Aleksey Daziel while you're not wrong I think that minimizes the amount of hard work he put into getting to this level, other people can only teach you so much
ArtOfDying you haven't lived yet son. I don't see what all the hype is all about this guy. There are innumerable drummers that would make him look like the juvenile he is. I guess if you're young he's someone to lok up to. And the music sucks too. If you're into metal, I guess it's OK.
James Bryce not to sound rude, but I think you're wrong, there are a lot of nuances in his playing that you're not picking up on if that's you're true opinion. of course I'm biased, but if you study his playing, the musicality, pocket, use of rudiments and how well his phrasing fits the music, you would see that he is pretty much in a league of his own. I think he balances technical gospel playing and metal more than a lot of other drummers. if you disagree, that's totally cool, just trying to have a discussion about it instead of bashing for no reason.
I truly don't understand how Luke gets DW 9000s to feel so light and responsive yet powerful. My first set of double pedals ever, Pearl P122s are still faster than my 9000s to this day no matter what level of adjustment.
Calibur43 I'm 99% sure it has to do with technique. Drumeo has a video where they do heel toe in every type of shoe including timberland and snowboarding boots, so I would imagine if you can use the same technique with any shoe, you can use the same technique with any pedal.
Yeah he also has insanely proficient foot control haha. I actually use both heel up and heel toe for different applications interchangeably. The 9000s just feel so much heavier and I have them adjusted to pretty much to match my P122s, obviously two different pedal systems and material but still they "should" feel matched at this point. I've been drumming with both for years and years. One of these days I'll find the perfect beater distance, spring tension, and pedal height settings for the 9000s lol.
+Calibur43 I use the 5000's and honestly I feel like it depends on the day. Some days they feel super light and I'm able to play soo fast then others days they're like bricks and I can't do anything. For the most part i have them feeling pretty light though!
I totally agree, this performance would be hard for a majority of drummers to pull off! It really made me appreciate how good Luke truly is. It's one thing to write these crazy parts since anyone can sound amazing with the help of studio magic ( a lot of bands are guilty of this) but to see him pull it off live- not only to be spot on, but to make it look easy, is another animal completely in my opinion! Michael caught a majority of what makes his playing stand out so much, and if you read music, you can pick up the transcription for Omni and Fragments here and follow along to see how insane these parts really are! jasonrichardson.bigcartel.com/product/omni-and-fragments-drum-notation
I think Luke Holland is a pretty good, but I've realised that his traditional blast beats/euro blasts are quite poor. I've noticed this in the Omni playthrough on Meinl's YT channel too. For example, at 1:40, the euro blasts which are basically just alternating single strokes slowly go off-time just like in the playthrough video. It seems like he can't keep the timing or one of his hands can't keep up with the other. This can be seen at other parts when he does traditional blasts too.
I see what you mean, those are definitely some of the more difficult parts to nail considering how he is actually comping Jason's lead during that part.Either way it's not distracting and serves the music well. Notice how he's sticking out each of those hits and the velocity/dynamic isn't changing like a lot of metal drummers do when blasting.
Okay, Bro. I see what you mean. The mics do sound great as-is. I'll look into that option as well. For real, I appreciate all the advice you've shared. You're awesome, Bro! Definitely took a load off my brain. Lol.
I don't know about you guys, but that is probably one of the most dead crowds I've seen in a long time. I'm surprised there weren't any pits forming or anything, the music definitely calls for it.
Jason's music is a spectacle. His and Luke's playing commands attention and doesn't really allow for pits or moshing unless you're not interested in the technical prowess of what's being performed and would rather knock into other humans and get sweaty. Not all shows prompt pits or moshing.
Matt Watson I was interested in the playing and there was a pit in Chapel Hill like every song. the worst was actually the country twang during hos down. don't mind the pit but it was a small place real small. met both of them both cool as fuck. talked guitar shit with Jason for a while. basically talked me into buying a majesty.
Shows the how influential a front man can be, there's no communication with the crowd to hype them up and move with them. Also the technicality of the music make it difficult to move to, you just have to sit there with your jaw on the floor
Lol thanks man, Jason accidentally bumped the tripod before the set even started and I wasn't able to check focus again since it would have been really distracting to jump up on stage, but it is what it is. I really wish I could have fixed it, but you can make out exactly what luke is playing, so I don't think it's the end of the world. Unless it is the end of the world... I may have missed the memo lol
indeed it was, idk what you are hearing to. compare it to the album version. im not saying luke is a sloppy drummer by any means. i love him and he is one of my favourite drummers, i was waiting for that part very anxious and i couldnt help noticing it
you can't imagine how difficult the stuff is luke plays, especially his footwork ! , maybe it sounds easy for a non drummer, but trust me there are two real stars:)
sawtoothscream 1 they actually did use backing vocal tracks. You can here it leading into the breakdown section at 6:35. It just sounds quiet underneath the camera audio, as opposed to through the sound board. Its the same in fragments.
Mitchell Roux There is an interesting discussion about that lower in the comments. I believe it's because people are watching in Awe as opposed to trying to move to the music. this is a very much enthusiast duo, with both musicians displaying so much virtuosity that looking away for a second would mean missing something technically impressive!
and can we all just take a moment and appreciate how good Luke has become? Mad respect for him
Yes!
Ties Jehoul to be fair he's all the greatest players in the world guide and teach him throughout his whole career.
Aleksey Daziel while you're not wrong I think that minimizes the amount of hard work he put into getting to this level, other people can only teach you so much
AJ Kay agreed dude
He started doing harder stuff. A lot of stick tricks while drumming.
0:00 Omni
4:24 Retrograde

You beat me to it, spot on!
Is that really the sticking? If so then fuck I need to practice my paradiddlediddles.

Calibur43 trial and error my friend! good luck dialing those in! thanks for watching!

Calibur43 he puts a skateboard griptape on his pedalboards if that could help his responsiveness
17:45 luke😂
thank you thank you thank you
13:42 Luke teachs that in 180 Drums channel. I was just able figure out now lol
Nice, I hope having an alternate angle helped!
good quality ...just awesome ...PROG...rules
captions for this video *Insanely good drumming*
can it be put into words any better?
I didn’t realize I left the closed captions on until I saw “insanely good drumming”. Couldn’t have put it better myself ❤
They should make a full band. Would be amazing
is that the gy fro the office?
im no drummer, but on a scale from 1-10 how difficult is lukes drumming on that album?
I totally agree, this performance would be hard for a majority of drummers to pull off! It really made me appreciate how good Luke truly is. As a drummer, I can for sure say that it is a 10.
10 for sure my friend
Luke straight up kills it! Did you film Clay playing with Polyphia?
Eetu Mellin Drums i wish man! I had to leave early! will definitely try to get in touch to record him in the future!
AJ Kay Damn that sucks...
Eetu Mellin Drums it was a real bummer, but there's always next time!
AJ Kay For sure! I'll be on the lookout for the videos.
Quality rips, drumming rips, Jason rips.
R.I.P my ovaries (which I don't have).
not anymore you don't
Right in the fallopian tubes

DemiUrge those are not alternating singles. Both hands are hitting in unison each beat. Way fucking harder than singles loo
Luke has gotten dang good!
my jaw hit the floor seeing it live
sick!
What a couple of hard ass working smooth ass flowing skillful talented ass mofos right here. Jesus. What a display.
120 BPM: The Show
That fill at 14:05 damn😳
Brandon Stollar one of my favorite parts of the whole set!
Should be six stroke roll or paradidledidle or both. Sick.
Okay, Bro. I see what you mean. The mics do sound great as-is. I'll look into that option as well. For real, I appreciate all the advice you've shared. You're awesome, Bro! Definitely took a load off my brain. Lol.
Anton Daceyah any time bro. Hit my up on IG. @ajk.productions. Always down to talk gear and stuff!
Is it just the two of them?
Gundamwing 7 yes. I should know cause I wasn’t there.
I don't know about you guys, but that is probably one of the most dead crowds I've seen in a long time. I'm surprised there weren't any pits forming or anything, the music definitely calls for it.

It's too technical for moshing. Definitely something I would rather and give them my attention than run around.

Mister Plague thx u opened my eyes
FUCKN SUBBED!! THANKS AJ!!
23:23 never heard luke playing sloppy but this is the first time :(
If that counts as sloppy I want to play sloppy every second of my life haha that double kick part is insane!
indeed it was, idk what you are hearing to. compare it to the album version. im not saying luke is a sloppy drummer by any means. i love him and he is one of my favourite drummers, i was waiting for that part very anxious and i couldnt help noticing it
yea the ending part was a bit sloppy but it's quite a statement to play this track at the end of that set haha
yeah its really fucking hard
Judging by his face during that song, I think he was a little exhausted lol, this kind of music is crazy to play!
Jason is awesome. Luke too but Jason is the true star !!!
you can't imagine how difficult the stuff is luke plays, especially his footwork ! , maybe it sounds easy for a non drummer, but trust me there are two real stars:)
I thinks those teens out there.... Dont know they have 2 music monsters in front of them....... Mind opening notes....
glad they didn't do a corny back track of Spencer for retrograde. That song is so good as an instrumental imo.
sawtoothscream 1 they actually did use backing vocal tracks. You can here it leading into the breakdown section at 6:35. It just sounds quiet underneath the camera audio, as opposed to through the sound board. Its the same in fragments.
Spencer is what makes Retrograde so good.
Dude you're such a great drummer... why is the crowd so dormant for the entirety of this video??? It seriously looks like nobody wants to be there
Mitchell Roux There is an interesting discussion about that lower in the comments. That’s exactly what I was thinking, just watching this, I am mesmerized 🔥
