- HIGHLAND PARK LAPIDARY -
Highland Park makes some high quality tools at reasonable prices. I have two of their tumblers. They're the most rugged tumblers I have seen. They also make a wide range of other lapidary tools, including saws, sphere machines, cabbers, etc. They also have the best price on grit that I have found.

Watching them throw good rocks back in: "No! Wait! I'll take that one!"
I left it right there for you!
Hi Rob! You picking up the flat black rocks brought back a memory! My ex and I went to Lake Superior for our honeymoon. I picked up enough of those to line the edge of the short walkway to our apartment at the back of his parents' home. My son inherited the house, and last time I was there to visit him, those rocks were still there!
Those are really cool rocks even if they're plain. It's amazing how consistently oval and flat they are.
Yes, you had an agate! I really like your friend, Eric. I hope to see him out with you more as the weather gets better! Great video!
I like the laser engraving you do on the flat pebbles Rob 🥰
100% It is a water level agate. Gorgeous too!
I came to that conclusion later after looking a little more closely.
I coined a new phrase when I was in Michigan 2 weeks ago... "nagate". It's what you say when you pick up a rock and realize it's not an agate! (You throw it over your shoulder and shout nagate!) I can't believe you dropped that piece of unakite near the beginning of the video!
I find so much unakite, I force myself to leave most of it behind. I think I brought home two small pieces that day from both beaches combined.
Absolutely an agate. Nice find!
Thanks!
I would definitely say a water level agate. I also bought a Kingsley North cabbing machine with your affiliate link today.
Oh boy! You're going to love that. Thanks for using my link, I appreciate that.
I don't have a big Agate to use to break it in, can I just use a field rock to break it in? I enjoy all of your videos thanks.
@@kayakfisherman1961 I don't think it matters as long as it's a hard rock. You want something without jagged edges too. A big piece of quartz or quartzite would probably work well.
love you're vids thank you
You're welcome!
Great to see the rock hunt videos are back. Thanks for getting out there!
Hi Rob! A new idea for a video is to kayak out to Middle Island this summer to do some beach rock exploration. This is a video nobody has done yet that would be extremely interesting and fun to see!
That's a good idea and something I've been thinking about. Stay tuned...
Great time on the big lake shore. Can't wait to get there this season.
Very cool finds Rob we will be out there in May any advice would be great thank you for all you do on your channel
My advice would be to bring someone with good eyes. My neighbor Sam is young and out hunts me almost every time. Otherwise, just have fun and pick up what you like.
@@MichiganRocks Thank you Rob for your advice hope you have a great weekend
Another fun adventure you both had.
You are braver than I, no cold for me. Love that you always take us along on your adventures ❤️
I really enjoy your Lake Superior hunting videos. I’m heading up to the Keeweenaw in a couple weeks.
Have fun!
Thanks!
Wow! Thanks, Laura. I'm not sure what I did to deserve that, but I appreciate it!
Thank you Rob great video!
Been working way too much past 2 weeks, now catching up on your travels and hunting! Thank you!
Thanks for taking the time to catch up!
Yet granite makes such lovely polished kitchen counter tops. Especially the red and pink variety.
Found this page the other day, love how wholesome and informative these videos are! Thanks for sharing your passion with us 😁
You're welcome!
Mystery rock matches the patterns and colors on your gloves . What a lovely day for rockhounding . You guys, found some beautiful stones ! Really liking your Lazer designs to add to your other great designs. Thank you for another great day in the UP !
I'm surprised that you could even see those mystery rocks. I guess that would make them even more mysterious.
The little agate you found looks like candy corn!😊
I bet you are glad to be back out at the beach!!! Awesome to watch your adventures, thanks for sharing!
I sure am!
Always enjoy your videos
I love the mystery rocks. Really nice agate finds. I can't wait to be able to get up there again. I did go to Spurgeon Point Light House a few days ago. I had a blast. Found a few perty rocks.
Great, I'm glad you were able to get out and find a few.
Awesome video, such a nice place to hunt.
Lots of pretty finds.
8:35 Looks a bit like the turtle rocks you make! Great hunting! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
A little. That was a really good one.
Agreed!! @@MichiganRocks
Looks cold. More power to ya'll.
It was a chilly day.
I just got back from my own rock hunt along Dallas rd in Victoria BC. I picked up some nice stones for the tumbler. Picked up many more that were pretty but didn't make the cut. It was a lovely way to spent the afternoon.
It's always nice to get outside whether you find anything or not.
@@MichiganRocks I wasn't the only one out it was a beautiful day.
Yup, definitely an agate. Seems like most rocks that have stripes are cool whether they're agates or not. Nice engraving!
But agate stripes are the best stripes.
I would definitely call it an agate, Rob! A beautifully clear agate.
I agree. At first, the color just threw me off. There's a lot of quartz that is the same color.
@@MichiganRocks That's completely understandable. It's a very unique and rare agate. You don't see very many that quartz, not that color.
I used to work in a small steel fabrication shop as a laser operator but we never done rocks. That is neat and I did not know that they can do that. Thanks for the guest star.
I don't know if I have the best laser for rocks, but I make it work.
Hi Rob! That first one was a water band agate. Beautiful! Love the laser work you do on the rocks! 😊
Thanks, Lisa!
I really want to pay a visit to Lake Superior. So many interesting finds!
I love it up there.
Wowza!!! If I visited that beach I’d have to bring my treasures home in an earth mover 🤪
My wife and I went up to Little Girls Point on the Western shore of Lake Superior. We found plenty of agates and banded iron. You guys did 👍 great also.
I went there early last spring and didn't find any agates, but the banded iron was the best I have ever seen.
@@MichiganRocks Banded iron is nice up there.
Cool adventure getting back there and always worth it!
It's not usually that bad. Actually, it was pretty fun in the Jeep. I just said a little prayer before forging ahead into the water.
Great hunt, Rob! And I love your laser rocks!
Woohoo! I’ll be up there in June and I can wait
I love the laser engraving. I use paint markers on flat Lake Ontario stones similarly.
That was a some ride in!
Weeee!!!
Beautiful!!!
Love your video , happy hunting, may you find something amazing!
How you cannot keep some of those beautiful rocks you find just hurts me!!!!! My visit up north gave me not very good weather, therefore, I skipped going to the lake. ☹️ Oh well, there is always another time!!! You guys sure looked like you were having a great time!!! I LOVE your red jeep, I'm assuming! Whatever it is, I love that color of red!!! I was excited seeing you pick up a bunch of those flat black rocks!! I have some flat rocks form Lake Superior, and plan on painting with the grandsons! But, with sports going again, we will probably be waiting for this Summer to paint them. Got the boys up north all pumped by bringing up the rocks, more paints, etc.!! Have a Happy Weekend!! Hi Nancy!! 🤗❤️👍🙋🏻♀️
I am still finishing up the last few rocks from last summer, so I didn't think I deserved many new ones. I only brought back about four or five rocks for the tumbler.
My vehicle is a red Jeep. It's a lot of fun when I get to places like that and just plow on through.
Some beauties today!
Awesome. I thought I was the only one picking those up to laser engrave!!
And I thought I was the only one. I guess there's at least two of us.
No question; agate. It amazes me how this remains a question and how many hope for agates when they aren't.
To clarify, translucent with bands. This is our generally accepted human construct and definition.
The color was making me question it a little. But then again those eastern U.P. agates come in just about any color.
Fun day
🙋♀️❤️. Fred aside, I'm pretty sure some of today's mystery rocks are Petrified Potato!
🙋♀️ Hi to Eric!
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: Those look they'd be fun to tumble or slab and polish.
I found an amazing greenstone yesterday! We had a snowstorm here today.
That's great, and that's not so great. Where is "here"? It rained most of the day in Alpena, but wasn't that cold.
2:50 of course its an agate Rob, why would you even question that one? Its pretty cool too
I don't know. Sometimes quartz or quartzite can look similar and have some very slight banding. the banding contrast was low enough on this one to make me question it at first. I decided it was one after further examination.
I hope you and Tyler from Agate Dad do a video together again sometime. That was fun to watch.
I hope so too. I was in his area last spring, but his wife had a baby about two days after I was there. He didn't think that was a good time to be away from her, and I think that was the right call.
I'm still waiting on a shirt that says, "That's a cool rock!"
I know, I need to find a new line.
@MichiganRocks no! I'm being serious! And it could havea pic of a Petoskey! I would totally buy it!
@@rockaholic4388 Maybe I need to make that then. I haven't put up a new shirt in a long time.
@MichiganRocks Yes! I will be the 1st to buy!
I love walking along and look for nice rocks, this is probably the nearest I will come rockhounding. I hope when I move that there will be better beaches (with pebbles) then it is where I live now, here is sand. One small beach have pebbles, but it is VERY dangerous to get there and there is not any gemstones either. That was nice, that bird done with laser on the flat rounded stone. Thank`s so much for the tour.
I think sandy beaches are overrated. However, if that's all you have, you might consider buying a magnifying glass or a microscope and remembering that sand is just really, really small rocks.
@@MichiganRocks Yeah
Keeper!
100% an agate Rob, but you knew that, it’s a sneaky way of getting comments for the TH-cam algorithm 😂😂😂😂😂. Lovely little stone
No, I don't do stuff like that very often. There's a lot of quartz on the beach and that one was not very distinct. Plus it was very light colored. I was definitely leaning toward agate.
Nice hunt. At first thought Sam looked different, ahh that's not Sam.
Definitely not Sam.
I think you needed the kayak for that trip in. That’s a lot of surface water.
It sure would have floated with no problem.
I like Red Rocks.
I do too. I also like green rocks. Pink rocks are also fun. Actually, Petoskey Stones are gray and I love those. I think maybe I just like rocks, no adjectives necessary.
Agate. ❤
Hello my brother
Big fan! You've always helped out when I had questions and I'm hoping you'll have the time to answer this one.... My wife and I are enthusiatic amateurs and are following the basic stage 1, 2, 3 and 4. Our polish is a 1,200 (not high, I know) but we're experimenting with using both tumblers and our 'Mini-Sonic'. If you can direct us where to find 'definitive' info on the polish phase (4). How much polish? How much water? The amount of days to tumble? The differences in the grit and water amounts with rotary vs vibro? Maybe you've already done a video on exactly these topics??? I've searched but haven't found one yet. Any help you can be would be very much appreciated! Rock on!
I'll help you out the best I can. I don't have a Mini Sonic. I do have a friend who is very good at tumbling who has several Lot-O tumblers (that's what I have) and also a Mini-Sonic. He tells me that in his Mini Sonic, he has to use twice as much grit and run them for twice as long to get the same results as in the Lot-O. Here's my method of using the Lot-O and rotary together: th-cam.com/video/hz2E0xJYEWY/w-d-xo.html
Here are some pictures of Chuck's rocks out of the Mini Sonic. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/93978/mt4-mini-sonic-batch
11:34 This is an agate too if you didnt know. Pretty cool I would cut it Maybe.
You think so? Eric thought it was too. I was leaning toward it not being one.
I think so, in your close up photo there is some slight banding in the bottom right, and that clear core is definitely chalcedony, I would probably bet there is some banding inside
Everything you pick up is beautiful….and then you toss it. Aaaargh.
Sorry about that. I try not to bring too many home. I like to leave a few for other people.
👁👁 Happy to drop by…🥶
14:20
I had a pet rock but it ran away
Put a leash on the next one!
When in doubt, cut it and figure it out.
Sure looks like an agate with bands at the top, quartz in the middle, and water level at the bottom. Am I seeing a hint of purple in the middle of the quartz or is it my imagination?
Sam thought he saw some purple too. It's very subtle, but I think there might be a tiny amount of amethyst in there.
13:26 When they have a soft spot it vugs me.
Ha ha!
Well Rob looks like Phil the ground hog was wrong about winter ending early.
We've had some really nice days too.
Agate with water level banding.
Definitely an agate.
🌷💎🌷
Hello Rob, I was wondering if you would make a cut list slash direction package for your
rock tumbling cabinet
Where you got your rollers, motor size all the good stuff
Thank you
Carl Zatsick
Farmington Michigan
Hey Carl, a friend of mine designed that and asked me not to share the plans. I have answered some basic questions in the comments. You might notice some contradictions, because I changed the pulley on the motor to speed the whole thing up a bit a couple years ago.

I see cool rocks in the periphery and I'm saying "go back, go back, I want to see that one" and you never go back :(
If only I could pick up the rocks everyone wanted me to.
Wow Rob maybe you can make worlds smallest Bonsai what do you think.
Maybe!
Rob, I believe he prefers his given name of "Frederick McRockerson."
Ha!
What is the machine that you used to cut the design in the stone? Brand/Model @ about 6:20
Algolaser Delta. Here's my review of it from when I first got it: th-cam.com/video/x1-7mrMYXJM/w-d-xo.html
Here are some Montana agates I engraved: th-cam.com/video/s1tNGH6_HGs/w-d-xo.html
Rob have you heard of Sudbury Impact and Thunder Bay etc.? I just saw a short video on it and wondered if you ever find any pieces..... The meteorite was about 200 miles wide or something like that, 20 miles deep?
I have heard of it. There was a woman who lived near me who was always looking for it and actually found some. She sent it to someone else I knew who took it to a geology professor she knew who made some thin slabs to look at in a microscope and verified that it was actually impactite. So fragments of that made it all the way to the Alpena area.
@@MichiganRocks Wow! Amazing.....Thanks Rob, take care
Totally an agate.
Hi Rob how are you doing?
I'm great.
What are the blue rocks that I see in the early part of the video?
They were probably black, not blue. I think some of those are graywacke. Some might be basalt. That's just my uneducated guess though.
New here, what does C A B stand for? Thanks 😊
I think you're talking about the word "cab". It's short for "cabochon". Cabochons are rocks that have been shaped and polished. They're usually flat on the back and domed on the front. They're used to make jewelry such as pendants. A cab machine is a grinder that has several wheels (mine has six) that go from coarse to finer grits. It's used to shape and polish cabochons.
@@MichiganRocks Thanks for the instruction , still learning
What would it take to get you to send me some rocks? 🙃 I’d love to get some of the material from over there. Y’all got a website or anything?
I don't sell any rock online. I leave the ones I don't want on the beach for the next person to pick up.
If in doubt….take it home.
I go the other way these days.
12:45 Conglomerate?
I was thinking it looked more like a breccia. My geologist son in law is sitting here with me and thought it looked like it was on the border between breccia and conglomerate since the clasts are somewhat angular and somewhat rounded. He was leaning toward breccia.
granite doesn't tumble well because you use a vibratory tumbler
certain softer stones have a problem with a vibratory tumbler
You've had better luck with a rotary tumbler? I usually have better or at least more consistent luck with my vibe than the rotary.
is there a reason why videos i watched keep showing up as new in my subscriptions ? its a real turnoff for me to waste my time every week clicking on something i already watched and licked.
I'm sorry that's happening, but I have no idea why. That's beyond the things I control.
Nice to be gettin back out there. I went to Sturgeon Point the end of February, lots of hounds out there👍
I haven't been out there this year yet.
WOW! Hi tech now! 🩷
