I Watched Evernden in Fürth,Germany at a challenger in 1992, when he lost to Marc Goellner. He seemed nevertheless quite in good mood!

Kelly Evernden came to Washington State as a 16-year old from New Zealand and under coach Forrest Latham, played at Yakima Valley Community College and now teaches near Seattle. He reached ATP #31 and defeated Michael Chang 60 60 once.
I played him three times, losing 2636 (I was nervous and asked for a pic and autograph), 5746 I relaxed and played well and I like to think he had to take me seriously) and 6161 (he was less friendly, and took care of business).
He’s a competitor. In the Pacific Northwest, we proudly cheered him on throughout his career.

Makes sense. Evernden was only famous among tennis aficionados. He wasn't like Connors, McEnroe, Becker, Lendl who the general public was aware of. He was the type of player whose achievements were generally getting to the third round of big events (as here) rather than actually winning them. But it's just incredible to do what he did with only one lung, and I think he had other injuries besides. I think the Evernden story is amazing and deserves to be better-known.
