This guy was clueless and couldn't answer 1 question Mike asked him. As a high school maths teacher, I can say the biggest problem with primary maths is the caliber of teaching. Most primary teachers have no maths ability (I know, I used to teach quite a few of them), the Numeracy project is an outdated teaching pedagogy as evidenced by the fact that since its introduction in 2001 that NZ maths levels have been declining and not recovered. Also dead right about, no dedicated textbook that primary teachers are using and looking at MOE notes on teaching maths, you almost need a PhD to follow them. I was helping a year 8 maths teacher with his maths and I gave him an assessment to see where his maths was. It came out at a year 4 level and he was happy as Larry teaching his year 8 class maths that he saw fit.

I’m a primary school teacher, and I have to say this is 100% true… it’s embarrassing how useless my fellow teachers are when it comes to maths and science… the worst part is they don’t even want to get better! I’ve tried so hard for so many years to push maths and science PD but there is no interest from leadership or teaching staff… absolutely disgusting.

Is this the same Jason Miles that went to school in Temuka in the late 80's?
I'm pretty sure I know him, I had no idea he went into teaching.
I really wish we'd had truancy officers in my last year at school, I could have completed my 6th Form certificate after a really bad accident at home that gave me 3rd degree burns.

I have home educated my children the past two years and can keep them at an average to above average level for literacy and maths with two one hour, one on one, lessons a week. I am using an American curriculum that is far superior to any New Zealand curriculum resources.
It is ridiculous that New Zealand doesn't have standardised textbooks that follow the NZ curriculum.
My children's behavior has improved, they no longer have to deal with bullying, and they are gaining so many life skills that aren't available to them at school.

Every aspect of NZ society is challenged. Because of its short sighted business and government so called leaders.
More skilled migrants must leave NZ to where they are valued. NZ has its head in its own backside while punishing the skilled worker with lower wage to make up for inflation...
How stupid NZ is to punish people in order to "manage inflation" while corporations make record high profit and governments waste billions of $.

Do institutions need to show clearly that with good education you earn more money.

behaviour, kids running around allowed to do as they like, in isolation as this is all teachers can do, no wonder kids not learning, slack parents, do not ask your kids to do something, tell them, they respect strong parents, not the wimps we have these days, twenty thousand ACC claims last year because of slack parenting, cages instead of showing kids how to be safe.

Well, you can thank Sue Bradford for that, kids KNOW they aren't going to be disciplined at all, so they can do what they like, un-punished.
We were disciplined in the 70's and the 80's and we knew why we got smacked and controlled ourselves accordingly.

@@mikeZL3XD7029 I know and the media called it a anti smack law, either thick or labour, it was the removal of the automatic protection against prosecution for reasonable force and parents should still have it,they have as long as no marks , this is not necessary anyway. the media added to the modern behaviour.

The maths has project book series that sets out stages of maths and what should taught. And literacy has similar.
So National talk was an Overton Window.
National will look at things and hopefully decile one school will excell. If they do all will excell.

Maybe the teachers need to pass a separate teacher knowledge test before heading to classroom (Maori literature not that important)

Is it time teachers went back to school? Personally, I don't think it would help. They're using the methods and tools that they've been given. An in depth review would probably take at least 18 months, cost the taxpayer dearly, and likely show nothing of relevance. Why? Because government departments and employees are picked (obviously), for their ability to follow policy rather than explore real solutions for this day and age.
Why can't they just take a step back and look at the problem from a different perspective? It's not hard but then again I guess some people just don't have that ability or desire.
If this problem has been ongoing for a while, just how long? 5 years? 10? Look at what changed during this time, identify some key indicators and work out a way to overcome them. Jeez, even get some footage of in-class teaching from the '60s or '70s and compare to what and how our kids are being taught now.
Drop all the gender/racial BS, it's counterproductive and bordering on harmful.
Get real is all I can say.
