I used to have the same issue on my 1973 Montessa Cota 247, it would regularly snap the key so i had spares, where I got them from I do not know but I used to have them. Glad you got it working anyway.
I've heard a lot of big singles can suffer from it. Someone even suggested welding the flywheel to the crank.
