- This signature Ed Sheeran guitar is made of HPL (High Pressure Laminate) and can be tricky to reglue/repair. Luckily this was on the easier side.

Hey Beau, I used to be a finish carpenter for 30yrs, That high pressure laminate is as you said used for flooring, Formica countertops. Anyway you can glue that back with a product called PL200(construction adhesive). It a lot cheaper than that 3m CA glue but it would be a permanent adhesion. Thanks👍👍🎸🎼🎹👨🏻🦯
Hi- thanks for the info. The PL200 looks like caulking/liquid nails. If it could be applied neatly it would work well.
I repaired a similar Martin a similar way. It's wild to me that they make countertop guitars. The glue boost is a great concealer.
Yep and yep! :) thanks for watching
Another awesome video Beau. The HPL Martins can be tough but you made it look like a breeze. And bonus, your playing is beautiful! Have a great weekend!
Thanks David 😊
Hey fella. I was going to ask who was noodling on the strings as it was very peaceful whilst watching you work. All was revealed to those who wait.
Great work you lovely human.
Thanks Man! ❤️ and ditto to you old friend!
I'm pretty sure you could use acetone or ca solvent on that finish without damaging it. I remember regluing a bridge on a similar Martin but with a composite top as well. Martin recommended that same adhesive. I masked the perimeter of the bridge but still had to do a bit of clean-up and that's what I used. It's not the nc finish they use on their real guitars, it's some kind of a bulletproof cross-linked coating.
Yar- it ain’t nitro!
I had to work on an Enya ukulele with HPL back and sides. I got a drip of super glue on the side. Granted it was small. I tried some acetone on a Q-Tip. It removed the drip completely, but didn't seem to effect the finish on the HPL.
@@edwardpetersen4309 good to know
I always believed that Martin Guitars were all solid wood!
Nice that it has a solid spruce top!
Nice if they had a sticker on the guitar mentioning the material of the top, back and sides!
I’m not sure when they started using materials other than wood. Some have tops made of this, some even have the spruce grain printed on them!
totally great save on that finish with the drips
Thanks :)
So glad to see your videos back, and the production quality is superior! Hope I never have to work on a laminate guitar, but I have found HDPE (high density polyethylene) to be really useful for building assembly and glue up fixtures, precisely because wood glue won't bond to it. Surprised to see that shellac will bond with the laminate, but the repair looks great, and as for those shiny spots , ONLY you or another luthier will ever notice them. Used to be a compulsion of mine, to point out the little flaws in my finish carpentry to the client, things that bugged me and that they would NEVER see;)
Thanks John. Ps/ I could replicate that Pebbly finish but it would take a spluttery airbrush or spray gun.
@@BeauHannamGuitars I don't doubt that for a second, but definitely not worth the effort. My old carpentry mentor had what he called the 17 foot rule...you work to a different standard 17 feet in the air than you do at eye level at the front door;)
What the heck was Martin thinking? Those sides and back remind me of the vinyl top on a '67 Ford Falcon I used to own, god I miss that car!
Hahah- they build Em good back in 67! Martin now have a binding problem.
Thanks, fascinating insight into Luthier repair challenges, printed wood grain back and sides….different, bet it becomes more common. Happy New year and all the best.
Thanks Mike. My pleasure 😇
Beau, thanks for the goldmine of information, so well presented. I’m looking forward to the release of your next album. -Sam
Thanks- my pleasure
The playing is really nice! 🙌👍🙏
Thanks Paul. I just improvised
Nice work and playing!
Thanks
Well done after the CA gluing it looks awful but the final result is really wonderful
Hahahha- never let a customer see a guitar half built/repaired as it usually looks a total mess until it isn’t. The only thing that matters is the end :)
Great job, Beau!
Thanks :)
That was freakin Awesome !
Thanks Peter :)
Get that superglue in a spray bottle! Guaranteed to make that awful finish and ruin the next thing you make when you mistake it for water 😂
Hahahhahah
Good show mate....
Thanks Alan :)
Ed Sheeran.
It took a minute,, yes-yes he got a lot of notice/attention Re: a copyright thing a while ago.
Yep- not sure if he won or not
NOT THE LEMON OIL! lol the fretboard in also a synthetic material (RIchlite) like the body and isn't fibrous.
Argh! Thats ok- I only used a little and wiped it straight off. I forgot to mention the fingerboard material- I hate that stuff.
@@BeauHannamGuitars I don’t hate it so bad on my little Martin. No shrinkage from not hydrating it. The old models used real wood fingerboards and bridges. I swear they’re build as a boat/busking guitar
@@farrellsprops8065 the ones I’ve seen I didn’t like the “grain” of the richlite. But being less prone to humidity is good
@@BeauHannamGuitars the old ones tend to resell for more because of the better materials. It’s crazy how Ed Sheeran and a few artists made these small bodied guitars go crazy. I’m in the process of putting an or baggs into my little Martin. The onboard Fishman Isys seems to struggle with capturing the bass sometimes and it crackles too. I still love it though
When I first saw this I pictured a neck break between the 1st and 3rd fret 🤣😂
Hahahah
And then they bring out the D19 ,,,
Argh
Dude! Use epoxy! Alcohol Cleanup while still wet! Save yourself some trouble.
Like I said, either works.
I'm not a big fan of Martin guitars and the last thing the world needs is more fake wood. Gibson are also over priced rubish. It's getting very hard to find a guitar that's worth the price tag.
I think every guitar brand has good and bad.
