Correct. The W140's R&D budget was $1 BILLION. The budget for the W220 was half that. That's why the W220, W221 had/have so many issues. I had a: 2005 S-430 AMG, repeated issues with ABC suspension systems, dash went out, keyless go buttons fell off, a/c fan motor went out. Then went to the 2008 S-550 4MATIC AMG. PANORAMIC sunroof issues, did not opt for the ABC suspension, brakes dics not big enough for such a heavy car. Now I have a W222. 2015 S-63 AMG Sedan. Love it, but 21.1gal fuel tank is TOO SMALL for such a large engine. I miss the 26.4gal from the W140.

Her W140 Mercedes smashed head-on into a concrete abutment at high speed, obviously a devastating accident condition. That the man who buckled up survived at all (and fully recovered) is testimony to the amazing structural integrity of the W140. But in a high speed accident, the safest and best engineered car in the world cannot save people who don't bother to buckle up.

I think you got the spec sheet for another motor... The 603.971 in that car only kicks out 148 hp. Torue is 228 ft/lbs. The later multivalve 606 diesels make a lot more power. The 603.97 never had a DPF / Trap Oxidizer. That was only on the 85-86 CARB spec cars, and 87 for all cars. Nobody knows why the 603.97s bent rods. What we do know is the late engines have thicker, heavier rods, oil cooling channels in the pistons (like the 3.0L engines). It affected a lot of the cars... probably 50%! The motors that didn't have problems though ran for a lot of miles. The 603.970 in my car blew up around 120,000 miles. Just curious: If you floor the go pedal, without pushing the kickdown switch, what RPM does it shift at?
We always called this W140 " Panzer “!! - It's really a tank😎 By the way, it was not the most beautiful one but one of best of all S'classes. Bill, watching one of your videos for the first time and based on your humour, I subscribed instantly. Putting the phone on Airplane Mode would've stopped incoming phone calls, anyway, this video is terrific and man, did you have me howling with laughter as you're FUNNY! Me, I'm afraid of the 140 as I wanted one either the 500 coupe or the gas 6 cylinder version sedan as I'm very apprehensive of the diesel and I LOVE diesels (I had an '85 300CD & '83 Audi 5000 turbodiesel), but this engine has been throwing rods since the 126 chassis 1987 350SDL (I believe that it's the same POS engine). Besides, a friend with Mercedes-Benz advised me to stay away from the 140 as they had problems with that chassis. I had a 1986 420SEL and that 126 chassis was probably the last great bank vault designed S-Class as every S-Class since the 126 has been questionable if not straight up junk. After 37 years of German cars, I'm done with them and ready for the reliable trouble-free (comparatively speaking) LEXUS. Good and funny review!
My rx350 vvti bolts backed out at 117k miles and even though it fit the reasoned for the recall, Lexus said my vin wasn’t on the bulletin. Goes to show, they are all pos.

I remember getting a car magazine when the W140 came out in 1991 and being completely blown away by it. It was one of my dream cars for the next 20 years. If reliability of an old German car concerns you, get a post-facelift Lexus LS430 Ultra Luxury. It's basically a Japanese take on the same concept.

Not pointed out, but this is a short wheel base W140. Not sure where he came up with the hp number, but that's way wrong. That's the horsepower for the S500 with M119 V8, not this diesel. The S500 (long wheelbase with the bigger M119) is the best all around W140. 220k on mine and with proper mtc, these are durable, vault like, suprisingly nimble sedans. I think the W220 wheels look just fine here and better than stock. I had them until switching to AMG Monoblock. Any well cared for W140 is a rewarding drive and the pinnacle of German sedans.
Since you seem to think you know so much, why not start up your own TH-cam Channel and leave the rest of us to enjoy this man's great level of entertainment.. who cares if he gets some stuff wrong? We're not gonna buy it, we're here for the witty repartee and good one-liners

Had one 92 SD 300.Purchased at 170k and drove till 440k then accident took the car from insurance co and sold 1000CAD. Solid car but ,mechanics make good money repairing It. MB Service is super expensive and they show you NO MERCY. Shocks and glow plug replacements,rear right window motor always problem. German cars are for RICH and over engineered. YOU WILL BE HAPPY WHEN YOU DRIVE it BUT UNHAPPY WHEN YOU TAKE IT TO THE MB SERVICE AND SEE THE REPAIR BILL. I am now driving my Corolla and very happy.
The engine you displayed is OM 603 D35 A with 12 valves (Single cam - OHC) 3500cc. This engine was rated from MB at 148hp 310Nm. His successor was OM 606 D 30 LA 24 valves ( dual overhead cams - DOHC ) 3000cc rated by MB at 174hp 330Nm. The only way you can get 300hp from 603 or 606 is by contacting DieselPumpUk 😅
The temp gauge is probably just a dirty contact in the instrument cluster temp gauge. The gauge has pins that slide into the cluster housing. Slide it in and out a few times! (yikes...)
i think its getting current from another dial with stripped out wire insulations, probably the oil preassure, whatever one is on the same cable and plug on the back of cluster

What this video unfortunately does not show: Has the temnp control 'calmed down' and show the right temperature which should stay calm' at 80° C after the car has been driven? Mine stays 'calom' at this mark, even after 400'000 km in more than 30 years of serve. But is is a 190E (buit 1986) which at its time was the smallest Mercedes which preserved the 'real Mercedes' comfort of the S-class.

Hey Bill. Do you know if that oxidizer trap you mentioned can be removed or disabled? I had a 85 123 turbo diesel years ago and loved it. I'm in Vegas and have a 2001 e320 now. Black on black. Not a good combo in this climate. Wish you'd done better filming the eagle but you were not prepared so what the heck. Maybe you can get a bidet installed in your house so you won't ever have to stand in line for tp. Lol

8:23 I don't know where you got your numbers from, but this engine made 110 kW, which is 150 HP. The successor, the 300 Turbodiesel, made 177 HP.

120k miles, that's it. I'm at 300k w my w124 2.5 turbo. No issues.

For me, ANY Mercedes-Benz diesel. I had a 1985 300CD that was absolutely wonderful. I loved the 1986 300SDL that even better.

The engine you displayed is OM 603 D35 A with 12 valves (Single cam - OHC) 3500cc. This engine was rated from MB at 148hp 310Nm.
His successor was OM 606 D 30 LA 24 valves ( dual overhead cams - DOHC ) 3000cc rated by MB at 174hp 330Nm. The only way you can get 300hp from 603 or 606 is by contacting DieselPumpUk 😅

I own a W222, and I still miss the W140, it was way more comfortable even though there was no massaging seats :)
The temp gauge is probably just a dirty contact in the instrument cluster temp gauge. The gauge has pins that slide into the cluster housing. Slide it in and out a few times! (yikes...)
i think its getting current from another dial with stripped out wire insulations, probably the oil preassure, whatever one is on the same cable and plug on the back of cluster

The 350 TD engine produced 150 HP, which was the weakest horsepower w140 but best MPG one,
the newer 300TD one produced 177 HP
I think that it is Bills imperfections that keep us all glued to his reviews. Who cares if he gets this and that wrong like HP figures and my have un-PC views on major issue and is a misogynist - We all got faults and this is light entertainment as well as informative. Good balance in my mind. A tour of Naples without the traffic would be great - didn't get there this month as usual and miss the place - got to wait til October now and hope the panic is over by then.

I really don’t think Bill is a Misogynist! (And I am a woman with the W140). I’ve watched quite a few of his reviews and i really don’t get that feeling from him. I think he’s hilarious and is very very different in his style of car reviews that is intriguing and definitely keeps me interested! If I got the idea of mysogyny from him, I’d never have watched as many reviews as I have and would have been LONG GONE…
Bill sure loves his narcotics and firearms..that's part of the reason I tune in to watch him do his thing and he DOES need a cameraman...he never shows us his face. But if the car is polished enough you can catch a quick glimpse of what he looks like.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BILL...YOU FRIGGIN ROCK DUDE...and I'm almost certain that the Canadians love him and tune in to watch him always mention them..probably has a hot Canadian girlfriend.

That grille is not original. It came off of a V-12 version. The Turbodiesel versions have fewer horizontal vanes.
Ah man, I knew something about that grill threw me off! Nice catch good Sir. The 600s had the most subtle little touches, and that grill was so sharp.

Over-Engineering is subjective. For instance, the hood’s service position is not a design that I would consider to be over-engineered.
Love the way you present your merchandise. Beautifully done. Your phone maybe also over engineered for you. As you don't seem to use the mute function when making videos.

What this video unfortunately does not show: Has the temnp control 'calmed down' and show the right temperature which should stay calm' at 80° C after the car has been driven? Mine stays 'calom' at this mark, even after 400'000 km in more than 30 years of serve. But is is a 190E (buit 1986) which at its time was the smallest Mercedes which preserved the 'real Mercedes' comfort of the S-class.
The REAL and the GREATES ERA of Mercedes Benz ended in 1999.....With the beautiful designs and engineering ...Nowdays THE Mercedes Benz looks like every damn car on the road...no whatsoever ORIGINAL DESING....( it's gone for more that 20 years).....No more STYLE.... no more prestige.....I think ( I might be wrong and if I am.. statistics will prove me right) Mercedes Benz is NO MORE FOR "elevated standard people"!.....ITS for every one....dumb and wise....smart and stupid....rich and poor...homeowners and homeless.....Mercedes Benz lost all the loyalty from its customers .....And its PRESTIGE in 21 CENTURY... These cars are NO MORE " THE BEST.....ITS nothing" like Honda Like Toyota.....Like EVERY OTHER CAR ON THE ROAD.......sad:( The TECHNOLOGY makes EVERYBODY EQUAL....And thas the saddest thing :(

I had a 85 123 turbo diesel years ago and loved it.
I'm in Vegas and have a 2001 e320 now. Black on black. Not a good combo in this climate. Wish you'd done better filming the eagle but you were not prepared so what the heck.
Maybe you can get a bidet installed in your house so you won't ever have to stand in line for tp. Lol
