Thanks for this, Matt! It would be cool to do a video talking about working with a designer and a printer on making the physical books. I feel like if I went at it on my own id have a design I really liked it that maybe no one could produce in quantity for me because of my choice of sizing or material (at least not at a reasonable price). I, for one, would be totally down for a short series in 2022 on making a photo book from start to finish, including important details or hints to make the process simpler.
I don’t want to rush when the next book will really begin in production as you’ve really gotta have everything dialed in there, but I will absolutely share that process as thoroughly as I can here on the channel. In early 2022, I’ll be sharing a look back, sort of mini documentary about making Friend of Mine. Specifically, the process of publishing and distributing everything myself with all of the signing and shipping documented. That’s one I’m really excited to share because my whole goal is to just show what the process looked like for me. I always wish I could see more photographers that I follow share how they do whatever they do. Less of the “mystique”. To each their own, of course. I just love seeing the process and how it differs for everyone.
All about being able to share the book and take it outside of just one room. Seeing the book outside of just a spine on the shelf, you appreciate all of the subtle details and choices that much more. Knit Club is fantastic, one of my favorites of 2021.
I had no idea about the existence of photo books like these until recently. I tried getting into it more yet it's not easy to find great books and places that sell them here in Germany. I need to get more into the scene yet all I found so far was rather uninspiring and lacking care and a sense for the beauty of photography. I started experimenting with creating my own books yet it's also not easy getting high quality prints without driving up the production cost of the book into where it just makes no sense. It's a journey. And it gave me a new perspective on photography. I thoroughly enjoy you talking about your favorite books! Thanks
I have plenty of books myself, and my go to, time after time, take on the go, is always An Attic Full of Trains-Alberto di Lenardo. The size is smaller than most. the cover feels like a thin cardboard/cardstock and the texture of the matte pages just adds so much to the experience of feeling each image. Lovely video Matt. i always like to listen to you talk about my personal favorite medium to experience photography. The photo book.
Someday I'd like to make a book. You keep getting me excited to do one. Can't decide if I want to do all the old homesteads and barns of the valley I live in, which date back to the early 1900's or just something more about how the valley looks at this point and some of the interesting features going on today.
Great video! I have a pitifully small collection of photo books. Currently waiting for Willems Sunny Side to come out and obviously have Greers new one on pre-order! My dream is a photobook of my own work.
Finally got Hannah Starkey's book on your recommendation from a while ago. Blown away by it, beautiful work, my favourite book...at the moment. Thanks, keep up the good work and Happy New Year to you and your family.
Another great video and thank you for introducing me to Baltimore Photo Space! They are less than 5 miles from where I live and I've never heard of them before! :)
Thank you for sharing your thoughts here. Out of the few short run photobooks I've made, I try to go in with a completely different headspace than the one before. Often I get very caught up in the form of the object, paper, binding etc, because I've become a nerd for all things printed. Now, that I'm several projects in I'm retraining myself to make sure the form follows the content. Being a small time photographer, self publisher, we're all constrained by money and volume. When I'm up to that, and I can make something offset, smyth sewn, with a a dust jacket, and a case, fold outs, tipped in images on the embossed cover -- I'll have a field day. But for now, runs of 25, 50 and 100, I'm constrained to digital printing opposed to offset. It's very fun for me to be able to find work arounds, crafty ways get similar effects for a viewer, be able to show the level of thought and detail, without having the luxury infinite possibilities. To name a few, made my last one on newsprint, but ended up printing out a tabloid sized print to fold up into the centerfold, along with a cover page that was slightly over sized, and hand stitched to the rest of the book. Anyway, I could keep going on and on. Thanks for this video
Really appreciate your thoughts here - I’ve been considering how some of my future projects will look/function and taking size into account has been a huge factor. I love big prints, and I love details, but big books are often much harder to enjoy or frequent. I may consider some sort of envelope w/ prints type of experience for some of my work vs a massive hardcover. 🤷🏻♂️ food for thought
Plenty of photographers have sold a box of prints versus a bound book and there’s definitely nothing wrong with that at all. All about the intended experience.
I could not figure out who the print place is for the Rabbit book. I’m finding difficulty printing BW photo book as I have tried some online publishers and the photos had a green tint to them.
Matt, what are your thoughts about words with photo books? I kind of treat my Instagram like a story book and love that in Insta people can just look at all the square thumbnails and get an overview of my work, but then can jump into each one where I tell a little story or feeling about the image as well. Been thinking of doing a book about my recent Lomo Purple work, but wonder what people think about adding words with the images...

@@mattdayphoto Awesome, looking forward to it!
I literally started to get photo books because of you so, thank you Matt!(:
You have no idea how happy I am to hear that. Never been about selling books, just want people to experience photography this way! So good.
Love this new style of videos Matt
Great to see I'm not the only one who likes manageable size and soft covers. Knit club looks amazing.

Love this idea, that sounds like such a fun experience to view that one. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this as well!
Love!
so many great examples and ideas for inspiration
thank you
This is not about what makes a great photobook. This is about my favorite photobooks.

Wishing you a happy new year!

Do you have a list of favorite photo books anywhere that I can refer to?
Someone's been watching Alec Soth's You Tube channel :)
