Everyone was freaking out about BlackPink. Tried to understand but never really did. Then I discovered Mamamoo and I absolutely don't get it that they are not huge. Girls absolutely rocking it, vocals on top, rapper writes her own raps and they actually have lyrics that make sense. Their stages always look like they really want to be there, it's entertaining even though they might not be the strongest dancers compared to others. They deserve so much better.

I see Nikita explained the basics of the singing competition tv show Immortal Songs where MMM performed Delilah. The old dude catching flies was the featured guest on that episode and the competitors performed their arrangements of his old hit songs. Delilah was originally a hit for Tom Jones back in the 60's, old dude did the Korean hit version, and Mamamoo did their own radical rearrangement including a new rap verse written by Moonbyul just for this performance. In the original version a guy sings it to his cheating girlfriend, who he has just stabbed with a knife, asking her to forgive him before the cops show up and haul him away. Mamamoo turned it into a lesbian passion play without changing the gender in the lyrics (hard to do since it's called Delilah lol) and without batting an eye or a trace of irony. The old dude was slack jawed throughout the performance because he couldn't wrap his head around the gender & sexuality switch up. When they talked with him after MMM performed he expressed his disapproval by saying he never thought Delilah would be done by a girl group and went on to make fun of Mamamoo's name. At this time Mamamoo were still rookies and weren't yet a household name in Korea.
Moo means radish in Korean, the fandom name is moomoo, and the official light stick is shaped like a daikon radish. Moomoos welcome new fans by saying Welcome to the radish field! and new moomoos are referred to as Baby Radishes. So I like your interpretation of the name Mamamoo - basically Queen Radish or the Radish Majesty. 🤣 You'll hear a silly PR Dept version of why they're called Mamamoo but the real story is that Mamamoo is a nonsense word that was the original title of a song written for Quincy Jones by their label's co-CEO, a famous songwriter named Kim Dohoon. When the girls were trainees and didn't yet have a name for their group Quincy came to Seoul for a concert and they performed it for him. He decided not to use the song so Kim Dohoon partially rewrote the song, retitled it Mr Ambiguous and gave it to the girls as their debut single and the original song title became the name of the group.

This is a reply before i hear your reaction. Mamamoo - I have never heard the mama as being 'royalty' type of thing. However, we do refer to these women as vocal queens. :)
If you watch kdrama mostly historical, they always refer or call the queen mama, but I never seen mamamoo make a reference about it
They never refer that as a queen but I heard somewhere they say it becouse it sounds funny and about the radish not a queen

I think you didn't know some background of this song, and i hope i can fill you in. 1. Delilah is a Tom Jones song. They lyrics are written from a mans perspective, but here it was sung by women. 2. this song was made famous in korea by the man whos face they kept focusing on (and you were laughing at). 3. this show 'Immortal Songs 2' is a show where old famous songs are reimagined. 4. Glad you saw the end note, many reactors miss it. 5. Mamamoo did 14 songs at 'immortal songs 2' and they are all top tier.
Enjoyed your reaction. Recommend you watch them singing immortal songs medley. It is youtube safe. It is from one of their concerts. It is a bunch of the songs they did at the TV show mashed together. It was in the middle of a 3-4 hour long concert, and they still delivered vocal perfection.

Officially, the group's name signifies the babbling of a baby, because they aim to make music that would be familiar to people around the world, like the word "mama" that babies would commonly first learn and speak of. Originally, due to the origin of "MAMAMOO" being a form of scat singing, the name had no meaning at first, so it had to be made up into what it currently is now.
Their name was actually the original name of their debut song, and it was suppose to be given to Quincey Jones, he declined the song, so parts of it were rewritten and the song renamed to "Mr. Ambiguous", used as their debut song, and the original song name, "Mamamoo", was used as their group name. Because were always asked about their group name, and it had no meaning they made up the story of it meaning baby babbling, and them wanting to approach their fans through the basic instinct of their music.

So this is a cover of a cover, the old guy in the video is the original singer of this version, and his reaction just staring in awe is because of how good their vocals are for his song, this is also one of my favorite performances.
You all should check out "Mamamoo Killing Voice" if you want a real vocal treat, it's next level. You should also check out "Taeyeon Killing Voice" for another top tier vocal performance. Taeyeon is one of the top soloists in Korea but her vocals could rival anyones if people could just get past the language barrier.

So just some context in case you're interested. This program is called "Immortal songs" where they usually bring a special guest who is considered a legend and dedicate the episode for his music and artists cover his songs and compete for votes. That old guy was the guest and he was Jo Young Nam. Mamamoo sang his Korean version of Tom Jones' Delilah. They're known for their vocals (even their dancing in late years) and live performances and they came multiple times in this program. If you like to see another powerful singer, u can check Ailee.
And yh they didn't rap for starry nights (like the same rapper in this performance did some kind of slow singing rap). Mamamoo have a variety of music like some might say every song is from different genre lol.
