I know there are a lot of people who didn’t like the ending and wished it was happier but the author made this movie about a friend who lost the battle to cancer l sure that brings an even deeper meaning to this movie. Please don’t discriminate the author for not having the best ending in the world. I think authors meaning to this movie was that enjoy the time that you have because though a my seem nothing last forever.

I just wanna share this as well, I saw a comment saying "I think this shouldn't have season 2 because he wanted to disappear bla bla (i forgot)" well, im so sorry but I totally disagree. Okay so first of all, he didn't want to disappear, in my opinion it's more like when he hugs hotarubi he will accept that he will be gone. It's totally different from wanting to disappear. But we all need season 2 because it's more like a flashback. We really didn't get to see what life did Hotarubi had.
i think when people say he wanted to disappear, they mean before he asks hotaru to hug him. gins constantly telling her it was okay to forget him, and gives her his mask just before he grabs the human kid. if it hadnt been for the kid, im assuming gin would have disappeared because he wanted to be with hotaru. he wanted to touch her as much as she wanted to touch him. he loved her. he was willing to disappear to be able to convey how much with something as simple as a hug. so no, gin wasnt trying to make himself disappear faster by asking her to hug him in the end. i, personally, believe he would have tried to at the end of the night anyway, though.
SPOILER ALERT We all can be very angry at the little boy. But.. I am personally RELIEVED that the little boy trips and Gin helps him. Before Gin took off his mask, he said that he couldn't bear to wait for Hotaru again next summer. Then he took off his mask, put it on Hotaru's face, then kissed her (that kiss btw, it melted me). Then he told her to keep the mask. If we look at Gin's expression carefully after that, he frowned, as if he knew that whatever he was going to do (touch Hotaru) would hurt Hotaru--remember the scene when Hotaru fell down a tree when she was a little girl and Gin 'almost' touched her to save her, then Hotaru cried and made Gin promise to never touch her. And if we think about it, by touching Hotaru on purpose when Hotaru made him promise not to would be rather a selfish act, because if Gin disappeared, Hotaru would be the one to live in grief and not him. So when the boy tripped and Gin helped him, it made Gin get what he wanted (touch Hotaru) AND still keeping his promise to Hotaru (not to touch her on purpose). I don't know why, but I think if that boy didn't show up and Gin touched Hotaru on purpose, Hotaru would be angry with him and that anger may worsen her grief. At least this way, she knew that Gin kept his promise and she can 'grieve without any resentment'. But all this is just my humble opinion☺
what breaks me the most is how they were speaking before he disappeared . she felt that , that was the last summer they would be together. he gave her the mask everything was on instinct.
