The grain pattern are structures in the tree called medulary rays. These are channels that bring nutrients to the outside of the tree. They are noticeable in quarter sawn wood.

This is why the best necks have these exactly on the side where the binding would be. It's the strongest way to make them I have heard.
yep. It just shows the wood used was "turned on it's side" for lack of a better term. Usually the wood on the fronts of guitars and necks is milled so the orientation of the rays is not visible. look along side of lots of maple necks right near where the fretboard is, or along side the frets of maple necks and you can see it.
It also accounts for the lacey pattern you get on acoustic tops when they are perfectly quartersawn
12:01 ... I'm the buyer on that one... I definitely saw the dead spot. But, I made note of two things: the giant dead spot appears to be symmetrical (and the flame is otherwise pretty nice), and the guitar was priced $800 dollars below the price of new. In fact, when I purchased it, it was the lowest priced Gibson Les Paul Standard 60's on all of Reverb (new or used). So, it was not a difficult decision. And, the choice of pickups was intriguing to me.

Honestly, that Dirty Pelham finish SG was my absolute favorite from this video. I’ve wanted a green-ish guitar for some time, and that had the kind of irregularity I like while still looking very clean.
That funky grain pattern on that les Paul is called medullary rays, more common on quarter dawn oak.
At 10:50, that is grain that occurs in maple when it is perfectly quarter-sawn, which in this case is no-doubt unintentional. If you look at a headstock on a Fender Eric Johnson Strat, you can see a similar grain pattern, as the Eric Johnson Fenders typically have maple necks that are quartersawn.
I recently scored a 2021 SG Tribute husk, nothing but neck and body. I loaded it up and got it rolling. Love it. Cut my own pickguard from a discarded road sign. Hipshot lockers, SD P-Rails, push push pots. 50's wiring. Great guitar. Always love them SG's. Nothing special with the woods used on it except the very smooth grained and unremarkable maple neck. Stable af. They factory Plecked the frets. I could have bought a factory SG for what I spent on it and all the parts, but this thing is quite cool, and it's mine. Not another like it. But just one thing, I wish it had the vintage nut spacing, mine is of course modern and a twat hair wider. Tiny thing to even bitch about. But that is what we do, bitch about every little thing and then devise our own build just to bitch about that. The neck and body- 500 bucks, the parts 500 bucks, the experience, quality, tone and pride, priceless.
I'm old enough and this semi-hollow ES LP Special really won my heart!

I like the racing stripe on the second guitar . I wish Gobson would do one on a guitar that has either minihumbuckers or P90s. Maybe on a moded Firebird but also do the strip on the headstock. Being someone who is a fisherman I'm sure the color on back the mullet guitar has nothing to do with the fish. Maybe they were trying to get a vibe from when mullet hair cuts were popular. I would rock the SGwith the satin natural perimeter burst . Not so much the dirty Pelham blue SG . I like the one I bought from you better.

The Mullet! I was lucky enough to score this one and it is beyond cool in person. Two errors in the listing as they said it had push/pull pots and it does not, but I couldn't care less. It also listed it as a satin finish, but again... it actually has a gloss finish. Definitely keeping this one- might even grow out the hair to match :D

I picked up the Varitone SG and gotta say it sounds incredible. Super handy getting different textures for layering guitar tracks.

I love those alternative eletrics, anything that gives more tone possibilty (without taking basic off) is positive to me
That custom blue widow and the ES ice tea Les Paul are my favs. 2 totally different guitars but if I had to choose 1 of the 2, I'd go with the ES ice tea.
That mullet guitar proves that Gibson’s employees come back from lunch stoned out of their minds.
Like that dirty Pelham blue SG but would have liked it better with pickup covers. Still nice though and the metallic cran grape SG although it almost looked like a satin finish which I'm not as crazy about. Still lots of cool stuff though 👍

I'm all about stepping out and trying something new but that mullet guitar just went too far. And I even had a mullet in the 80s! It would have made a cool piece in your future museum under the WTF collection.

I purchased the SG and the toggle does exactly the same thing as it usually does. Middle is both pickups, up/down is just one pickup

I’ve stopped buying anything from Europe. Between VATs and outlandish shipping charges it’s clear they are not interested in a global market. $30 dollars for shipping a $25 item is ridiculous, when you can do it here for under $5. A $1000 item goes from manufacturers to consumers with 10% added each step…that’s about $464.10 going to the government and doesn’t even include markups at each step.

I always thought Gibson's future is with craved guitars? If I wanted a flat surface I'd rather chose Fender guitars since there's easier to mod out and are more affordable. I would put my money with PRS guitars over Gibson's stuff and a Music Man over Fender's stuff now, but now all my electric guitars will be built like my furniture? Built to last, with wood and shell and electronics from me. Today's guitars are over priced and built better from than what Americans are building today! Also aging, relic to make them look beat up being a new look is incredibly in poor taste even close up it part of it's character is uniform touch is smooth so it looks different but not really worn is too messed up? I want to get a beautiful peace of newness so I can fight and try to keep it looking new as long as I can. In return, I keep her I keep her, give her a name, clean oil her and changing her strings, trying to find her best voice she likes to sings with! Electric guitars these days are not hard to build. Kits are great! It's then after is tone and a well built straight! Electronics is easier. Necks are harder than I thought? That's what I'm trying to get past! He'll, Les Paul built his 1st guitar with a railroad block? Now that's insane!
