Aloha Melissa! I would’ve done the same thing, better to be safe than sorry. I didn’t even know about the storm because I’ve been busy with family that have been visiting from out of town. This hurricane has caused so much damage, hoping you and your family are safe 🙏🏼
Great job and so glad Miami area didn’t get hit too bad. I am in Sarasota and the wind was a monster. My hanging orchids are on a wooden fence and did well but I moved all the potted ones on the covered part of the lanai which is pretty well protected from the wind👍😍
Hi Melissa, good job protecting your orchids during a storm. I used to do that but my collection because too big and it was overwhelming. Now what I do, the orchids I value the most come inside the other I put them on the floor against the wall under my covered patio where no direct wind hits them. Orchids are hardier than I initially thought…also keep an eye out for hitchhikers inside your house. I once brought a vanda in that had a tree frog and I didn’t realize it until I heard it sing and hopping around my house. Luckily my husband and saved me haha..on the bright side, this is an opportunity to reorganize the orchids and start with a clean slate lol.
Yes, the movement made me reconfigure everything and also realize that I need to slow down collecting. I’ll try. The goal was to bring in the most special but little by little I brought them all. 🤣
Thank you for sharing the video, I also brought in all of my orchids (a much smaller collection) and glad I did since the winds were wicked! Today I’m taking them back out and watering them. Hope all is well with you and your family. 😊
Hi Melisa this is a lot of love involved ❤️🌱🌱I’ve been through this several time ; but this time one of my four pergolas turned 🥲thank you for sharing 😍🌱🌱🌱
Melissa Before I moved anything indoors I treated everything with Physan and took pictures of each section of plants; it made putting them back in their spot easier. I hung vandas into the garage on the garage door rails. My wooden shelves were placed on top of overturned recycle bins then the terracotta pots went on the shelves. All remaining terra cotta pots went on shelving on ladder rungs. We have that awful plastic coated shelving that came in handy for my plastic hanging/neti pots. Target purchase (two lightweight battery operated fans) and a 36" ceiling fan that I left on to circulate air. Any species or special plants went in our guest bathroom after I turned the steam shower on and the door remained shut! This summer we installed tension rods under the flat overhang of our screened patio where my vandas and hanging pots will be safe. It gave me a chance to take inventory of what I had when the hurricane and tropical storm winds were over. Nothing you do to prepare is ever a waste. Everything for your hobby is a learning situation. Best of luck.
I live over in the Clearwater area on the west side of Florida which got hammered! We have a utility shed in the back yard that is pretty solid so the orchids went in there and came out this morning as soon as the wind calmed. The other orchids I have out front went into the garage, with the vandas hanging up on nails attached to shelves. All are back outside today thankfully. Gotta love Florida…. At least most of the time!
You are tripping me out. 😂😂😂 Your facial expressions towards the end was priceless. I’m so glad we dodged it. I pray for those in upstate Florida who lost their homes. It’s always so sad to hear the aftermath. Considering the size of this beast, it could have done way more damage. Now get yourself some cats so you can get rid of all the critters you brought into the house inside the pots. lol. Note to self, I need. Dendrobium babana royal.
HI Melissa! Glad all is well for you. It was a good practice run for the next one. I did bring in some of my Catts in but not all of the orchids I have summering outside. They have been getting a lot of rain lately and they need to dry out. Thank you for sharing your experience. I know it is draining on the nerves. Take care!
Hi Melissa, I live in Frankfort, Kentucky and I'm about 12 and a half hours drive to FL; however, today (9/27), we had 45-60 MPH winds and two inches of rain today resulting from Helene. I have about 50 orchids, but I grow them all indoors. The only orchids that I have outside in the warmer months are 5 vandas and a Stanhopia. I ended up brings them indoors because the vandas (3 are spiking right now) were blown off the tree branches. My Stanhopia has a spike that is about to open so yes it came inside. I purchased a cheap metal garment rack, and it holds all my vandas and Stanhopia for the colder months. I'm glad to see you all made it through the storm without a lot of damage.
Hi Melissa, the important thing is that you and your family are OK. Material things are replaceable. Of course we worry about our babies and try to protect them as much as possible. For the vandas I bought one of those stands that they use at the cleaners that have wheels and hang them there and bring it inside. It works pretty good. It's an idea. Prayers for all the affected people.
Glad you and your family is ok. My brother lives on the gulf and he is doing a lot of cleaning but is ok too. Hope this is the last for the season. I’m is Calif. and the weather is great here. Sorry to brag!
Here in Brisbane Qld we get summer storms but nothing like hurricanes. I cover my greenhouse with a clear sunsafe tarpaulin with ropes that tie to thick spikes. Maybe you could buy tarpaulins to tie up around your pergola to protect against hurricanes? Tarps are pretty sturdy against wild winds.
Keep safe Melissa by now I guess it has passed your way. I’m in Atlanta and will be experiencing the effects of the storm here for the first time in Atlanta. I’m here visiting. Hope your plants are okay.
hey Melissa, good thing it went ok. Snap on the washing machine. I have a Samsung too. I was told it should be reliable. I wonder if yours makes a little song after each wash is finished too. Crazy amount of orchids you have but I have mentioned that before. Here I am making one last order for a couple new ones but I made the hard decision to throw out my biggest cymbidium. Cleared up a lot of space. Had to be done. Congrats on the Sea Breeze, you keep saying its easy but mine always stagnates for 4 months this time of year. It's literally not growing, then should start again in december but it just seems unhappy most of the time. Mites didn't help. I think the Sea Breeze in particular might be one of those fussy ones that prefers sun light. I wonder if your phals have started spiking yet? I am so surprised this year it is going like clockwork but they are all ridiculously early this year. Like last year it took most till Feb to spike but they are so much stronger this year I've got the first couple starting off the next season already in september now which is amazing. You will see, it takes phals a year or even 2 to properly adapt to your seasons and then it should go like clockwork at roughly the same intervals every year. But yeah my phals have relly inspired me again. I will remind you again, now that you need to rearrange, sort orchids by their health if you can. I mainly judge this by the roots. If the roots are blemish free with active root growth then they are in top condition. Any not growing roots could just be seasonal root growers but it can also be a sign it isn't as happy (as in the case of my sea breeze). Over the year I am able to keep an eye on things better by grouping orchids that have not grown new roots in a long time and moving others around that do grow new roots. Have a good week.
Thanks Tom! Yes all my appliances seems to play music when they’re done working lol. Even the fridge when we need to change the filter. Hehe. My sea Breeze crazy 🤪 roots I’ll show her next time. Too bad about your cymbidium. I’m definitely separating the “sickly”. Thanks for the great advice.
It was a hurricane drill better safe the sorry now you get to look at them and rearrange and know how to prepare for next time or if we get cold weather.🩷

Thank you so much. My family was very annoyed having so many plants inside the house lol

Right!! It’s so pretty. 😘 We got very lucky here in our part of town. Praying for those that had so much damage. 😢

Yes, it was super draining, but I felt like I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I left them all out there.
Good luck, hope all turns out well
Thank you! We faired very well in Miami. I hope others can rebuild and recover quickly. 🙏🏻
lotsa work, but its good practice and a good way to size up your collection! glad you all fared well...
Yes, thanks. It’s sad to hear about the nurseries that had so much damage.
With or without makeup you are beautiful 😊😊 keep safe Melissa and your family 😊
Thank you so much, you are too kind!

That’s what I did - a rolling garment rack. It was perfect. Glad you’re ok

Thank you Madga! I’m thankful that we are all fine. I bought from Target a rolling clothing rack and it fit most of the vandas.
Glad you and your family is ok. My brother lives on the gulf and he is doing a lot of cleaning but is ok too. Hope this is the last for the season. I’m is Calif. and the weather is great here. Sorry to brag!
Ooo I heard about your great weather. Thanks for watching
Now you realize that you have too many Orchid !
Thanks for sharing your beautiful Orchid ❤
@@Lili-wz8eg never!! Hahah you never have too many!! 😜

I've always wondered what it was like in Florida with people that have orchids outside. Hooefully the afternath wasn't too bad.
Not this time for me but I heard of many orchid nurseries that are having a tough time. 😢
Keep safe Melissa by now I guess it has passed your way.

Don't worry about makeup. I think you look most beautiful with none!
Oh thank you! You are too kind.
Oh dear. I would have started by getting those vandas away from your glass window - yikes. 😮
Yes u ended up doing that. Thank you
Wow! So much work! At least you’re all fine. 🩷
Yes we are

I’m glad you’re ok. I heard about horrible damage from people in Sarasota.
Yes, the Keys and St. Armand Circle got devastated 😫
