Daniel Liu I just have Moroccan roots. I am not a real Moroccan citizen, but I got something to say on that. The Western Sahara is something that the Sahrawi's can't govern themselves and if Polisario would take over it would get corrupt af, if you compare it with similar occassions in the past with other countries. I think the Western Sahara should be autonomous but like being still a part of Morocco, so it won't turn out in a war zone with several parties disputing over the region. Look at Iraqi Kurdistan. They were a part of Iraq, but wanted autonomy so they gained it but they're still part of Iraq. Unity in some sense is better than separation.

Guys, I am from Ceuta. Most of the population here is Moroccian (Almost 80% percent) and almost everyone here prefer it to remain spanish. The big deal is that being this way, moroccians have the chance to have their sons born in the EU, in case they want to migrate to spain or any other country in Europe. And historycally speaking, Ceuta is the ONLY city in the whole of Spain which was given the opportunity to choose being spanish or not (Long ago), and we chose Spain. So, lots of people here talking about what should be the right thing to do around here... having no idea. If you ever go to Morocco (which is one of the coolest countries ever), pass by Ceuta for a little. It's really awesome here :) Hugs.
Daniel Moriarty Yeah that's true, most of the moroccans residing in Tetuan and Ceuta's surroundings prefer Ceuta to remain a Spanish city because they easily import many merchandise, and they're living from it
Daniel Moriarty what do you think about Gibraltar being British?. It's a very similar position to what you have in Ceuta. The Spanish want Gibraltar back even thow they have similar bigger territories in North Africa. The people in Gibraltar are of 95% Spanish origin, and have also had a referendum, and they voted 99% to remain British. I find it very strange and double standard of how Spain wants Gibraltar back, but is unwilling to give up its territories in North Africa or share sovereignty, even if that was against the will of the people of Ceuta and the others, but yet they expect at the very least shared sovereignty with Gibraltar, it's a bit hypocritical of Spain and have no moral authority on this issue.
You can't compare because historically ceuta and melilla (and much more in tjat coast) were part of spanish mainland even being a see beetwen those two lands (in the same way USA is still being USA at both sides of the 3 graeat lakes or florida).that IS BECAUSE Spain african mainland existed MUCH BEFORE the creation of Moroco, so in this case is not a "giving back aland to a country" as would be in the case of Gibraltar....here is no one to give somerhing back because was always spanish...would be a gift...what is not acceptable politically, hiatoricallyand culturally, in the same way that you cant divide Greece in several countries just because the mainland is aeparated by the Egeius Sea. Man I wish Spain got to keep Spanish Morocco. Spain would have been on both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar, making a bored tunnel necessary enough to build to link western Europe with western Africa. Unfortunately, the proposed dam across the Straits of Gibraltar to protect the Mediterranean coastal countries from coastal flooding by sea level rise certainly will not be built. A floating bridge is possible. And whether a dam or floating bridge were built, an underwater tunnel at each end would allow ships to still cross through the Straits of Gibraltar.
Aghilas No need to take it seriously :P I meant that mentioning the fall of Granada before mentioning the colonization of Africa gives the impression that the Spaniards were working and trying to colonize Africa since 1492. But RealLifeLore probably did it Intentionally as a joke.
yo yo the scramble for africa happened later and Spain wasn't a major power by then. Portugal created coastal colonies along the west African coast shortly after and the slave trade would begin around this time too, but none of that really had anything to do with morroco. The moors controlled most of iberia throughout the middle ages and this was like a revenge thing for them. The kingdoms of castille and aragon merged to create "Spain", took granada, invaded morroco, started the inquisition, and sent Christopher Columbus out west all around the same time. The all out scramble by Europeans, which you're talking about, to take over the African continent wouldn't start for another 300 years
***** true. But "Spanish" wasn't really a thing before the creation of Spain either. I'm not trying to say it was justified, but there was definitely a feeling of righteousness and animosity towards the moors as they conquered Iberia and pushed into Africa. This wasn't long after the crusades ended and the inquisition started to expel non christians from the peninsula

You forget to mention that when Spain kicked the moors out in 1492 and formed Ceuta and Melilla there was no Morroco, it did not exist yet, that came afterwards. The reason we still have that territory is because it would be a staging ground for another Islamic invastion. The reason Spain does not have muslim issues like France, Germany, Sweden, etc.. is because of these territories and that is the way it will stay. Do not compare that situation with Gibraltar.
First Spain didn't exist as well this time. Ceuta is much bigger than Melilla and they said the opposite . They say that these are the only parts of EU in Africa, and well Canary Islands??????
Nice video! But there are several details that should be explained. Since the current spanish and north african territories were ruled by carthaginians and romans, some of them evolved within the Iberian peninsula culture, and some other under the arabic influence (NOT the case of Sahara and southern areas). After the reconquista they were not returned to Morocco because Morocco did not even exist before reconquista. So we are not talking about "occupying" 500 years, we are talking about dominating cultures for two thousand years, and about Carthaginian, Roman, Arabic and Spanish empires ruling these areas. Catalonia, as you showed in the fist pictures, was a county inside the Reign of Aragon. Aragon and Castilla unified their territories creating Spain. As a curious fact, Castilla and Catalonia share a same latin root, which means something like "land of castles". Catalonian language has many french and some italian influences (because of langued'oc and Aragon's italian territories respectively), but the most similar language is spanish by far. The Pyrenees are a natural frontier that explains it. Barcelona (Barcino) or Catalonia (first named XII) have always been inside hispanic or iberian countries, since they were created. 3:30 Forgot to tell the name: The Utrecht Treaty, that was violated by England with the following consequences. Good job anyway!!
false, phonecians acknowledged that there was a country in the far west of north africa that they called ''mauritania' in 900 B.C. which has much to do with morocco as does visigoth kingdom with spain. and we are berber nation, not arab so all of what you said is pretty much BS
@@psychopassisamasterpiece1997 Well said, I should mention berbers instead of arabs. When I say Morocco didn´t exist is because it didn't exist as a country, I wasn't talking about Mauritania. My point is that there are certain areas is Spain and in Northern Africa that shared the same cultures for a long time. My examples are the carthagynians, romans, or the moors. By the way, you can add information being respective or suggest that I'm wrong at some point, without saying everything is bullshit, which is NOT.
@@topuno4148 pardon if i'm being rude, it's kinda a norm by now to see spaniards distorting our history! but i'm welcome to the exception. as there are many people that claim that the visigoth kingdom is spanish even tho the thing we know a spain wouldn't come till centuries later. and just a side tip, the umaayyad arabs only ruled north africa for 25 years before the berber revolt where they were kicked out of the magreb. berber language stayed predominate since then till the 20 century culture wise. most of the people in andalus were berber, this is why there were always internal conflicts as berber never accepted arab elitism as the dominate demographic
Morocco existed since the 700s as a independent country. And before that as a joint of berber tribes who got colonized by the Romans. Spain didn't exist until after they forced out or forced to christianity the people of the iberian peninsula.I hate how you people try to make Morocco like some random African country who was made by the colonization like others down south. We were always independent with our moutains plains and desert Arabs and Berbers .United by the words of God which are in Arabic that's why we is it the most.
you can deny a fact but you cannot change it. lying about history to manipulate the truth would only take you to an impasse. Morocco has been existing as a COUNTRY since the 8th century when Idriss I founded Fes and announced the establishment of the Idrisside dynasty. therefore Morocco is the 2nd oldest continuing kingdom in the world after the one of Japan, older than all European kingdoms including Spain, so how come Sebta and Melilia were born Spanish whilst Morocco has existed way before Isabella and Ferdinand alliance?? who founded the two cities? aren't the berber locals? let me tell you something..it's just a matter of time before we get back our occupied territories, either peacefully through negotiations or by force if it's necessary.

It's really awesome here :)
Hugs.

Aghilas No need to take it seriously :P
I meant that mentioning the fall of Granada before mentioning the colonization of Africa gives the impression that the Spaniards were working and trying to colonize Africa since 1492. But RealLifeLore probably did it Intentionally as a joke.
Aghilas nah it was probably just part of the scramble of Africa
yo yo the scramble for africa happened later and Spain wasn't a major power by then. The all out scramble by Europeans, which you're talking about, to take over the African continent wouldn't start for another 300 years
Aghilas It wasnt their only african colony, they had Equatorial Guinea until 1968 :D

Britain and France during colonial times: We own 1/3 of Africa..
Spain today: Im the only European country to touch Africa
@Jos P All of those are islands, Spain is the only European country with land in mainland Africa.
Technically even Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Greece, Albania and Montenegro are in Africa. The Adriatic sea, the east coast of Italy and the west coast of Balcans are on the African plate. Venice is geographically african.

Rafael Lastra com Morocco existed since the 9th century...
I dont need to im moroccan . Btw the berbers were their 3000 years BC before the arabs came so . You keep searching. ☺
i am British, and Proud to be a Pirate!
First Spain didn't exist as well this time. Secondly they didn't kick Moors as you wrongly claim, they kicked andausian AUTOCTONES all muslims ~90% autoctones owners of the lands who converted to islam and their descendants were muslims since 800 years !!! ... Catillans and Arragonianas invated Andalusia and kicked out the Autocton muslim Andalusians (& jews) ... not foreigners ... you got the difference ?

And people in Morocco do not need a visa to enter Spain -- they can just walk across the so-called "border" that is impossible to do any sort of border control on.
@@CrazyChen There is a huge difference between going to Melilia and going to Spain from Morocco, because only who have Nador city's passport who can enter to Melilia, not all Moroccans people, and you need a visa to going to Spain from Melilia.
@@untitled9582 No totally wrong if you were born in Nador you don't even need a passport you only need ur national cart but if you were born in another Moroccan parts you only need a passport without a visa
To go Melilla you can have the pase de transfronterismo if you are native from Nador. Also the Necua.
I'm pretty sure Llivia stayed a part of Spain because the treaty stated that every Spanish village in that area would become part of France but Llivia was a town, not a village so Spain kept it.
We ceded them land but they forgot to read the small print...
Why can't everything just be a perfect square?
Because people want more and more..
oh so you want the world to be square? even landmass?
Because borders separate :
- different cultures (europe/africa)
- ethnicity (asia)
- former empire countries (urss, Africa)

RETURNED TO WHAAAT? The state of Morocco didn't exist when Spain took sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla in the 16th/17th centuries (there were a lot of small kingdoms in Northern Africa).
Not true. Of course there have been different dynasties, but it was mostly one country, that was composed of berber people. They are native there, not Spaniards.
morocco have the most second old kingdoom in word after UK
Now the UK is leaving the EU ,it is probably time to give Gibraltar back , but maybe only if the Spaniards give these bit's of Morocco back at the same time
Those lands where spanish before Morocco even existed, so give back to who exactly?
Pollux Pavonis are you crazy, berber have lived there long long time before people from europe
jompelis midi yes, but there was no moroccan state, by that logic 90% of american (and I mean the whole American continent) population shouldn´t been there because natives have lived there long before europeans, africans, asians , etc arrived. And I remind you, those african lands where spanish before America was even discovered by europeans.
And of course, don´t forget West
Sahara, invaded by Morocco itself, and you talk about give them back something?
Pollux Pavonis but why would you give a prosperous city to a failed state like morocco.. the guy is crazy
Aren't you nationalists a funny crowd ?
The video is a map it's petty obvious that these pieces of land have been acquired but Spain and the UK over time moving a population into them doesn't have to finish the debate .
Although Morocco have done this in western Sahara so really all three country's are as bad as each other .
All thought the UK is a bit of serial offender what with Northern Ireland , bits of Cyprus and the Falkland's
I love the way you use maps in this video. Really well put together.
By the way, since last month there is a even shorter international border. It's the Island in Greenland that is split into Denmark and Canada. This border is even shorter

Ceuta was a Portuguese colony, it's worth mentioning.
dotcom137 actually Ceuta is a spanish city
Kisio 773 but has the portuguese symbol on his flag, because it was a portuguese settlement before being spanish
When Portugal independized from Spain, the Ceuta citizens VOTED to be part of Spain
ceuta it's a Moroccan land and it's population are the berber or Imazighn as like all northern africa and like cebeltar is a spanish land.

Ceuta and mlilia are still colonised by Spanish

Ceuta and Melilla are not occupied cities but Spanish cities , before being Spanish it was Portuguese conquered by Avis dinasty in 1415. Now, give back Gibraltar which is an actual occupied city.
The way he pronounces Ceuta is physically painful to hear.
because the original pronunciation is sebta in arabic سبتة

That's right. But the video is quite a few mistakes. They said that Barcelona was French with Napoleon invasion, i.e. 4 years like almost the whole peninsula. Ceuta is much bigger than Melilla and they said the opposite . They say that these are the only parts of EU in Africa, and well Canary Islands??????

0:06 The Native Africans after hearing about the partitions of Africa in the Berlin Conference
