This was an absolutely beautiful and much simpler set up than I was Taught. I love campers. The key to shorter trailers is that they come around fast. Therefore, turning the steering wheel a little to get the trailer started, then turning back the other way to control it. May have to pull forward a few times to stay in control of the trailer swing. The shorter the trailer is, the faster the trailer swings. I hope this helps at least a little. I wish you the best!
Don't watch your trl watch your trl tires that is your pivot point, setup is the most important part, don't cut yourself short use as much space as you need to setup and get out and look as many times as you need not just to look at clearance look at the angle of trk and trl compared to where your backing into and remember if your using a spotter trust but verify if you hit something they aren't going to pay your deductible.
@chrisstockwell9235 great advice. Watching the tires is also important, but watching everything is important, especially when there is a big portion of the trailer beyond the tires. I have a travel trailer myself. Different from a tractor trailer but similar. Please stay safe!
Thanks for your question. The best advice I have on any maneuver is to look at what you are working with and set up accordingly. I may not be fully understanding your question, but setting up accordingly to your space is key. Thanks, and please stay safe.
☂️Thank you for this excellent video. Would you be willing to do another 45 degree one? Same setup but tighter with typical empty trailers on the other right hand side. Because lot of times it feels like you might hit the other side because its so tight. This video doesn't show if it was tighter on the other side. So if you can demonstrate and explain the proper setup like this one backing between trailers. Also I had one small truck like that before but lost the trailer they can be useful.
Hello Keith, thanks for your comments and I truly wish you well at trucking school as well as your trucking career. Feel free to contact me if need be. I'll help you as much as I can.
Hi Jrock! Great question. On all backing opportunities, it's best to look at everything first to determine what to do next. If there's not much room in front of the space you're backing then a couple of options are: Do a 90 degree back or maybe slide the tandems all the way forward (but be mindful of the tail swing). Once the trailer is in the space and you need to pull up, you will have plenty extra room then. Thanks for the question and please stay safe.
That's okay, but the hard turn to the left is easier if you go all the way back to 12 o'clock instead of 1:30. The maneuver sets you up for success this way without having to pull up the additional 8 feet. Sometimes, you don't have that space available, so it's better to teach the 12-3-12 method.
Hi Richard and thanks for your comment and input. I do agree that it all depends on the situation at hand. The way I'm showing this in the video never failed fo me. A driver must survey the area and setup accordingly. Thanks and please continue to stay safe.
Great question. The three oklock starts when your shoulder is in line with the edge of the trailer by the driver side mirror. This is the first turn of the set up.
Lets say my tandems are at the CA mark when I am in a day cab. I DRIVE 6.5 lanes ahead until I cut the wheel hard right and back up to do alley docking. How many lanes should I drive ahead until I cut the wheel hard right and back up when I am in a sleeper cab?
Hi Jeahwang, I'm not sure if this helps but from my experience, it was always easier to have the tandems all the way to the rear on a 90 to not have the tail swing. It all depends on the space you have to work with to determine the angle you want to use.

What if you don't have the room to pull up straight from 3 oclock???
Plan your work, then work your plan. Before any maneuver, it's a great idea to figure out the best and safest way to set up. Look at the space and items around you and set up accordingly. Get out and look is very important. If you don't have the space for the 3 o'clock , then use a different set up. Thanks and I wish you the best.
You turned the wheels to the left not the right at the beginning of your backing.
Hi Ronald, thanks for your comment. What I said is correct. I moved the truck to the left because when you turn to the right, thats what happens. Feel free to speak via phone with me so we can talk if you like. I thank you and I wish you the best. If you want to talk about it then email me at tyoung.18wms@gmail.com. please stay safe.
He kept saying turn to the right until he did his goal then it was turn to left , confused me too 🙃
Still a good vid
@@18WMS no problem thanks
Excellent Presentation sir we’ll done ✅
Thanks Greg and thanks for your service!
Thanks for your videos , they very easy to follow and definitely helped me with upgrading to my truck for my company
Mike, you are very welcome! Thanks for your comment and everything. I wish you the best.
Well I failed on my backing, I totally panicked and blew it , I'm hoping they let me retest , I did pass everything else tho
i was doing parallel parking and i was told to do a 45 degree backing i had no idea what that met or how would i do that with a parallel parking
Hi Valentin, 45 and parallel require different set ups. What did you end up doing?
It jackknife but I had to do one pull up
@@valentinsanchez960 I hope it didn't jack to the point of damage and I'm glad you are done with that situation.
Works everytime!!
I'm happy to hear that! Thank you and I wish you the best.
Bubba shower us something similar very good instructor
I agree! Thanks for your comment.
What indicates that you should then turn your wheel all the way to the left?
Thanks for your question. In this example, once you bust that 3 o'clock- is the indication.
@@18WMSI’m sorry, to clarify, I meant after the step where you turn all the way right and then counter steer left. What are you looking for to know your right turn is done?
@moneycf no worries, we go into the fine detail via video. I offer educational sessions if you're interested. You can email me at tyoung.18wms@gmail.com or set up a session with this link. Thanks. maps.app.goo.gl/nQ2E6MzRUcRthfbV7
@@moneycf once your tractor is pointed at the 3 oclock position, immediately crank it back to 12, until your tractor is straight, with your wheels straight, you proceed back, keeping your wheel straight, the trailer will begin to turn, while your tractor wheels are kept straight..
@craigslistrro709 that's another option. You will have to pull up more depending on the available space.
Thank you very helpful!!
You are very welcome, and I wish you the best!!
Thank you for sharing.

What about 90 degree backing?
Hi Jeahwang,
I hope you are doing well and thank you for your comment. I plan on doing a video on the 90 degree soon. The set up and execution is different but interesting depending on the space. Have a safe day.
I need help on blind side backing
Blind side backing is very risky depending on the equipment and area. I can help you with it, though. Please inbox me at tyoung.18wms@gmail.com
Thanks, and I wish you the best.
@@18WMS Do truckers avoid blind side backing if they can help it?
Yes, unless they have a spotter. Even then, backing from the driver side is most likely a safer way. I hope this helps. Please stay safe!
Thanks
You're welcome!

I'm wishing you a great experience in trucking. Do what is safe for you everytime. Thanks.
Oh you got a sub my friend!! 😊
Excellent!! Thank you.
There's more easier way, doesn't mean you are wrong brother. Experience, much easier
No worries. I said that this is one way to do it. It really boils down to the space available to work with. Thanks for your comment, and I wish you the best.
These toy trucks are the most actual training you will get from TRANS AM 😂🤣🤣🤣
That's cool, but 18WMS is not affiliated with any trucking company. Have a great day.
on your counter top you have enough room for a b29. Real life dosen't work that way
I didn't use that much space, though. My scenario works in real life fyi.

Man u can't teach someone how to back up a 18 wheeler with toys
We all have our opinions. Thank you for yours. Teaching probably took and takes place in school. I am helping others however I can. I hope you have a great day!
Actually it helped a whole lot. Some people learn different ways which is fine. But him explaining certain things made things click because i was doing it wrong. i hope you find what works for u
