  • In this week's Trailwise video, certified master 4x4 trainer Nena Barlow demonstrates the how and why of airing down tires for better performance off-road. Nena shows the tools she uses and the techniques she has gathered over the years for determining just how much to air down for improved traction, preventing flats, and a smoother ride. Just aired down for the first time today in my new Rubicon that’s on 35” tires. It was magical! Like driving on pillows. Thanks for the help and tips!

Would you please let me know what you used to air your tires back up? It looked like a wire connected to your winch??

Nena, I have a 2005 LJ Rubicon. I am suspecting my front elocker is not working correctly. When I hit the locker switch the rear seems to lock correctly based upon the Locked dash light flashes then goes solid. when I hit locker switch again the Front Locked dash light flashes but does not go solid. What does it mean if Front Locked dash light continues to flash without ever going solid?

Great video, There is another valuable point to airing down your tyres, that is it minimises damage to the environment/trail by not digging ruts. NZ🇳🇿

How do you manage when your trails are split by highways ( roads in UK 😊)
Most green lanes here are quite short & split by fairly lengthy drives on road at higher speeds ... is it necessary to air back up if only travelling short distances ( 1 or 2 miles maybe ) ?? Would it be best to air down conservatively ?

Hi Nena! Great channel/ first time viewer here! One more reason to air down your tires is to smooth out the washboarding on gravel roads. It’s magic.

How low would you go with that setup before you would be concerned about losing a bead? I’m running the same tires on a similar weight Jeep and I have never gone below 13 lbs.

    • @jeepschool
      @jeepschool  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Sounds like you are pretty dialed in. But know that not all wheels are created equal! These are Method Racing Wheels Trail Series with Bead Grip. I will run these down to 10-11 psi where on this same Jeep with same tires but different wheels I would only go to 12-13. That doesn't sound like a lot but that little 20% and can make a big difference in soft sand or big chunky ledges. I am fairly conservative on tire pressure--I haven't tried single digits on these wheels to see where the de-bead point is, but I have debeaded tires on non-Method wheels at 12-13 when the Jeep was heavily loaded (gear and people) on the Rubicon Trail.

Hi Nena, great channel. So informative.
Question, does your front bumper have slots for an rv towbar?
If so what brand is it? Does it cone with the winch already attached?

i concur. just bought my first jeep, midFeb. I have watched a lot of videos, most are about mods and showing installs, if educational. I just found Nena in a search for when and why to use JLUR lockers. I just continued watching her videos. Born to teach. Chick here. Impressive!

hi nena thx for great educational videos! im running RT tyres (somewhere inbetween AT and MT?) for 8000miles now and considering getting MT tyres this time. a bit worrying about noises on pavement. Usually how long distance you drive each time to go to your favourtie trail courses? Driving MT doesnt bother you much on that trip?

I really enjoy the way you explain things. It's very helpful. I'm just getting into this hobby so that my wife and I can explore all that N AZ has to offer. I have to somehow justify all that $$$ I've sunk into my truck. :))) Thanks for taking the time.

So if you are in Moab running trails for a week, driving to and from trails that are a little farther out of town like Elephant Hill or Top of the World, would you air back up every day to make it back to town or just leave them aired down for the week?

Doesnt airing down your tire also help to keep tearing up the terrain?
I know technique is also a big part of that (not spinning tires). Very soft pillowy tires will roll over soft ground leaving minimal tracks.

Dam, not many women know a lot about off-roading and jeeps. Thanks for the tips. I'm new to jeeps, but have been off roading with dirt bikes, ATC, and snow mobiles all my life.
