that we landed safely and were ok. Thankfully, I can only imagine what it must be like to have the plane turn upside down or fire aboard. I know what went through my mind as I thought I could be dying soon. My husband and I were both thanking God for our safety as we arrived in the terminal.

I really wish that the producer of this channel would give us some sort of information about themselves I'd really like to know what inspired him/her to create this channel and a little background info, I mean the way these videos are made and research involved in order to meticulously include even the smallest of details included especially the the cockpit and instrument panel layouts each one an exact replica of the type of aircraft involved, and the somber piano and cello music fit perfectly with the gravity of these situations. This is the only aviation accident channel that I chose to receive all notifications. Give a thumbs up If you agree. Well I'll leave it at that and will be eagerly awaiting the next video from "The Flight Channel".

+Fish Lover. With the number of videos and the time that they take to produce, I just cant imagine anyone working in aviation having the time or inclination to produce and upload them, I imagine each video takes at least 6 hours to produce, maybe a lot longer.
The money from the advertising may be an incentive. This video alone would have made the up-loader around £400.

  • @deanfowlkes

I think that I just saw The Flight Channel say in this video that the de-icing boots on a plane “MELT” the ice on the wings.
The de-icing boots are rubber strips that have hollow channels in them. They are connected to plumbing that supplies bleed air or compressed air from the engine. When the pilot activates the boots, the air inflates the boots. This will break the ice and pop the ice off of the wings. Since the boots are only on the leading edge of flight surfaces, it will only affect ice on the leading edges. It will not affect ice further back.
Also, you have to continuously cycle the boots off and on. Let the ice build up a solid but brittle layer. Then, before the ice gets too thick, pop the ice off. If you don’t cycle the boots off, ice will form on the boots in the shape of the inflated boots. When you deflate the boots, you will leave a solid layer of hollow ice in the shape of the inflated boots with a gap between the ice and the wing. You will no longer be able to break the ice off. If you wait too long to cycle the boots on, it might be too thick to break or too heavy to continue flight. Either way, you will adversely affect the aerodynamics of the wing.

So wasn´t the problem retracting the flaps while overspeeding? Pitch up, flaps 15.Pitch down. The plane descends to 8000 and, at overspeeding, they retract the flaps. Since they retracted the flaps while descending, the autopilot disengages. When they reengage the autopilot, it tilts to the right, not only because the aileron moved but also the horizontal stabilizer moves. So keeping the flaps retracted sealed their fate. Or maybe they should have never extended the flaps a in the first place? Should they have only reduced the speed instead? It just sounds to me that ice had nothing to do with it. That´s my theory. But they said nothing on the behavior of the horizontal stabilizer.

    • @jaycee330
      @jaycee330 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@cfo875 Either not have retracted the flaps or extended them in the first place would have help to get out of the problem, but as they were in a holding pattern and needed to control speed, I can see why the flaps were extended. It would have been better in this case to keep the flaps.

Years ago I boarded an ATR flight on a very cold morning. A few of us approaching the boarding stairs noticed that both the tyres seemed somewhat flat with the sidewall reduced to about half the normal dimension. We sat shivering in our cold seats as the ground crew tried forlornly to warm the cabin by blowing hot air from an external heater on the runway via a duct through the front door. After about half an hour the engines had still not been turned on and the captain came instructed over the intercom that we would have to deplane and take a bus back to the terminal. He went on to inform us the reason was that a water tank had been drained and then refilled the night before but that someone had left the drain tap open during the refilling exercise and, as a result, tons of water had accumulated In the lower portion of the plane. Due to the sub zero temperatures this water had frozen solid and hence the squished tyres and futile heating. Ice is not to be underestimated.

I was at Indianapolis airport the afternoon this plane left for Chicago. Left off my wife there who was headed to Miami and then onto Venezuela. That plane was almost undoubtedly at the gate boarding or at least on the tarmac getting ready when we were there. After I found out about this crash it sent chills through my spine and I actually never told my wife. Good thing she didn't have to go through Chicago, she might have gone on that flight! This was when ATA airlines was still flying and they had a flight from Indy to Miami almost every day. Thank God!!

I had a friend that was a passenger on Eagle Flight 4184. I have read NTSB reports and have done lots of research on this accident. You have done great job researching the causes of the accident in my opinion. I remember the memorial service for my friend. He was a pilot and it must have driven him crazy to be a passenger before and during the loss of control.
Job well done on the video. Thank you for creating it in a well researched manner. Pilots use accidents like this to better understand how and why such things happen and to improve themselves to prevent a recurrence of an accident in similar conditions. Many articles have been written about this accident. IFR Refresher magazine had the most detailed research of this particular accident.

It's sad that just as with anything else, new safety things are put in place or improvements are only even made after a loss of life. In the ideal world, this wouldn't happen. Everything would have been thought of at the planning & design stages & there would be no loss of life &/or injury. I do hope that if someone one watches one of your video's that has lost someone or knows someone who has lost someone or knows someone who has been injured by a plane crash along the lines of one of your video's appearances the way you always do the "In memory" near the end of your clips. If It was me, it would be nice to know that someone took the time to recreate as much as possible what happened so that others can get an idea. As a note: De-ice boots don't "melt" ice. What occurs is that some ice is allowed to form. ar the propoer time, given the thickness of the leading edge ice, the boots "inflate" (in reality a vacuum is released) and.that expansion essentially causes ice to break off in chunks. Not an ideal system but it typically works on "rime ice."

I think this is the first domestic carrier AND first one in CONUS. Did you notice the hours the PIC & FO had? A lot of the big plane crashes on this channel involve foreign carriers, with pilots in command whose totals are half of what these guys had for Time in Type. That, and the fact that so many non-American students come to Embry Riddle, et al to learn to fly, it should tell us something about OUR flight training.
I wonder about foreign rules for BFR, and in the case of the crashes on this channel, how many foreign ATP's trained in the U.S. vs in their own countries.

There is more to this story. I hear it first hand a few times a year because I live somewhere that will never forget. I live in Rensselaer, IN just miles from the crash. I was not yet born but the stories I have been told will live on forever and haunt me and many others. The photos you see here are not far off from what it looked like when first responders arrived. Multiple counties had all hands on deck, Rensselaer police and fire department as well as the Jasper County corner arrived shortly after the cleanup had started. A family friend who at the time worked with the corner as well as the fire department recounted that he was approaching the crash on foot with body bags when another first responder told him "You won't be needing that." My mother who worked part time at Rensselaer Walmart at that time recalls a group of responders coming in and speaking with a manager. Shortly after employees were called to remove every single zipper bag from the shelves and pack them up along with multiple pallets from the back. I have spoken with many first responders that worked that night. In 2018 three small personal plains crashed in the span of three months. No one was seriously hurt but it was the talk of our little town, naturally, the recounting of stories of flight 4184 filled my show room for weeks following. One after another those who were there told the same tale. For days they took shifts walking the field and placing remains in small bags. Everything left behind could fit inside a small bag. Later the families of the victims visited the crash and criticized Newton County for not being more careful with the clean up after finding more remains themselves. The crash itself is marked with a road side memorial on N 400 E and the field is still farmed. This crash will remain on this small towns heart forever.

I was 8 years old when this crashed happened near where is grew up, I remember this day vividly. The weather was horrible even for northern Indiana standards. While out trick-or-treating that evening it was if every siren in 50 mile radius was sounding truly a surreal experience. thanks for this excellent recreation of that sad day.

Tough luck for Amanda H. Her first...and last day on the job.
NTSB and FAA should have reprimanded atc as well for keeping the plane in a holding pattern so long in icey conditions.
