Miss Dixie, I have to tell you that you remain my absolute favorite thru hiker and will always hold a place in my heart as the one who made me realize I could combine hiking and camping and answered all the questions no matter how awkward with grace and dignity. I am finally leaving for my AT Nobo in Spring of 2023 and you are a wonderful resource and an incredibly sweet person. Thank you for the inspiration Dixie. The funny part is the algorithm put your AT and PCT documentaries in my feed for the longest time but I didn't watch at first because I was just that intimidated thinking I could never be that athletic again. I got a surgically implanted lumbar spinal stimulation device and I could get back out on trail after almost 6 years off trail because of issues. When I realized I was getting a second chance at an active life I finally dared to watch the videos of that sweet southern girl that hikes the really long trails. She was modest and sweet and explained to me that I could in fact hike long trails too and I started to believe her. She answered all the questions I couldn't bring myself to ask anyone and kept me motivated as I recovered from surgical complications and slowly started to work my way up to ever longer day hikes again. It took me 3 years to work my way up to it, but I managed my first 9 mile day on trail ever the other week and will have my first double digit mileage day here very soon. You literally changed my lifefor the better even though I never met you. You encouraged me to take a chance with this surgery and it was a huge risk of permanent damage if the wrong things happened at the right time during surgery or recovery. That device they sewed onto my spine is the only reason I can hike as far as I can today and the only treatment option that gave me a chance to hike the AT at all. Not that long ago things weren't looking very good for my future but you have this way about you that encourages folks to never give up. To face our fears. You are the most influential stranger of my entire life and "thank you" seems like such a small pittance in exchange for what I got back in my life because you believe in people you've never even met. I was sure the good days were long gone for me and before I found your content I was sure I could never do what you've done on the long trails. Please don't EVER stop being who you are and the way you are. You save lives girl and you don't even know it. I vicariously lived through you on your hikes when things were the worst and couldn't have looked more dark and gloomy and simply all over for me.

I did a similar Walmart gear only trip last year. 4 days, 3 nights. I only went to one Walmart for everything I used. Literally bought it all on my way to the trail. Do to lack of selection I bought the 2 person backpacking tent. It was on sale for $15.00. Found that same pack in the hunting section. Went with the Stanley cook pot which included those tiny little green cups. Used a Stanley cook stove. Coldest night dipped into the high 40's so opted for 2 small fleece blankets, a mylar emergency blanket and got that same closed cell foam pad for I think $10.00. I put down the pad, then space blanket, then fleece blanket. Other fleece over me and I was fine. I sleep warm anyway. The pack held up really well and I occasionally still use it for areas I might be bushwhacking through. The tent did really well also. I did spray it with a water repellent. I've since found aluminum poles that fit it perfectly. Really lightened up that 2P tent. For stakes I just used sticks. I still take that tent out when my wife and I take our dog with us which is always. I sleep in it with the dog and she sleeps in the duplex. I'm not a fan of Walmart but if that was my only option, I could definitely enjoy the outdoors on a pretty tight budget. I didn't do the Walmart clothing or shoes. I did use those same trekking poles. They were fine but there are better options for the price out there. All in all, I can't complain about the things I used on that trip. I think I spent around $150.00 for everything including food for the trip. Prices were a lot better a year ago.

Hey, I just wanted to say I watched Dixie to main 2 years ago, I planned for months to take my hike in 22 but early last year I started having health panic attacks witch included a fixation on hospital accessibility. After 6 months of that I desided there was no way I could make the hike. I however did overcome my problems but to late. I had no savings, had not been able to prepare almost all besides the 100s of hours of videos I watch, many yours. 3 weeks ago late April my dad called me up and said, hey I really think you should hike this year. And so we talked and he offered me a small but also very enabling weekly budget if I could make the rest work, after a long week of juggling my finances and life I settled on may 15th. I am starting my hike the 15th and I'm scared and exited and everything in between. None of it would have happened without your videos.

I used to buy those Ozark Trail tents for car camping. Had a heck of a storm roll through one night. Me and my friend were sitting there holding the poles up as the whole tent was flexing in and out. Nothing broke and we just laughed about that crazy night later. Going to WalMart and heading out is a perfectly legitimate way for people to get their feet wet so long as the weather is warm.

I usually carry a 3" piece of copper tubing (with a bit of duct tape) to fix broken tent poles. If you have access to a handy-man/plumber type character, they will have stuff like that lying around. I understand that serious backpackers don't carry anything that they use less than four times a day, but I sleep better knowing that a broken tent pole is a minor inconvenience rather than an emergency.

Dear Dixie, I loved this video. I’ve been backpacking since I was 10 years old in 1957. I am planning to do a “longest surviving gear” hike this summer. I will use my 1969 Kelly Mountaineer/ A4 backpack, my Svea 123 stove, a 35ish year old Camp 7 bag, an ensolite pad, a Marmot Burrow 1 person Goretex tent, an Olympus XA film camera and an AA cell incandescent flashlight. I do have camp cups and plates to take that have been along for at least 50 years. :)

    • @mhoefler914
      @mhoefler914 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I used a Svea 123 for years and loved the efficiency of it----a whole weekend with no extra fuel. Then it became a valuable item and I sold it, even though the threads holding the wick would not open. Those exterior framed backpacks distribute the weight really well and make organization much easier. New people may find them at garage sales and can pick them up, adjust the length to themselves and have a very usable and free-ish pack to use for years. Hope you can still get film developed. Sounds like fun.

I am sure they are happy you did this video and I think it was a great idea! Also, you said something to the effect of sometimes you video leaves and stuff because it’s so magical in real life and 3-D but looks dumb to you on video. You do phenomenal videography! I first purchased an Amazon Teton pack, then I opted for a Gregory. 5.5 lbs empty. Carried what I named
“Big Bertha” for two years. That pack is heavy, but well suited for a long haul with weight. Hugged my back and body very well. Even hiked 10+ miles with unknown at the time, broken ribs with it. As I became lighter with gear, I couldn’t fill or justify the pack anymore. Still have it for perhaps some winter expeditions.

    • @MrDanAng1
      @MrDanAng1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

3.66 lbs isn't the lightest pack, by far, but it's still decently light.
A traditional backpack is almost always over 5 lbs and most of them in the 6-8 lbs range, with very few lighter or heavier than that.

    • @rogerwilco1777

My 15yr old 40ltr camelbak weighs 5.5lbs. It is one of those 'military' style packs so its kinda tough? I live where theres lots of jagged pumice and thorny bushes, and I usually do kayak or dirtbike camping so an extra lb or 2 might be worth the 'toughness'?
I wanna upgrade but it seems like the 'tough' backpacks haven't lost much weight over the years?

As someone that has used Ozark tents extensively, they will all leak eventually. New ones will resist water logging and leakage for the first couple of rains but once they are set up and tore down a few times, one good 3 hour rain storm will cause leakage. Not at seams mind you, but actual osmosis through the material the tents are made of.
I have offset this issue by buying a 3 pack of 9x12 clear plastic paint drops from the Walmart paint dept. I don't use them for light rain forecasts but when I know it's going to be a frog strangler, I cover the tent with the plastic and fold the extra under the tent and this keeps the tent from leaking. Also, I use a large flash from an older tent to go over everything to help deflect heavy rain.
I carried ozark tents across the USA when I did my backpacking hike from Florida to Santa Monica between July 2018 and January 2020.
I still spend a lot of time in the woods doing photography and I carry my Walmart Ozark 4 person tent, for me, the weight is not an issue compared to the smaller ones. My laptop and camera equipment weigh in more than the tents, lol.
    Anyway, that's my observations.

I absolutely love your TH-cam videos, and now I am getting back into camping and hiking.
After watching just about all of your TH-cam videos by now.
I have to admit Dixie you definitely know what you are talking about and have the experience to proof it!
Now, about this particular TH-cam video. I went to my local Walmart store and was looking through the camping and hiking gear section.
And just as I was about to walk out, I decided to swing by the clearance area. And low and behold I found a "Slumberjack Dallas Divide" 65 liter backpack on clearance for $29.99.
And because of the comments you had said about it. I decided to buy it.
After that I went to the Slumberjack website, and found that they rate this backpack at some 7 pounds.
But after using it for a few camping and hiking trips I don't find it as heavy.

I have to say that I’ve been impressed with ozark trail items. Have the 2 person tent and it has lasted many trips and storms. I typically don’t camp if it’s going to be below freezing, but had a trip planned during a cold snap. Went to Walmart and got their 15 degree mummy bag. It kept me super warm and I am typically a cold person.

During Covid I was a few hours from home and had the urge to go camping in Colorado. I didn’t want to drive home so figured I would just buy the gear along the way. That was the only tent I could find anywhere. I used it that week with no issues. A year later i camped for 6 weeks in Colorado. Used the tent for the Maroon Bells Loop hike. Had no issues. I stayed dry and it held up good in the winds. Since then I have used it multiple times camping in area lakes. But seeing that pole snap does bring me concerts now. But for less than 30 dollars it has been a great little tent.

I bought a Ozark Trails 55 liter pack a few years ago that is great. It fits well, has a good number of pockets, front access into the main compartment , and good amount of space( trying to fit my ealmart sleeping bag inside is a challenge). For the dry sacks the multi size 3 pack have been more useful, they aren't completely waterproof but are a lighter fabric and smaller sizes. I have used them for everything from organizing tshirts and socks on deployment to holding film/ camera when hiking.

The girlfriend and I were bikepacking in Oklahoma a few years back. We used very high quality and expensive gear, our tent being a pricey North Face. One day we were biking through the Cookson Hills right into a good thunderstorm. No problem---except that the tent poles fell off my bike somewhere along the road. Oops. We had to rent a cabin for that night, and found out that my rear wheel had put large holes in the rainfly and the body of the tent. Double oops. Girlfriend was not happy. The next day we found out that there was no fancy backpacking store or outfitters anywhere near, but there was a Wal-Mart. Went there and bought for $39 an Ozark Trail 4-person tent. Heavy and huge, and it came with a footprint. We camped in the woods that night and hoped for the best. A terrific storm rolled in: crazy rain and wind, lightning strikes all around. Woke up to find not a drop of water in the tent. Pretty cool. I still have that tent.

This was a fun video. Thanks for doing this!
One of my best budget friendly scores was finding a titanium spork on trail. Someone had dropped it and was long gone, so I took it home. :)

I have the Ozark Trail 36L pack for my day pack. I know 36L sounds large for a day pack, but I use a 2L bladder, carry some gear (tarp, puffy jacket, emergency sleeping bag, stove, food, etc.) in case of an emergency and I can't get back to my vehicle. I also hike with a dog which means I carry a lot more water than what I need, emergency food for him if we are stuck out on trail, and a lift harness in case he is injured. Anyway, I absolutely love the pack - load lifters, hip pockets, top and bottom compression straps, and a bunch of other features for the price. It weighs 3.13 lbs, cost $56 (for the gray, which is what I opted for, there is also a dark green and gray with orange trim that is only $48.84), is wicked comfortable, and I really do love it. Plus for the price, I don't feel like I have to baby it. 🙂

I have a good amount of gear from Walmart! My dogs sleep system is only Walmart gear. The closed cell foam pad is his sleeping pad and the cut off portion is now my sit pad for my day hikes 😆 kind of justified the $27 price. I do agree it is a bit pricey but using it for two things helps a bit

I grew up Walmart camping, last summer I forgot my Zpacks duplex tent at home so got a tent at Walmart. Completely useless in the rain I got wet every night 🙄. A lot of their gear works perfectly fine but from my experience the tents are useless. Love your content keep it up

Great and thorough list. Walmart has a lot more options online for backpacking gear, some ultralight. If you have time to shop in advance and wait a week for it to arrive you can get even better stuff then you did , like a $24. Inflatable 1.1 lb. Sleep pad. It would be fun to see a review like that.

Thank you for the gear review. I also bought the Ozark Trail 1 person tent from Walmart and used it several times out west. It stood up well even in the high winds of White Sands NM. It is quite roomy for one person (and a great price) and I am glad to finally see it get a review (even if your pole broke). It only rained on me once but it was quite a downpour (as is typical in the desert southwest). A little water came in on one corner but I expect I can fix that with seamseal.

Walmart has definitely up there game when it comes to camping and hiking gear. Because now they are starting to carry some better brands that you normally wouldn't expect to see at a Walmart store.
For example, they now carry Klymit brand of camping and hiking gear. I was able to buy a Klymit sleeping pillow that I found to be pretty darn comfortable. And it comes in a nice little carrying bag and only weighs 3.2 ounces.
Unfortunately my local Walmart store did have the two different types of Trekking poles. But the ones you (Dixie) ended up buying. My local Walmart did have one pair, but the box they come in. Looked like someone either got into them to check them out. Or had returned them for some reason or another. So I had to pass on those and get the "Outdoor Products" brand of Trekking poles that were on sale for $11.99.
And speaking of "Outdoor Products" brand of camping and hiking gear. A few years ago I bought a "Outdoor Products" 30 liter backpack.
I have to admit that for the price, the quality is much better than I would have expected.
I love all the different types of pockets and other places to put things. For a nice day hike and it will carry everything you need and probably more.
I just wish that Walmart would up there game on the "Outdoor Products" backpacks. Because at least at my local Walmart store. The "Outdoor Products" 30 liter daypack is all they seem to have in stock.
For all you camping and hiking gear enthusiast out there. Have fun and get out into the wild with whatever you can afford.
Because like Dixie says, you don't have to buy expensive camping and hiking gear. To go out for a weekend camping and hiking trip.
And there are plenty of different places where you can find some really good deals on what you are looking for and can afford.

Fun video! I still have and Ozark trail one person tent that I picked up from Walmart about 5 years ago... It's a bit heavy, but it's my favorite tent!! It has held up to 40 mph sustained winds and 60 mile an hour gusts!!

Great video! I have the ozark trail tent and tested it in the rain. It did NOT do well. But with $12 of waterproofing and seam sealer, it's now trail worthy. As you pointed out, the fiber glass poles are concerning so shouldn't be relied on in windy conditions. But not a bag starter tent for someone trying out backpacking.
    Love your videos!

I was in a pinch and bought this exact tent and used it for one night while at Katahdin, it down poured most the night and the inside stayed dry. I did not seam seal it or anything extra and had no issues. I did have condensation on the inside and used a emergency blanket as a footprint.
