- This is our first video, and the first leg of our journey north towards the Alaskan border, where the plan was to make a border crossing in April 2021.
We left Vancouver BC in December of 2020 and set sail out into the Pacific Northwest winter weather. Visiting a number of anchorages that are usually packed with other boats in the summer, we had every single anchorage to ourselves and were able to explore the true magic of the wild BC coast.
Thanks so much for checking out this video! Hit subscribe if you want to follow along on our sailing adventures as we learn more about our boat, off-grid sustainability, winter sailing, and the ruggedly beautiful British Columbia Coastline (and beyond...post pandemic)

Stunning
I teared up a bit 😍
:)
Beautiful documentary and beautiful puppy!
Thank you very much!
I enjoyed the video and the narrative. Very well done. Thank you for sharing...Lodi, California.
Cheers from Comox, subscribed along for the ride
Thanks so much!! Many more vids to come!
Thank you for sharing your travels
Documenting our travels has been lots of fun so far. Many videos to come!
I love the video and the narration
Thank you so much :)
My friend Danny, sails SE Alaskan waters. In the winter, he simply stores his refrigerated items outside. It makes perfect sense… Like you, he shuts down the fridge, and uses decorative LED lighting, and other power saving measures. The wind generator makes good sense up there…
Love the video of your adventures. I’m a subscriber now! Looking forward to binge watching your other videos. Happy New Year!
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!! Glad you found us and are enjoying a good binge watch sesh :) The idea of using the cool temps further north to keep refrigerated items cold outside IS a fabulous idea and it always feels so satisfying to save on power however we can too.
We love having little LED string lights hung up in the cabin year round and can go about half a year without switching out the batteries in the little control pack. Finding new ways to be more efficient is one of the funnest aspects of boat life.
Anywhooo, thanks again for the support!
Absolutely fantastic sailing ⛵ Bravo
Thank you!!
Hi !! Beautiful video.....I am a niece of Paul and Caroline ( Giebateau) sailed with them in 2017 in Alaska, it was....magic! Wish you lots of beautiful sailing experiences on our beautiful planet....greetings from the Netherlands, Nicolette
Hi Nicolette! That's very cool, we love Paul and Caroline, sailing with them is always a fun time! Really nice to "meet" you :) And thanks so much for watching!
Loved it!
Thanks for watching! Hope all is well with you and the fam!
Beautiful!
Haha one of the quick replies is "You Are"...That is what I wanted to reply, but really though, thanks Georgie!
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing and for exposing us all to the beauty of Canada's west coast. Odd question... what would you consider the perfect dingy for the west coast of Canada?
Hmmmm, that's a tough one...Our RIB was honestly quite perfect for our cruising adventures up there. The hard bottom is tough and stands up to the sharp shores, and with the chaps to protect the pontoons, it was a tough unit all over. We ended up getting wheels which made a huge difference as the dinghy was very heavy and awkward without them, and with the big tide swings (and the length of our hikes) it was sometimes a very long drag back to the water.
The RIB is also great for hauling our dive gear and staging our dives. Another pro is that it has a bilge so it can be very full of water and still floats well. Some days the entire bilge and bottom of the dinghy would be full of rain water. The main down fall for us with the RIB however, is that we have no other place except the foredeck to stow it and it takes up a lot of room. Now that we are further down the coast and the RIB is not quite as necessary, we are thinking of swapping it out for a storable dinghy in order to gain that extra room on deck. Hope that answered your question!
Awesome video, well done!!
Thanks a lot! Miss you guys!
Did you try some chowder from those mussels? They have excellent flavour !
We didn’t! We don’t usually eat mussels as they are known to hold the highest levels of toxins in their bodies and it’s hard to know just the extent of contamination no matter where they grow. I’m sure there are some areas on the BC coast where they’re just fine to eat, but seeing water quality, even in some very remote areas, definitely had us questioning whether we wanted to consume them.
I just found you guys. Awesome video.
Thank you so much Dave!
This is amazing... ❤️
Thanks Colin :)
How blessed are we, to live, on this beautiful planet! Thanks, you two, for sharing this beauty
Ahem, I mean, THREE, Hahah
I couldn't agree more! Happy to share! Thanks so much for watching!
Haha Muoi thanks you for not forgetting her, after all, she is the princess on the boat.
Fantastic first video! Lots of great shots and interesting info :)!
Thanks so much for watching Amanda!
Love your videos. What is the Kayak (bike) type/brand? thank you so much.
Thanks so much! We have had an Innova Swing inflatable for about 5 years now. It is very well loved by this point but still keeps us afloat!
Makes me want to follow in your wake! Nicely done guys, beautiful job!
Thanks Bruce! Hopefully we'll get to sail together one of these days soon!
Hey guys I am from Courtenay Vancouver Island.
I am planning to buy a boat in the next year or two and sail the coast as well.
I can't wait to see all the places you guys have been to.
I am loving watching your journey!!!
Keep it up guys.
Hey Clayton! Super stoked to hear you'll be buying a boat :) Thanks for watching and keep us posted on your adventures as well!
Love your channel. Amazing scenery and wonderful and knowledgeable narration. You two seem very cool. And your dog is great. Subscribed. Your channel is going to be popular. Cheers 🍻
Thanks so much for watching, subscribing, and for the thoughtful feedback :) Cheers right back atchya!
You two are so very fortunate to have each other :)
Amazing!! Great video Brooke!! I have been waiting for this! The next Sailing La Vagabonde! ;) Looking forward to the next video!
Thanks lovely lady! Miss you so much! Next video is coming out sooooon! xoxo
Wow Brooke what an amazing adventure. Very inspiring!
Allison! Hello! Thanks so much for watching :) Hope all is well with you!
Hi Guys. I have been watching sailing channels on TH-cam for 5 years or so and to be quit honest I'm growing a bit uninterested at watching until I found your channel. (which by the way I found you by watching Sailing Taku). You have all the good ingredients for an interesting and beautiful video to watch. I think for me a video has to have interest by way of information about the surroundings that your in and you do that. Thx. I will for sure watch all off the past and recent videos. Subscribing was easy. Keep up all of the good work. Trevor from Campbell River BC
Thank you so much Trevor! Such wonderful feedback :) Many more videos coming, just need a bit of internet haha. So glad you enjoyed watching and happy to have you along for the journey! Cheers!
Love the video. We are bringing our sail boat down from from Port Edward to Pender Harbour at end of May. Great to get some beta and see the spectacular coast line we will encounter along the way.
Hey, thanks! We're actually up in Prince Rupert right now. Will you be taking the inside your the way down?
What a beautiful beginning to your journey. After going down the sailing channel rabbit hole due to Covid and following sailing families circumnavigating the world and bikini's and Labradoodles in the Caribbean it so refreshing to see our backyard, the Pacific coast. The abundance of wildlife in the ocean, air and land is so nice compared to the tropics. Cheers!
Thanks so much for watching! We definitely love the Pacific Northwest too! Such beautiful cruising grounds and sooo much to explore!
Nicely done!!! Looking forward to following along. The BC coast/Alaska is definitely on my sailing destination short list. Cheers!!
Hey thanks! And thanks for watching Brian! It is so beautiful up here and it just gets better the further north you go. Definitely a good call to have it on the short list! Let me know when you get out here!
Great video! Looking forward to more! Really like the knowledge about the biology of the area that you share!
Thanks so much, that's really great feedback! I love nerding out on the nature side of things haha. Hope you guys have a wonderful trip up in Alaska! I'm really looking forward to watching your videos!
Amazing photography and commentary on our beautiful coast. Stunning!!
Thanks Anna! Still looking forward to taking you guys sailing one day!
Sooo inspiring and beautiful to see the coast side the way you are, thanks for sharing Brooke! 💕👏 Miss u
Thank you so much!! Miss you too lovely!
Thank you for sharing your adventure. Looking forward to more of your journey ahead. Just a little feedback, I could not catch what you were saying quite a few times.
Thank you for watching! Could you not hear the narration or when we are on the video talking? Thanks so much for feedback, it really helps!
@@WildsandWaterSailing Once again, thank you for sharing the beauty and charm of Alaska. And I must also add that you have such a sweet gentle voice. I viewed your video a second time just to be sure of what I had perceived but even so could not put a finger to the difficulty I had. A second opinion from an audio expert would certainly help. But perhaps trying hard picking out unfamiliar names of places in your narration added to the 'muffleness'. I really don't know. If there is a suggestion that I could contribute, I think it would help greatly if a list of places you mentioned are put in printed text in your video description. I am sorry I cannot help in the audio. Thank you once again.
Thank you again for the feedback. We've started adding in titles to the places we are located, but have also gotten a new microphone for voice recording so hopefully that will greatly improve the sound quality. Hope you'll keep watching further episodes and let us know if it gets better :)
Just catching up on your videos now and loved this. Great photography and nostalgia for places we normally sail in. Blekinsop is a bay we've always considered but never stopped in. Since you stayed there close to a week, sounds like we'll have to consider it!
Hey! Thanks so much! Ye, Blenkinsop is a lovely spot! The views are absolutely outstanding (other than a bit of active logging-nothing against logging but just a bit of an eyesore). The bay is great for kayaking and there's decent fishing off the point. The forest looks thick but is actually pretty easy to wander too :) Hope you guys are doing well!
Looks like a great trip, so beautiful enjoy the trip!! Safe travels.😊
Thanks Cindy! Hope all is well :) Miss ya!
Absolutely incredible, thanks so much for bringing us along on your amazing trip! You never cease to amaze! Photography videography, and commentary as awesome 👏 Can’t wait for the next one!
Thanks so much for following along on this journey of ours! Next one is coming out soon!
thank you for this beautiful video, the views are stunning. The water is so very clear and a beautiful colour! one comment - the music is too loud in relation to your voice - which is muffled - so I need to keep turning my volume down.
Thanks so much for watching, and for that feedback. It's super helpful as this is all a learning experience (haha). We've just upgraded from the computer mic to a super duper fancy $10 mic, so hopefully it helps with the sound quality. Please let us know! New video goes up tomorrow. Thanks so much for watching :)
P.S. A reaaal fancy mic is high on the priority list...we just need to stay in one place long enough to order one...
First video viewed of WAWS, and as usual with so many creators the spoken audio is inaudible and the music blows the ear drums. Please try and balance the volume levels. Great visual appeal though..
Enjoyed your videos. Interested to know a little about your boat. Make?
Also sailing those winter months, what kind of heat do you use?. Your marine information was done well. Are you a marine biologist? Sailing background? Thanks!!
Thanks so much for watching! Akhlut is a Reinke S11; she is an aluminum boat with twin keels. During the winter months we rely on our Refleks diesel stove for heat, and other than a few minor backdrafting issues in SUPER gusty weather, it does us very well. It keeps the space quite toasty even on the coldest of days. I (Brooke) have a background in Environmental Science, but not marine biology specifically. I would say Conlee and I are both just nerds when it comes to learning as much as we can about the marine world we now call home. We have some wonderful marine biology friends who help us with ID on some of the species we don't yet know, which has been a big help for making the videos. We began sailing nearly 3 years ago now. We started out in Ensenada Mexico just after Conlee bought the boat and sailed Mexico for the winter, getting to know the boat, and each other. In April of 2019 we left for an ocean crossing to Hawaii. We've been back in Canadian waters for almost 2 years now and plan to leave again for Mexico this fall.
Hi Guys,
Great boat, I am super interested in the technical things on board.
How was buying the boat in Mexico, did you end up paying crazy taxes?
Hey! Thanks for watching! I can't give ya a full answer right now as we are in a very remote town and I only have WiFi for a few minutes. Would you mind shooting us an email at wildsandwater@gmail.com and we'll get back to you as soon as we get into some better service. Cheers!
The scenery is beautiful, and your commentary is informative and interesting. Unfortunately we find the music very distracting, and somewhat annoying, I would much rather listen to the waves and silence.
Thanks so much for the feedback. We definitely need a better mic for the ambient sounds and it's high on the list of things to get :) I have turned the music down a bit in later videos and will continue working on bringing the ambient sounds to our viewers. Thanks for watching!
Good job! I’d rather see what you’re seeing and doing than looking at a talking head telling about what they’re doing.
Thanks so much for that feedback, love it! Thanks for subscribing!
Awesome, well done! Be safe and enjoy the journey! If you make it to Newfoundland, be sure to let us know 🎣🙌
Thanks! Will do for sure!
