Thank you for making me feel like I belong in the outdoors community. I feel sometimes like I get a side eye for the gear I bring along. It doesn’t have to be expensive to work, and I have to make money stretch as far as possible. I prefer making it work to not getting out there at all.
The most expensive gear in the world is useless sitting in a closet, which is what happens so many times. It's like so many hobbies people buy all this 'stuff' and it sits there. You are getting so enjoyment by getting out and doing! That's the real deal. Bragging about equipment is not. Also at some point if YOU deside to buy a different piece you will enjoy it more. Anything to keep you on the trail IS the best thing.!
My only litmus test for gear is whether it works for me and I actually use it. This goes for pack food too…why pay a lot of money for freeze dried when you can pack your own dried food for a week or more…oatmeal, potato flakes, rice, etc…cook as you go. A caveat, I do like my expensive pack.
I went on my first backpacking trip there last December. Four guys from work knew of my great longing to give it a try. They helped this old gal across a bunch of water crossings and over some pretty rugged terrain. We hiked in at the end of a rainstorm. The nights dipped into the twenties. I pitched my tiny tent on an incline the first night and spent most it inchworming my way back. We were totally cut off from the world. Sound terrible? Nope. It was one of the best times of my life. Oh. And I’m 56 yo.
My husband and I haven’t done any backpacking since our oldest was born, 5.5 years ago. This past weekend we took our 3 kids (5.5, 3, 1.5) on their first camping trip. We kept it simple, went to a park not far from home, did car camping, only stayed one night. And they LOVED it! It reminded me that we don’t have to go deep into the back country to still share this with our kids ❤️ this video is another great reminder!
Kids love sleeping in tents! It’s important to keep things simple - don’t expect a 2-year-old to walk a trail! My husband was fantastic at making games for our son. “Hunt for the blue blazes!” There’s another one!
My parents took me camping when I was still in diapers. Ive got pictures of it. Now my dad was drafted for Vietnam 68-69. Not sure if he enjoyed it as much as my older brother and I did 😉
So well expressed! We did the same with our five kiddos back in the day when they were 8yrs and under. Just do what you can do, and get them out in it!
My first backpacking tent was an Ozark Trail tent from Walmart. Lightweight, seam sealed, great quality. $70. I’m still using it. Hundreds of miles, multiple nights, rainy weather, temps in the 30s, and it’s still going strong!!
Lol I bought a 400 dollar tent from REI. The first time I used it on a campsite, the tent fell apart. I went to Walmart and bought a 30 dollar tent. That was 4 years ago. I recently had to use duct tape to keep one of the legs from collapsing. Other than that. It takes me 10 minutes to put up and it drops easy to be put away. I’m pretty close to retiring it cause it’s heavy and not a back packing kind of tent. I will never buy a tent from REI although they did give me my money back for the defective tent.
My favorite parts are the "kind to animals" moments. I also tell people that are new to the hobby, don't spend a ton of money until you are certain you want/need something better or lighter or that suits a need. Thanks for showing you don't need to spend a couple of thousand dollars just to get out in the woods.
As an old geezer who has spent a fair amount of time in the woods, I am able to see your video in 3D. Yes it's only 2 dimensional but I truly appreciate the natural beauty you capture. Cabalistic slugs, spiders scampering across your toes, and your feet hiking onward underwater. I'm happy you showed people that you can enjoy a multi day hike on a budget. The world would be a better place if more people slid their fannies down a muddy slope and listened to Barred owls as they fell asleep. That's why we do it, right? Thank you for sharing.
With the muddy falls, let's rename it the Slipsey Wilderness. I'm glad you did this challenge. It will be useful for passing along to help people become more comfortable & confident that they can do it in their budget.
Look for sales and look for cheap gear ideas from other budget lists. I know it was all the way back in 2014, but even without any experience or advice from TH-cam hikers, I put together a comfortable but heavy set up for under $300 that would be fine for low daily mileage hikes e.g. hiking in 8 miles and doing day hikes from a central camp or taking a week to hike a section of the PCT.
I've been hiking alot for the last 18 months and bought 85 to 90% of my gear from Walmart. I have to say so far everything has held up and has made getting into the hobby fit into my budget. Thx for the video Dixie!!!!
Ozark trail is underrated. I’ve been through many a storm in one, dry and comfortable with its full cover fly and built in tub. No, it’s not light or high tech but it’s reliable.
I have two day packs from them I got for $8 like 10 years ago. They've survived hundreds of miles on the trail and countless pitches of climbing. If you're just starting out or want to go cheap they've got solid stuff. You might get a couple questions on hikes from pretentious people sometimes, but who cares. Only major issue is I'd rather support local than go to Walmart, but nothing wrong with their gear.
My first trekking poles, sleeping bag, and cookset for my first backpacking trip were all purchased at Wal-Mart. I was totally stoked to upgrade to better quality and lighter gear as I got more experienced, but I don't remember ever having real issues with the Wal-Mart gear. A little heavy and bulky, but hey'.
This is an excellent video, as it’s not as much educational as it is genuine, a more “ Everyman” type hiking experience . It definitely was more real world, and enjoyable to watch. You seemed to be happy doing it, and as you hiked, your joy for what you do shined through. Thank you!!!
I think it's better seeing me up mentally me for my first backpacking trip next weekend. Like, there will be bugs and snakes and possibly cold water and downed trees that are hard to climb over with a pack on, okay, check. But still beautiful. I feel very unprepared in other ways. The used back i bought is tiny. Still need some of the other gear. Only 2 nights so hey.

I know these kind of videos aren’t the cheapest to make but I think a series of these themed gear reviews would be awesome! Like an Amazon only challenge, Academy challenge, REI challenge, etc. Maybe this will show which retailers have better quality and selection of gear readily available. Like, is Walmart gear really cheaper if you have to drive to every Walmart in the region to find the gear you need?
My first backpacking tent came from Wal-Mart in the 90's. It worked well, kept the rain out and went a lot of places. Thanks for reminding us that not all your gear has to be expensive or from a certain company. Getting on trail is what's important.

I only went above my budged with my beacon, and that's kinda obligated, slowly building up my gear, all I ask for Christmas is camping and hiking gear, which is a great way to get stuff without having to buy them perse. The places you've seen are so magical, and we see the beauty of the world through your videos. Thank you.
Hi Dixie! I bought a tent like that & left it up in the back yard the entire spring & summer of 2020. It turned kind of gray, but it never leaked even though it poured rain several times. It's been a good value for this car camper/wannabe backpacker- at least so far;)

Great video dixie. When I started I bought all my gear from Walmart (tent, 3 season sleeping bag, cook pot, dry bags, and a few other small things) and rest from Amazon. Most of it is great gear that I still have and use. Some things I've upgraded over time. Paid just under $300 and base weight was 16 pounds. I was able to take my time and gather lightweight and inexpensive gear until I had everything. In a pinch I still use Walmart.
The shots do not look dumb: great shots of the leaves, trees, stars, fire, creatures...great work! The leaf floating, the choice of music...all great! That old Disney western music at the end like "Charlie the Cougar" or "The Nashville Coyote"...awesome!

When I started backpacking with my family, Walmart gear was a great starter. Once we realized that the kids enjoyed backpacking we have slowly upgraded as the budget allowed.
I went camping on a beach and there were high winds, everyone that had a "name brand" tent did fine, everyone out there with Ozark Trail tents were dealing with broken poles and collapsed tents all night. I think Walmart gear is fine for quick car camping trips with good weather, but once any sort of elements are introduced the more expensive stuff proves its value quickly.
I have a Ozark tent that's a little bit over 6 years old and camp often. I have never had any problems and have been in some rough storms in it. But I do but a tarp over it although I sprayed it with water guard.
I agree. We had a backyard camp out with several different kinds of tents. We had a heavy windstorm that night and only the ozark tent went down. The folks camping in that one had to go into other people's tents.
I don't comment much, but I had to here. I've been watching your videos for a while and this one is the best yet. Great production, funny & folksy yet informative and very judicious use of effects. I know that it would take backpackers like me years to be able to take footage like this, and I for one am very glad you do it for us. Funny, when you were setting up your tent the second night I thought, "What will she do if the tentpole breaks?" I had that happen with my REI Quarterdome when I was section hiking the PCT. Luckily I was only a few miles from my resupply. thanks for showing that. This is a great video. Making me ache to get back out . thanks for taking us along!

I hope when the weight lets you do it, that you will take your trail cam (always) with you... even if you filmed nothing the first time, you sure will catch some amazing wildlife in the future and who knows, maybe even a cryptid from the region you are in... Alabama is so beautiful. I went to Monte Sano State Park 4 years ago amd hiked all through it. I was amazed at all of the natural rockwork on the mountain. It was stunning! I went at the end of March so all of the trees had fresh leaves which just made everything that much prettier.
Great video and challenge. I am from Trinidad in the Caribbean and I have gotten very good "affordable" gear from Walmart. All of still going the distance. Your comment about getting out there rings so true. I love riding my gravel or MTB and seeing leaves getting blown by the wind. It makes them look alive and moving on their own.

Thank you for this....very new to hiking. Just day hiking right now. I have some physical challenges to sort out, and get a feel for just being back out in nature again. Haven't been into it since I was a kid. (50s now). I've been slowly getting gear. having shoulder and back issues, I saved up to get a decent osprey bag (20L tempest) I wanted to keep the bag size manageable, so I wouldn't be tempted to load it with everything and the kitchen sink lol. Next will be my shoes and poles. Again will save up, and get something decent. I don't feel I need the "Best", I'm not that sort of person. I'm just thinking in terms of health / safety for myself that it would be better. Other than those few things, everything else will be budget stuff.
At the end when "I vow to thee my country" came in, that achingly beautiful melody seemed like a fitting tribute to all of nature. Nice pick Dixie gal. God bless you and keep you safe.

Thanks for making this video. I spent years waiting to backpack due to not having the money. Like you recommended I eventually got gear over time and knew people who had things I could borrow until I was able to get it myself. I will agree that nature is experienced best being there yourself with health issues keeping me off trail for a bit I’m enjoying the videos and making my future hiking trips to help me get by. Back in March, I took leave from work and went on a month long road trip to hike and camp at several National Parks and forests. I was sitting at my office desk today feeling kind of down and missing the outdoors. Even though you lament the fact that your vids are "just" a 2D representation of nature, this one took me back to my own beautiful experiences. Thank you for that.
When I started equipping myself for the JMT, I needed a new tent, sleeping bag, boots, and stove. My goal was to purchase one big thing each month, and to fund it, I completely stopped eating out, buying goodies to eat, fast food; no purchases of cosmetics or new clothing that was not needed for my trek, etc. Also, since I am not a coffee drinker, it was very easy for me to not spend money on fancy drinks. It was amazing how quickly I was able to save up for my gear. That year, I bought a used pack (5 lbs) at an REI parking lot sale for $35, which I used for 2 seasons. I have since upgraded to a ULA Catalyst. Thank you for doing this challenge. Very informative.
The way I understand it, they tend to compete with local store products, so if you look for Walmarts closer to sporting goods stores you may have better luck.
I agree with the idea of gathering the best possible gear over time rather than buying whatever inexpensive things you can find that are immediately available. I have purchased so many replacement items in effort to get the weight down. Price and weight are a delicate balance.
I’ve spent more days/nights in the Sipsey than I could count and I started 30 years ago with a lot of budget gear. Now, I have a load of expensive, ultralight gear but the experience hasn’t changed. Love that place. 🦑
Never ceases to amaze me the number of colloquialisms you create. I just wonder how you know toad doodoo is slick. Maybe it has texture that provides traction. ;-) That is one thing I like about backpacking. Trying to figure how to film the beauty of nature in such a way that while you can't always feel the experience or be awed by the expanse, you can still feel some emotion or response that may prompt you to go find it yourself. I am sure you have found, we rarely experience the trail and nature in the same way someone else does.
Well done! Before all the “gear” we made due and it created a whole new scenario. We belong in the outdoors and when we bring man’s indoor comforts it removes us from learning how to survive with our wit. It’s amazing how much more that we learn when we need to and at the same time take in a whole different perspective. The hike goes from covering ground to a journey. I do appreciate gear as I’m not foolish, but I try not to get wrapped up in the ego race to impress. That Ford can get me to the destination just like the Ferrari can. Another wonderful video, Dixie! Yeaaaaa, back on the trail! Aside from all of the BEAUTIFUL footage you captured (thank you), it has been confirmed to me that it is sooo worth it to save your pennies to purchase gear that is "reliable" rather than "inexpensive" but peace of mind on the trail is worth a fortune! After all, that's what we are going out there for--peace of mind. When your gear lasts for years, and not just a trip or two, the "pricier gear" is actually less expensive in the long run; and just think about how much more one can enjoy the adventure when one does not have to worry about "inexpensive" gear breaking down--like fiberglass tent poles! I'm so glad that didn't happen to you on trail! Thanks again for another GREAT video, Dixie! You are awesome! 😊❤
I have rented camping equipment from the university near me. Tents, canoes, kayaks, etc. I mostly picked up camping items at yard sales and thrift stores. People dive into camping, purchase expensive items, and then when they decide camping is not for them, give it all away or sell for cheap! Older adults who may be going to assisted living are a good resource too.
Loved this video! I am definitely more of a budget gear buyer! I'm a believe that you don't have to spend big money to have big adventure, and I love that this video is showing so many people that exact thing! I have that same tent and I have tested it in the rain. unfortunately it didn't do well... 😬 BUT I sealed it and waterproofed it for only about $12 and now it withstands rain like a CHAMP! And it's a good tent for $27 + $12 for waterproofing. But the fiberglass poles do leave something to be desired. But if you can avoid wind, it should be ok.
I just noticed you got the braces off and your smile is wonderful. That aside, nice "gear review" and motivational video. Short weekend trips are definitely the way to get started. Even if you buy the tent and other things to drive and camp initially until you can assemble it all you will still be well on your way to getting out and enjoying the outdoors. Thanks for putting this together. I know just the family I'm going to share this with.

It reminds me of when I slept in my new sleeping bag and bivvy bag in an hotel and thought to myself 'Man what am I doing? I must be NUTS!' 🙂. I have a Zpacks Nero DCF pack but I still rock the Wal-Mart fanny pack. Only 6oz empty and it cost under 5 dollars at my local Wal-Mart. Can't beat that.

I have budget gear that I have been buying up for about 2 years I have tested some out already but I have tested it in a campground and not on a trail. LOL I am working up to a trail. Wal-Mart has great gear. My 4 person tent is still going strong and I'm an avid camper. I've had it for 4 years now. The Coleman sleeping bag and trekking poles have never failed me. Just because it's wal-mart doesn't mean that they don't carry good quality brands/products. Good vid!

I just spent 45 bucks at Walmart sporting goods, as they are doing a store rearrange and had a bunch of items for camping/hiking on clearance! I hope I can upload a pic for ya but I got camp blanket, tarp, hammock, sleeping bag liner, hand warmers, etc. The blanket alone was 70 and I paid 17!!! Yes, look around at 2nd hand stores too! This is a wonderful video. Your encouragement for folks to just get out there was so well done. Your Photography is amazing and I'm glad you love taking and editing the shots, but you are so right that no camera really captures it. And your care for all the creeping crawling slithering things is dear. This may be my favorite of all your videos I have seen. And . . I loved the Holst and the Beethoven at the end.
My first backpack was from a thrift shop, external pack. Tent was a 2-man Coleman on clearance, weighed 6 lbs. The rest was heavy too. But I got out there and did my first overnighter and was hooked. All of it was stolen a few years ago, and I could replace it with better gear, but that stuff will always hold a special spot in my heart. :)
Man, I love this video, one of my all time favorites! It's so important to show people that REI and other big name places are NOT the only sources for camping and hiking gear that works. It IS totally possible to get outdoors in less pricey gear and still be comfortable and safe. That said, I have not had good luck with the Walmart brand tents. The one I had most definitely flooded badly in one of those Mississippi downpours. I can't guarantee a most expensive tent would have stayed 100% dry but I'm certain it wouldn't have flooded as much or maybe not at all. I'm most curious how your shoes did bc those are one of the most critical pieces of gear, I think. Thanks for doing this video and encouraging people to just get out there!!!
I have learned to watch those slippery, muddy trails. Even worse when there are wet leaves on the slick slope. The older I get the more it hurts when I fall, so be careful out there Dixie!! Great video, thank you for posting!!

Excellent video, and one that I think highlights both the possibilities and also potential (significant) issues that one can encounter with very budget gear-not all inexpensive tents will break a pole after only a few uses, but some will (obviously, as yours did!) … it can be supremely difficult to winnow the chaff out if you're not already an expert, or at least well versed in hiking and backpacking. Videos like this, I think, go a long way to helping budget-conscious casual hikers and backpackers get a sense for what is possible while also highlighting those potential dangers. Also, *always* a huge fan of any hiking video that transitions the beauty of the outdoors, playing Holst's "Jupiter, The Bringer Of Jollity" and immediately contrasts it with Beethoven's 7th Symphony to highlight that warning at the end about the tent! 😃

Love this area. Somewhere in Southern Alabama in the 70's I hiked north of Brewton but south of Andalusia. The flowers were out. It was so cool and to top it off there was a gator in a pond.
Definitely buyer beware on Walmart tents. I bought an Ozark trail 2 man tent for a long bike riding trip and we had heavy rain, leaked instantly. So glad I could sleep in a car that night. I would upgrade to at least a Coleman with the floor that comes 4-6inches up the side. Great video!
Ha. I had the opposite issue. My 3-man Coleman tent leaked through the first storm (second use) but my 8-man OT has been a beast through three very rough, windy, downpour conditions.

Glad you went to the Big Tree. Love that hike. This may sound crazy but you were the one who inspired me to start section hiking the AT. Just cool to think you are hiking a place i grew up around.
When I was 18 I bought myself a Walmart tent Used regularly (every weekend) for about 10yrs then less often over the next 10yrs. Last summer I redid the water proofing and gave it to my son (he was not even in the womb when I purchased the tent) he uses it regularly ( at least once a month) still no problems. Original everything, even the stakes.

Nice waterfalls: great shots. The part of the Sipsey I was in was more like waist-to-chest-high wading with some old-growth trees, one popular cherry tree in particular (maybe it was a beech or poplar..I forget). Yep..you found it.
Great video that kind of reminds me of what we did back in 2010. We flew into America from the UK so cannot really bring any gear with us not that we had ever owned a tent or that much camping stuff. All we had booked apart from the flight into Salt Lake City was a SUV and first night in a motel. Went to Wall Mart first and as it was late August they had sales on camping gear and boy was we pleased. Got a 5 person Ozark tent which I think is a Wall Mart brand, Coleman stove + gas, sleeping bags, chairs ,cooking equipment etc and we were set (did also visit Target and K-Mart to get all the gear but mainly Wall Mart). First night setting our first ever tunnel tent up was kind of stressful as scared of braking those so thin poles...but all ok. Spent close on 3 weeks living in this gear including 10 days in Yellowstone NP. One if not the best trip of our lives in fact wish we could do it again but flight prices etc have put paid to that plus now in our 70,s. Shows you can do sort of what you did is true and the way to go. Cheers from England.
I liked the part about the owl & the shots & scenes of the fire. I always wondered about that Walmart camping stove. Great shots with the stars & trees.
Although you tried to brush off the dirt from the bottom of your pack before putting it in the tent first night, but you ended up with sand in the tent. I never put my pack in the tent when full. I unload the contents then when pack is empty, give it a good shake to remove all sand. Just my thing....hate the grit of sand in my tent. You gave a good example of how easy it is to get started hiking on overnight trips. I would always recommend putting the tent up in a yard ahead of a trip to check how it goes up, and that all bits are there. Good advice on carrying cordage. That and tenacity tape for tears in tent fabric, mats, clothing.

They helped this old gal across a bunch of water crossings and over some pretty rugged terrain. We hiked in at the end of a rainstorm. The nights dipped into the twenties. I pitched my tiny tent on an incline the first night and spent most it inchworming my way back. We were totally cut off from the world. Sound terrible? Nope. It was one of the best times of my life. Oh. And I’m 56 yo.
My husband and I haven’t done any backpacking since our oldest was born, 5.5 years ago. This past weekend we took our 3 kids (5.5, 3, 1.5) on their first camping trip. We kept it simple, went to a park not far from home, did car camping, only stayed one night. And they LOVED it! It reminded me that we don’t have to go deep into the back country to still share this with our kids ❤️ this video is another great reminder!
Kids love sleeping in tents! It’s important to keep things simple - don’t expect a 2-year-old to walk a trail! My husband was fantastic at making games for our son. “Hunt for the blue blazes!” There’s another one!
My parents took me camping when I was still in diapers. Ive got pictures of it. Now my dad was drafted for Vietnam 68-69. Not sure if he enjoyed it as much as my older brother and I did 😉
So well expressed! We did the same with our five kiddos back in the day when they were 8yrs and under. Just do what you can do, and get them out in it!

My first backpacking tent was an Ozark Trail tent from Walmart. Lightweight, seam sealed, great quality. $70. I’m still using it. Hundreds of miles, multiple nights, rainy weather, temps in the 30s, and it’s still going strong!!
Lol I bought a 400 dollar tent from REI. The first time I used it on a campsite, the tent fell apart. I went to Walmart and bought a 30 dollar tent. That was 4 years ago. I recently had to use duct tape to keep one of the legs from collapsing. Other than that. It takes me 10 minutes to put up and it drops easy to be put away. I’m pretty close to retiring it cause it’s heavy and not a back packing kind of tent. I will never buy a tent from REI although they did give me my money back for the defective tent.
My favorite parts are the "kind to animals" moments.
I also tell people that are new to the hobby, don't spend a ton of money until you are certain you want/need something better or lighter or that suits a need. Thanks for showing you don't need to spend a couple of thousand dollars just to get out in the woods.
As an old geezer who has spent a fair amount of time in the woods, I am able to see your video in 3D. Yes it's only 2 dimensional but I truly appreciate the natural beauty you capture. Cabalistic slugs, spiders scampering across your toes, and your feet hiking onward underwater. I'm happy you showed people that you can enjoy a multi day hike on a budget. The world would be a better place if more people slid their fannies down a muddy slope and listened to Barred owls as they fell asleep. That's why we do it, right? Thank you for sharing.

Look for sales and look for cheap gear ideas from other budget lists. I know it was all the way back in 2014, but even without any experience or advice from TH-cam hikers, I put together a comfortable but heavy set up for under $300 that would be fine for low daily mileage hikes e.g. hiking in 8 miles and doing day hikes from a central camp or taking a week to hike a section of the PCT.
I've been hiking alot for the last 18 months and bought 85 to 90% of my gear from Walmart. I have to say so far everything has held up and has made getting into the hobby fit into my budget. Thx for the video Dixie!!!!
Ozark trail is underrated. I’ve been through many a storm in one, dry and comfortable with its full cover fly and built in tub. No, it’s not light or high tech but it’s reliable.
I used their 65 liter pack for 2 years....little heavy but no worse than an Osprey pack. Still have it to lend to friends that want to go with me.
Yeah I had a tent from them back when they used to sell at target. It was a carcamping tent but it last for like a decade through multiple storms.
I have two day packs from them I got for $8 like 10 years ago. They've survived hundreds of miles on the trail and countless pitches of climbing. If you're just starting out or want to go cheap they've got solid stuff. You might get a couple questions on hikes from pretentious people sometimes, but who cares.
Only major issue is I'd rather support local than go to Walmart, but nothing wrong with their gear.
My first trekking poles, sleeping bag, and cookset for my first backpacking trip were all purchased at Wal-Mart. I was totally stoked to upgrade to better quality and lighter gear as I got more experienced, but I don't remember ever having real issues with the Wal-Mart gear. A little heavy and bulky, but hey'.
This is an excellent video, as it’s not as much educational as it is genuine, a more “ Everyman” type hiking experience . It definitely was more real world, and enjoyable to watch. You seemed to be happy doing it, and as you hiked, your joy for what you do shined through. Thank you!!!

I think it's better seeing me up mentally me for my first backpacking trip next weekend. Like, there will be bugs and snakes and possibly cold water and downed trees that are hard to climb over with a pack on, okay, check. But still beautiful.
I feel very unprepared in other ways. The used back i bought is tiny. Still need some of the other gear. Only 2 nights so hey.

These are always fun, and I gotta give credit to ozark trail, I can tell they actually make an effort to make good affordable gear.
I know these kind of videos aren’t the cheapest to make but I think a series of these themed gear reviews would be awesome! Like an Amazon only challenge, Academy challenge, REI challenge, etc. Maybe this will show which retailers have better quality and selection of gear readily available. Like, is Walmart gear really cheaper if you have to drive to every Walmart in the region to find the gear you need?
Sipsey Wilderness is one of our favorite places - unique rock formations - waterfalls- usually not a lot of people - big beautiful trees! Neat place
My first backpacking tent came from Wal-Mart in the 90's. It worked well, kept the rain out and went a lot of places. Thanks for reminding us that not all your gear has to be expensive or from a certain company. Getting on trail is what's important.

I only went above my budged with my beacon, and that's kinda obligated, slowly building up my gear, all I ask for Christmas is camping and hiking gear, which is a great way to get stuff without having to buy them perse. Hi Dixie! I bought a tent like that & left it up in the back yard the entire spring & summer of 2020. It turned kind of gray, but it never leaked even though it poured rain several times. It's been a good value for this car camper/wannabe backpacker- at least so far;)

Great video dixie. When I started I bought all my gear from Walmart (tent, 3 season sleeping bag, cook pot, dry bags, and a few other small things) and rest from Amazon. Most of it is great gear that I still have and use. Some things I've upgraded over time. Paid just under $300 and base weight was 16 pounds. I was able to take my time and gather lightweight and inexpensive gear until I had everything. In a pinch I still use Walmart.

Us poor folks get a lot of our gear at Walmart and Academy.
When I started backpacking with my family, Walmart gear was a great starter. Once we realized that the kids enjoyed backpacking we have slowly upgraded as the budget allowed.
I went camping on a beach and there were high winds, everyone that had a "name brand" tent did fine, everyone out there with Ozark Trail tents were dealing with broken poles and collapsed tents all night. I think Walmart gear is fine for quick car camping trips with good weather, but once any sort of elements are introduced the more expensive stuff proves its value quickly.
I've camped countless times on the coast of Texas in an ozark trail tent and never had one issue.
I have a Ozark tent that's a little bit over 6 years old and camp often. I have never had any problems and have been in some rough storms in it. But I do but a tarp over it although I sprayed it with water guard.
I agree. We had a backyard camp out with several different kinds of tents. We had a heavy windstorm that night and only the ozark tent went down. The folks camping in that one had to go into other people's tents.
I don't comment much, but I had to here. I've been watching your videos for a while and this one is the best yet. Great production, funny & folksy yet informative and very judicious use of effects. I know that it would take backpackers like me years to be able to take footage like this, and I for one am very glad you do it for us. Thank you - this is a truly fun, slick, informative and yet thoroughly enjoyable video.
Funny, when you were setting up your tent the second night I thought, "What will she do if the tentpole breaks?" I had that happen with my REI Quarterdome when I was section hiking the PCT. Luckily I was only a few miles from my resupply.

You can use your trekking poles just put one on each side and run a line and hang it through the loops where the tent pole runs through

Alabama is so beautiful. I went to Monte Sano State Park 4 years ago amd hiked all through it. I was amazed at all of the natural rockwork on the mountain. It was stunning! I went at the end of March so all of the trees had fresh leaves which just made everything that much prettier.

Your comment about getting out there rings so true. I love riding my gravel or MTB and seeing leaves getting blown by the wind. It makes them look alive and moving on their own.

Thank you for this....very new to hiking. Just day hiking right now. I have some physical challenges to sort out, and get a feel for just being back out in nature again. Haven't been into it since I was a kid. (50s now). I've been slowly getting gear. having shoulder and back issues, I saved up to get a decent osprey bag (20L tempest) I wanted to keep the bag size manageable, so I wouldn't be tempted to load it with everything and the kitchen sink lol. Next will be my shoes and poles. Again will save up, and get something decent. I don't feel I need the "Best", I'm not that sort of person. I'm just thinking in terms of health / safety for myself that it would be better. Other than those few things, everything else will be budget stuff.
At the end when "I vow to thee my country" came in, that achingly beautiful melody seemed like a fitting tribute to all of nature. Nice pick Dixie gal. God bless you and keep you safe.

Like you recommended I eventually got gear over time and knew people who had things I could borrow until I was able to get it myself. Back in March, I took leave from work and went on a month long road trip to hike and camp at several National Parks and forests. I was sitting at my office desk today feeling kind of down and missing the outdoors. Even though you lament the fact that your vids are "just" a 2D representation of nature, this one took me back to my own beautiful experiences. Thank you for that.
When I started equipping myself for the JMT, I needed a new tent, sleeping bag, boots, and stove. My goal was to purchase one big thing each month, and to fund it, I completely stopped eating out, buying goodies to eat, fast food; no purchases of cosmetics or new clothing that was not needed for my trek, etc. Also, since I am not a coffee drinker, it was very easy for me to not spend money on fancy drinks. It was amazing how quickly I was able to save up for my gear. That year, I bought a used pack (5 lbs) at an REI parking lot sale for $35, which I used for 2 seasons. I have since upgraded to a ULA Catalyst. Thank you for doing this challenge. Very informative.

The way I understand it, they tend to compete with local store products, so if you look for Walmarts closer to sporting goods stores you may have better luck.

I agree with the idea of gathering the best possible gear over time rather than buying whatever inexpensive things you can find that are immediately available. I have purchased so many replacement items in effort to get the weight down. Price and weight are a delicate balance.

That is one thing I like about backpacking. Trying to figure how to film the beauty of nature in such a way that while you can't always feel the experience or be awed by the expanse, you can still feel some emotion or response that may prompt you to go find it yourself. I am sure you have found, we rarely experience the trail and nature in the same way someone else does.
Well done! Before all the “gear” we made due and it created a whole new scenario. We belong in the outdoors and when we bring man’s indoor comforts it removes us from learning how to survive with our wit. It’s amazing how much more that we learn when we need to and at the same time take in a whole different perspective. The hike goes from covering ground to a journey.
I do appreciate gear as I’m not foolish, but I try not to get wrapped up in the ego race to impress. That Ford can get me to the destination just like the Ferrari can.

Another wonderful video, Dixie! Yeaaaaa, back on the trail! Aside from all of the BEAUTIFUL footage you captured (thank you), it has been confirmed to me that it is sooo worth it to save your pennies to purchase gear that is "reliable" rather than "inexpensive" but peace of mind on the trail is worth a fortune! After all, that's what we are going out there for--peace of mind.
When your gear lasts for years, and not just a trip or two, the "pricier gear" is actually less expensive in the long run; and just think about how much more one can enjoy the adventure when one does not have to worry about "inexpensive" gear breaking down--like fiberglass tent poles! I'm so glad that didn't happen to you on trail!

I have rented camping equipment from the university near me. Tents, canoes, kayaks, etc.
I mostly picked up camping items at yard sales and thrift stores.
People dive into camping, purchase expensive items, and then when they decide camping is not for them, give it all away or sell for cheap!
Older adults who may be going to assisted living are a good resource too.
Loved this video! I am definitely more of a budget gear buyer! I'm a believe that you don't have to spend big money to have big adventure, and I love that this video is showing so many people that exact thing!
I have that same tent and I have tested it in the rain. unfortunately it didn't do well... 😬 BUT I sealed it and waterproofed it for only about $12 and now it withstands rain like a CHAMP! And it's a good tent for $27 + $12 for waterproofing. But the fiberglass poles do leave something to be desired. But if you can avoid wind, it should be ok.

I just noticed you got the braces off and your smile is wonderful. That aside, nice "gear review" and motivational video. Short weekend trips are definitely the way to get started. Even if you buy the tent and other things to drive and camp initially until you can assemble it all you will still be well on your way to getting out and enjoying the outdoors. I have a Zpacks Nero DCF pack but I still rock the Wal-Mart fanny pack. Only 6oz empty and it cost under 5 dollars at my local Wal-Mart. Can't beat that.
I rock a lot of Walmart stuff. My pack is the 35L Arrowhead. (And yes, I also use a Walmart fanny pack).
But my tent is a Zpacks Duplex.

Wal-Mart has great gear. My 4 person tent is still going strong and I'm an avid camper. I've had it for 4 years now. The Coleman sleeping bag and trekking poles have never failed me. Just because it's wal-mart doesn't mean that they don't carry good quality brands/products. Good vid!

I just spent 45 bucks at Walmart sporting goods, as they are doing a store rearrange and had a bunch of items for camping/hiking on clearance! I hope I can upload a pic for ya but I got camp blanket, tarp, hammock, sleeping bag liner, hand warmers, etc. The blanket alone was 70 and I paid 17!!! Yes, look around at 2nd hand stores too! This is a wonderful video. Your encouragement for folks to just get out there was so well done. Your Photography is amazing and I'm glad you love taking and editing the shots, but you are so right that no camera really captures it. And your care for all the creeping crawling slithering things is dear. This may be my favorite of all your videos I have seen. And . . I loved the Holst and the Beethoven at the end.
My first backpack was from a thrift shop, external pack. Tent was a 2-man Coleman on clearance, weighed 6 lbs. The rest was heavy too. But I got out there and did my first overnighter and was hooked. All of it was stolen a few years ago, and I could replace it with better gear, but that stuff will always hold a special spot in my heart. :)
Man, I love this video, one of my all time favorites! It's so important to show people that REI and other big name places are NOT the only sources for camping and hiking gear that works. It IS totally possible to get outdoors in less pricey gear and still be comfortable and safe. That said, I have not had good luck with the Walmart brand tents. The one I had most definitely flooded badly in one of those Mississippi downpours. I can't guarantee a most expensive tent would have stayed 100% dry but I'm certain it wouldn't have flooded as much or maybe not at all. I'm most curious how your shoes did bc those are one of the most critical pieces of gear, I think. Thanks for doing this video and encouraging people to just get out there!!!

I have learned to watch those slippery, muddy trails. Even worse when there are wet leaves on the slick slope. The older I get the more it hurts when I fall, so be careful out there Dixie!!

Excellent video, and one that I think highlights both the possibilities and also potential (significant) issues that one can encounter with very budget gear-not all inexpensive tents will break a pole after only a few uses, but some will (obviously, as yours did!) … it can be supremely difficult to winnow the chaff out if you're not already an expert, or at least well versed in hiking and backpacking. Videos like this, I think, go a long way to helping budget-conscious casual hikers and backpackers get a sense for what is possible while also highlighting those potential dangers.
Also, *always* a huge fan of any hiking video that transitions the beauty of the outdoors, playing Holst's "Jupiter, The Bringer Of Jollity" and immediately contrasts it with Beethoven's 7th Symphony to highlight that warning at the end about the tent! 😃

Love this area. Somewhere in Southern Alabama in the 70's I hiked north of Brewton but south of Andalusia. The flowers were out. It was so cool and to top it off there was a gator in a pond.
Definitely buyer beware on Walmart tents. I bought an Ozark trail 2 man tent for a long bike riding trip and we had heavy rain, leaked instantly. So glad I could sleep in a car that night. I would upgrade to at least a Coleman with the floor that comes 4-6inches up the side. Great video!
Ha. I had the opposite issue. My 3-man Coleman tent leaked through the first storm (second use) but my 8-man OT has been a beast through three very rough, windy, downpour conditions.

When I was 18 I bought myself a Walmart tent
Used regularly (every weekend) for about 10yrs then less often over the next 10yrs. Last summer I redid the water proofing and gave it to my son (he was not even in the womb when I purchased the tent) he uses it regularly ( at least once a month) still no problems. Original everything, even the stakes.

Nice waterfalls: great shots. The part of the Sipsey I was in was more like waist-to-chest-high wading with some old-growth trees, one popular cherry tree in particular (maybe it was a beech or poplar..I forget).

Great video that kind of reminds me of what we did back in 2010. We flew into America from the UK so cannot really bring any gear with us not that we had ever owned a tent or that much camping stuff. All we had booked apart from the flight into Salt Lake City was a SUV and first night in a motel. Went to Wall Mart first and as it was late August they had sales on camping gear and boy was we pleased. Got a 5 person Ozark tent which I think is a Wall Mart brand, Coleman stove + gas, sleeping bags, chairs ,cooking equipment etc and we were set (did also visit Target and K-Mart to get all the gear but mainly Wall Mart). First night setting our first ever tunnel tent up was kind of stressful as scared of braking those so thin poles...but all ok. Spent close on 3 weeks living in this gear including 10 days in Yellowstone NP. One if not the best trip of our lives in fact wish we could do it again but flight prices etc have put paid to that plus now in our 70,s. Shows you can do sort of what you did is true and the way to go. Cheers from England.

Although you tried to brush off the dirt from the bottom of your pack before putting it in the tent first night, but you ended up with sand in the tent. I never put my pack in the tent when full. I unload the contents then when pack is empty, give it a good shake to remove all sand. Just my thing....hate the grit of sand in my tent.
You gave a good example of how easy it is to get started hiking on overnight trips. I would always recommend putting the tent up in a yard ahead of a trip to check how it goes up, and that all bits are there. Good advice on carrying cordage. That and tenacity tape for tears in tent fabric, mats, clothing.
