  • As we sail north from BC's Gulf Islands toward Desolation Sound, we stop at several beautiful harbours along the way. But we'll always remember one particular harbour for something very sad that happened while we we were there. In this episode, we're joined by friends Cheryl and Garth for the passage up to Campbell River.

My home waters, thanks for the memories.
I’m currently on a circumnavigation, sailing in Thailand.
    We left in 2015.
You’re so lucky to be in those magical waters.
    Enjoy

We approached Nanaimo from the north (arriving from Tribune Bay) one night and I noticed that there was a low slack at Dodd's at 10 pm. The kids were consulted :-) should we go for it? With everyone up the the adventure, we bypassed Nanaimo. There's a light at the north entrance, but you don't see it until the last minute, so we were motoring into complete darkness - no other boats in the area. Went through and anchored opposite Pirates Coves. Unforgettable.

Do you know what is in a real Nanaimo bar?
    Hells Angels and strippers. Lol

It’s actually “smoke and peelers, cocaine dealers, redneck loggers, non stop talkers, hookers with daughters “ according to folk singer Bob Bossin

Great video, I’ve sailed these same waters for almost 40 years and it never gets old. I liked your depiction of stern tying at Wallace Island, I have anchored with a stern tie in that exact spot before. Last time I was there I was single handing which makes stern tying even more challenging. Fortunately I picked a moment that was calm with almost zero cross breeze, otherwise I’m not sure I would have attempted it solo.

Thank you. We love the music. He’s so iconic with sailing/boating that we felt we needed to make that a part of the video.

Been to Wallace Island many times and never made the trek to the cabin for some reason??? We always enjoy your adventure off the boat, and are def going to have to do that more this coming season.

Thanks, so sorry it didn’t work out to meet up in Nanaimo. Our plans on the way back got derailed by weather and repairs. Hopefully next time we’re in town!

Nice tribute but how that video has not been delisted I am puzzled. Yikes. Amazing . A pirate looks at copyright infringement

I’m impressed with the quantity of the video work and editing. Nicely done! Next time going north consider going across to Malaspina Strait. Much more of a fun sail, more places to stop and it’s the same distance. Have a look at my video from last summer about transiting Dodd Narrows. Taking advantage of the current allows more flexible timing with no one around.

Is it sheltered from the wind? Where the children play in the shore each day?

Great video, welcome to BC Sailing , you had great weather for Tribune Bay, and i like your boat, we live in Nanaimo and we love to explore Desolation Sound, here is a local tip for you. Rather than point straight to Hornby island and motor sail or beat into the wind (NW) set your course to a comfortable close reach, as you get some distance from Vancouver island , the wind will moderate and begin to clock to the West .You can choose malaspina straight if the wind is fairly strong , or sail comfortably o n a beam reach on the north side of Georgia straight. No need to beat up the crew or the boat and you will get there around the same time.
