Ronnie O'Sullivan | Counter Attacks | 2018 Players Championship Final

  • After a funny comment from Neal Foulds, O'Sullivan begins the steals in the final against Shaun Murphy.
    _______________________________
    A free ball is called when after a foul, the cue ball is snookered. The cue ball is snookered when each red (or whichever the ball on is) is totally or partially blocked by colours (balls not on). The pink partially blocks all reds in the video, so the cue ball is snookered by definition. As happened after a foul by Murphy, O'Sullivan was awarded a free ball.
    The confusion for O'Sullivan is that some reds behind the pack are blocked by other reds. In that case, you could imagine all the other reds disappear: you only have the cue ball, the colours and the red in question. If you can hit both sides of that red, you're not snookered. But if you can't (e.g. you can hit it full ball, but a colour prevents you from cutting its left side), and the same goes for every red, then you're snookered.
    Remember, according to the official definition, 'Snookered' implies partially or totally blocked, not just totally blocked as we usually consider it. So you could be snookered even if you can hit part of the ball on, regardless of whether it is a free ball situation or not.

    Cesar Muroya created a unique editing technique to extract the essence of the game without losing the drama involved. Contextual information is also an innovation appreciated by viewers.
    This format is not intended to substitute the full version but rather to make snooker more accessible to new fans. The fluency and atmosphere of the game stay in a shorter length video, allowing even experienced fans to enjoy snooker at any time.

    Free Ball Explained-
    Murphy fouled by miss. All reds were snookered by the pink.
    Ronnie cannot be snookered after Murphy’s foul miss.
    To rectify, an extra or free “red” ball is declared using the blue as a clear shot on a “red”
    Ronnie was actually thinking he was not snookered and this would be to his disadvantage as he’d have to play on the red pack instead of the open blue “extra red”

    2:14 - What an underrated shot. Ronnie's dislodgings are rare, subtle and beautifully open things up for big clearances. They're the opposite of the Judd Trump mentality.

    Can someone explain the free ball rule

  • @shangclockmania6168
    @shangclockmania6168 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've got a question concerning a free ball situation. Since you're not allowed to use that colour to snooker your opponent: if you try to pot it full force and that colour hitting the jaws ends up rolling up and down the table and stop right in front of the cue ball, would that count as a foul? does the rule book stick to the factual outcome of that shot/situation or would the referee rather not give a foul because it was played in a serious and sportsmanship way?

    • @CesarMuroya
      @CesarMuroya  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, intentional or not, it would be a foul.
      Like here, John Higgins vs Wu Yize: th-cam.com/video/9xQfjvyJlNY/w-d-xo.html

    • @shangclockmania6168
      @shangclockmania6168 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CesarMuroya Thank you very much. I just watched it. What an unfortunate silly situation : D Poor Wu. What I like especially is that it was the opposite of slamming the colour into the jaws, but since you knew exactly what I was talking about you could quickly show me a clip with a different (slow) shot but same outcome. I think it's a good rule. I mean, those guys are so good, they (at some times) work with the jaws when snookered, even calculating a fluke-like bounce off the jaws or off other balls. They might not continue the break, as in your link, but they then would be in an advanced position which in snooker can be equally as bad for the opponent. Your link is a perfect example. Just imagine, all hypothetically, pink and the cue ball being 7 and 10 inches away from the left side pocket, the red being blocked by the blue (for the side pocket on the right). Though very unlikely, if a very good player played that pink intentionally and gets the snooker 3 inches next to the side pocket, I don't know if I wouldn't pull a Ronnie (conceding the match against Hendry) :D :D :D And before I forget: your videos man, a treasure for every snooker fan. Great quality, nice storylines/intros/outros added, very well edited, with subtitles,... A pleasure to watch.

    I have a clarifying question: for a player to be given a free ball, does that mean that not all the reds are "seen" by the player? Is that what they are discussing in the first minute of the video? Thanks!

    • @CesarMuroya
      @CesarMuroya  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A free ball is given when after a foul the cue ball is snookered; and it is snookered when each red (or whichever the ball on is) is partially blocked by colour balls (balls not on). In the video, the pink partially blocks each red, thus the cue-ball is snookered by definition.

  • @dominikdama6010
    @dominikdama6010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What is the basis for deciding whether it is a free ball or not? Could someone explain this? Thanks

    • @CesarMuroya
      @CesarMuroya  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The basis is simple: it's a free ball when snookered after a foul. The tricky thing is the concept of snookered: when colours block each ball on, totally or partially.
      We usually think that snookered implies totally blocked and thus you can't hit any ball on, but that's incorrect.
      In the video, the pink partially blocks each red, therefore the cue-ball is snookered.; it's snookered after a foul by Murphy.

      the free ball was given when O Sullivan coudnt hit both edges of any red, he contested that he could hit the left edge but the ref said the pink obstructed, ronnie didnt think so. 0:22 for the commentators explanation

      If you can’t see both sides of a ball on, it is a free ball. Note: a ball on can’t be obscured by another ball on (eg. a red can’t be used to justify not seeing both sides of another red).
