I got my first cattleyas as bag babies from Lowes last year. They might be the perfect orchid to try outside here in Connecticut during the summer. I was thinking some kind of hanging plastic basket on a tree branch. I think the highest temperature limit for phals is around 85°F.

Since all the orchids are going bad in that pot, not just 1 or 2, my immediate thought is there is something in that clay they all don’t like. Maybe the clay is too alkaline. Maybe it’s just that one pot, even tho it looks like other pots that do fine. I’ve had that happen before with pots brought over from Asia- certain pots that orchids refuse to like. finally had to give up on a pretty pot.

What a fantastic splash of colorful blooms to come. So excited for you that the vandas are coming into bud and bloom. I look every morning and then mid-day to assess which plants are doing well or receiving too much sun. I've moved a few to get them under shade so they can avoid that sunburn.

Melissa, I am amazed how well you do with your cattleyas in pots! I live in SW Florida and grow my orchids outside. I have to mount my cattleyas or put them in baskets with very loose medium if no, the roots rot with all the rain we get in summer. So, I am jealous😉😍

That Olive Palmer is a stunner! I can see a chandelier in my future, all Olive Palmer! By the way the Dick Smith cross also has produced a darker bloom, "Dark Beauty". "Paradise" is the one that is lighter. I had to have them both!

I had the same bad luck But I put my Phalaenopsis on a moss pole. They have done the same as yours. I am thinking we should wait until new root growth and then they would attach and not go down hill.

In 2023 you were into large Cattleyas and by 2024 your obsession became novelty Phals. Who knows what it will be in 2025.

Hi Melissa, I was wondering about spraying the phals with the fine mist of water. Are you not worried about crown rot or is it so hot there that the water just evaporates?

I like those pots and the plants are beautiful! I've only had one Phal not like being repotted in bloom. I repot most my phals after I get them home mostly to check roots and get them in the pots I use. Fun video! Thank you!

Melissa, when do you classify an orchid as a rescue? I thought a rescue was an orchid that wasn’t doing, probably with bad roots/ no roots.
