Unlike legitimate charitable organizations, a GoFundMe doesn't have to account for how the funds are allocated. This sounds like just another Trump grift.
Where did the gofundme money for the Butler PA victims go? That fund was set up by the same Trump finance director, Meredith O’Rourke. I’ve never seen any info indicating the distribution to the families of the man killed or the two men who were wounded.
Actually that's not exactly true. I recently donated to a GoFundMe that was raising money for a local family. Months later I received a refund of my donation because the funds were not being used as intended.

Why would we need a middleman when donating when you can donate directly to the charities doing the work? Only give to a reputable agency.

They've been a vile, dishonest organization for a long time. I went to Christian school K-12, and we used to put together shoe-boxes of Christmas toys and goodies for "3rd world kids in need to have gifts" as part of Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child annual event. That turned out to be a very dark, dishonest, and corrupt "charity", which was funneling massive amounts of the donations to GOP politicians, while opening our shoeboxes of gifts and adding Christian Nationalist PROPAGANDA, then, rather than sending them to 3rd world countries, they researched Muslim majority areas in the U.S. and other places, and sent the shoeboxes to those families, unasked for. With pamphlets stating to the kids they would go to hell if they didn't convert from their family's religion, amongst other issues.
Money laundering, re-directing, and embezzlement, while decieving those of us participating to use our money and efforts and kindness to pursue discriminatory and manipulative agendas.
There's whole documentaries on it, now. I left the religion around my early adulthood, but it still shook me to learn all those years of trying to help poor kids with cool toys and socks and underwear and toothbrushes and such, were taken advantage of by this organization. Samaritan's Purse. I'll bet they know all about this with Trump and are helping him lie.
We don't know that Samaritan's Purse was "in on" this scam, but I'd bet good money Franklin Graham was. How disappointing his deceased father's spirit must be in how his son turned into a Trump co-grifter and idol worshipper.
