This tape suffered some minor damage, but I did my best to restore its play-ability for transferring to digital. Enjoy folks. By the way, other footage from this exact same show found here: th-cam.com/video/OybQ2sV0804/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the upload. I saw the next show on 8/29 in Charlottesville, VA. There is a brief account of it in the book "Love is a Mix Tape" by Rob Sheffield.
can anyone confirm who opened? I think Pavement played two shows at the ME Upstairs, and the one i saw had Red Gel open (a mix between Red Bliss and Kudgel)... just curious if this is that same show. I remember seeing Gary Young hanging outside on the sidewalk before the show, sitting down near the entrance. "YOU GUYS HERE FOR THE ROCK SHOW?!" This was pre-internet and i thought he was just another homeless dude in Central Sq and was surprised to see him behind the drums a few hours later.
The master tape suffered water damage years ago. I had to clean the residue (mold derived) off the tape, inch by inch. This took me hours. The white static lines you see are a result of permanent damage to the tape, it is not a tracking issue. I tested playback in multiple VCRs, and this is the best you're ever going to get.
@@thewrongheronetwork7999 I was totally joking about the tracking--it just reminded me of the old VHS days! Thanks for cleaning up this tape--such a cool show, and super fun to watch!
This is from the same performance that ended up on "Stuff Up The Cracks" for the last 2 songs (Mother Mary/Box Elder)! I wonder if the full tapes from that recording exist, to match back to this amazing video?
RIP Gary Young. Legend
Here more than anywhere you can see how Gary was essential to the idea of Pavement
Goodbye Gary Young...it was cool having an older guy in your band...like Jet Black before you...awesome
my band played here 2 years ago.. we covered she believes. didnt kno it had been played on the very same stage by the band themselves

What a treasure. Thank you so much for uploading this.
this is sick theres hardly any videos of pavement in 91 on here so THANKS
Did they do more performances in '91 other than Maxwell's?
They were basically complete 1991 it just took a whole year for slanted to release
@@9vbattery297Club Babyhead in Providence, which I think was the day before this show
wowww Pavement at Middle East UPSTAIRS? thank you for sharing, this is incredible. wish i could have been there but sadly i was 6 years old
Yeah I can't believe they're playing upstairs. Who the hell was downstairs?
Downstairs was a former bowling alley used for storage, although I think renovations started in fall 91
This is amazing, thanks.
The funniest part is them constantly having to wrangle Gary and herd him back to his drumset.

Did they also performed at Trax the year before and in '92?
Thank you so much!
Very good 👍. Band im love 💘 it im enjoy watching it 😊 🤟
Woah so Bob Nastonovich and Mark Ibold have been there since pretty much the beginning
And Spiral Stairs
Great to see She Believes live. This is a real gem. Love to see them do Forklift and From Now On.
Did he say their second show ever?/? WOw, what a treat!
i don't think this was their second show, maybe fourth or fifth but definitely very early on in the band's career
idk if you guys know this but i think that guy's been down
This is going way back. Anyone have Columbia SC?
Kid's gorgeous.

Sexual Milkshake and Red Cudgel opened. Both videos are uploaded already on this channel.
ah, i knew i had seen Sexual Milkshake before but thought they opened for the Unrest show I saw... maybe they played that show too.
Gary was making his way down the line to get in, handing out fruit or something
Maybe wheez that cough! Bap bap bada ba
They played upstairs?!
Let the Plant Man plant.
This is amazing. Thanks for posting.
Can someone adjust the tracking? ;)

We listened to his record a lot in Hoboken and Bob especially loved to play “Golden Boys.”
