It’s pretty obvious despite how it all may play out that the owner, club and manager are having a crack. Talking about the past won’t help or solve anything now. Getting better, which is happening, winning cups, which Spurs are in the hunt for… building academy prospects, which is happening… no one could say with Ange ‘football doesn’t come first’

That one really hurt, didn't it. A friend who was visiting the UK at the time brought back a cup final programme for me and was disappointed at my lack on enthusiasm for her (well intended) gesture.
It wasn't just the result, but the manner of it, from a kick that was missing the goal taking a deflection off our heroic captain's leg and winding in the one tiny bit of goal the keeper couldn't get to (like the 2002 Ronaldinho free kick - as in 1970 and 1982, England was the only team the Brazilians were worried about).

Jose had lost the dressing room months before he was sacked. People forget the godawful football we were playing. We had lost to a 3-0 Dinamo Zagreb team in the Conference League whose manager was in jail. We were constantly playing 80 minutes of defending in a low block and 10+ minutes of chasing the game. It was terrible to watch and the results were not there. Conte gave up on us in his second season, albeit amidst personal turmoil due to deaths of two people very close to him and a serious illness. Personally, I want us to play Ange’s way and build our team over time to have the capability to WIN playing Ange ball. It takes time, we’ve come further than our current results show. Have faith!

The talksport bit is a snapshot of the mindset many supporters hold. They look too much through the prism of what others are saying about them. It seems to create this short term/shortcut mentality in order to get a trophy. Never mind that it will do the opposite and set any kind of sustainable success further away. Those supporters of other clubs will still look and laugh at spurs lack of trophies even if spurs win one. O'Hara reckons Ange is under pressure? Well duh!! Of course he is, but his job is far from 'on the line'. Levy has a Manager that doesn't demand hundred million Euro players and he's got a young squad that can match it with the best and it's a great unique attacking style to watch. Ange aint leaving soon unless they have a really horrible run of losses, which I can't see happening.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

Glenn Hoddle is quite right that "to do is to dare" doesn't mean much, if anything, but the actual Spurs motto is "To Dare Is To Do" (Audeat Est Facere) and that makes a lot more sense. Of course Hoddle once said that disabled people were receiving karma for the sins of their past lives, so he's not exactly the most reliable authority on anything other than playing football.

Hoddle actually said he was Christian and believed in reincarnation when asked a typical & unrelated to football “trap” question by the media in an interview. The unscrupulous reporter then put the interview out 5 months later misconstruing what Glenn alluded to totally. Glenn asked the FA to put a statement out backing him, but the gutless FA wouldn’t do so, hence he resigned thereafter sayjng if you can’t back your manager off the field he wouldn’t carry the job further. It always amazes how the press are believed and facts are discounted in these matters. Hoddle pioneered the 3 man centre half & wing back formation in the 90s & took England on a great World Cup run in 98 & em we were robbed in a quarter final despite a perfectly good golden goal with ten men against the argies. Then we were favourites for the euros when this debacle happened. Glenn also was a once in a generation talent, revered around the world by the footballing greats but wasted again by the FA in an era preoccupied by crunch tackling and work rate that got England nowhere. Even Platini stated that if Glenn was French he’d of gained 150 caps & they’d of built the whole team around him . The FA should hold their heads in shame on how they disgracefully wasted the greatest talent on the pitch and off of it.

    • @jamesrowe3606
      @jamesrowe3606 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@davidbrooks187 You can gaslight all you like, but this is Hoddle's verbatim quote (to The Times):
“You and I have been physically given two hands and two legs and half-decent brains. Some people have not been born like that for a reason. The karma is working from another lifetime. I have nothing to hide about that. It is not only people with disabilities. What you sow, you have to reap. You have to look at things that happened in your life and ask why. It comes around.”
There's no ambiguity about that, so try your bullshit on someone else mate.

Hoddle was a great player he did actually manage the club too and didn't do as well as others. It's all well and good saying this and that, but it's all talk. There are clubs that have had more money and then Chelsea and Man City came in with unlimited backers. They need to be smart like they were with Poch but fully back it and keep it going and then you can build a team that can really go all the way and sustain. But it's far from easy and you have to do it the right way and in a sustainable manner.

My thoughts are league form is critical because it makes you consistent week in week out. You can fluke cup trophies, but you cannot fluke a league title. And by winning a league title, if you can build on from there and challenge year in year out, you put yourself in a better position to win more cups automatically.
That said, the current top of the league is miles ahead of us. No coach can bridge the gap between Salah/Saka vs Brennan Johnson. Or Rice/Rodri vs Bissouma. At this level, you need the best in the business to take games by the scruff of the neck when you aren't playing well to secure a win. Until we sign players that are truly world class, we cannot get better than 4th as things stand.
We have a lot of potential in our young squad, but are they really going to reach their peak with no world class players training with them daily? Son, you could argue is our best player, but with his age he is no longer in the discussion to be the top LW in the world.

Well winning trophies stays in history --- you won't win the league unless you draw the best players in the world ..... while we get the 2nd best it will never be enough. Get in the champions league you get better players money will not get you a title of the EPL a team of champions will we need to run for the cups and qualify and then slowly get the players we need. BTW we didnt play our best players either in the cup and really do not think we went all out of the cup.

Not entirely true, as Brazil 50, Hungary 54, Holland 74 and Brazil 82 are still recognised as being the best teams in those World Cups. And the Hoddle team of the early 80s is still recognised as the best team of the time, despite not winning the league. (yes, we underperformed, as even the double winning side did in retrospect - should've won more league titles).

Everytime a Spurs player gets too good, they're purchased by Real Madrid, Manchester United (we were lucky to hold on to Kane but lost everyone else that was world class). If Dele maintained his trajectory, there is NO WAY he'd still be at Spurs. The challenge to compete with the so called big 6 is bigger of Spurs than the others as we're a feeder club - this needs to change.

Winning a trophy is an all-or-nothing situation: Pocchetino 'went for Cups', got very close on multiple times and won none. But he also qualified regularly for Champions League via the league. That's what Pocchetino is saying: 'I'm setting out to outperform Pocchetino'. You don't forget the League when you are nowhere near lifting a Cup - you keep your options open until you actually have real trade-offs to make. There's none of these mouthing-off fans who would not call for Postecoglou to be sacked if he finished 15th in the League, lost the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool, lost the Europa League semi-final to Man Utd and got knocked out in the 6th round of the FA Cup by Arsenal. They wouldn't call for him to be sacked if he finished 4th-6th and lost those Cups in the way previously described.
If the fans want to keep players like Romero, Van de Ven, Vicario, Porro, Kulusevski etc, the very worst outcome in a season must be qualifying for the Europa League. Very worst.
The fans should be careful what they wish for. Just remember: 17th and Carabao Cup is Europa Conference League football next season. It may very well not be good enough to keep the best players at the club. 17th and Europa League win is a totally different proposition.
I'm all for winning the Carabao Cup, but not as a prelude to entry into the Europa Conference League. It should be a prelude to winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League.
