I feel the 80's and 90's had a special kind of energy to it to open the imagination and minds of the artist and also the listeners to produce such art.
This entire album was so moody dark and experimental but still had fragmented hooks, which Is Impressive seeing as how he just made the landmark Maxinquaye a year earlier and that never ages either. Martina and Tricky were that rare unlikely perfect combo from the start. 1994 - 1996 was the peak of Tricky.
I first discovered this song in 2006, on Limewire, while trying to download songs by Bjork, and this was mislabled as a Bjork song. This was my favourite Bjork song, lol.
same. also had some song called "Paul Oakenfold (Bjork) - Sex Drive" and "Bjork vs Tricky - Yoga (Massive Attack Remix)". just some pirated songs i have found.
Tricky:] (One, one, two, one, one, two Move over, move over, yeah, you heard what I said, move over) [Martina Topley-Bird:] I feel so lonely; haven’t slept a wink I walk the floor and watch the door and in between I drink Black coffee Love's a Hand-me-down brew I never know why Sunday in this weekday brew I'm talking to the shadows, 1 o'clock till 4 And Lord, how slow the moments go... All I do is pour Black coffee Since the blues caught my eye I'm hanging out on Monday but Sunday dreams too dry They say a man is born to go alone And a woman is born to weep and fret to stay at home And drown her past regrets in coffee and cigarettes And moody all the morning, moody all night And in between I drink Black coffee
Both Trip Hop and The Blues were both made by Black people who were the descendants of slaves....and so we (descendants of African slaves) have similar histories so its not that unimaginable that the outcome is of the same ilk.
Sampled a lot of really amazing music. This one is an amazing different take on a song from Elvis Costello.. pills and soap. I enjoy this one better.. moody. Love it.
This was the first version I've ever heard, and fell in love immediately. Did you guys know this song was originally written/published in 1948? And that jazz legend Sarah Vaughan first charted this in 1949? Yeah! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Coffee_(1948_song)
Whenever I ehard this song I thought of a woman sitting in a small New york apartment. her husband's left her and she just drinks black coffe to drown out his memory and smokes cigarettes to burn him away...but in reality all she's doing is becoming more addicted to him and is trapping herself in her box.......sorry, Tricky really inspries me as a writer lol
She sings fine, but I don't like the backing. For me it doesn't help to establish a believable atmosphere in keeping with the lyrics. It sounds more like a Bond theme tune. I'm back to Ella Fitzgerald's version, my favourite one although Sarah Vaughan's version is also very fine.

specially 90s

Thank the lord for Limewire
Okay I seriously thought I was the only one with the mislabeled song. When I was 11 j for sure thought this was a Bjork song
Same here. So glad for the mistake otherwise I'd have never found this song.
Tricky is an amazing artist
surely
MArtina and Tricky make a great duo!!!! LOVE this song :)
Love to listen to it in rainey days especially.
Blues is the emotional root of all trip hop.
I love dark music from the 90s.
that's a blues song from mid 1900
Oh okay🙎🏽♂️
Martine's voice is heaven
He was at his best with Martina.

Miss Martina makes this song even better!!!
I couldn't even imagine a blues song to become trip hop...well it 's pretty damn good....
I miss how MTV2 used to be...
I was in the car in California On my way! To Oregon and it was night and I woke up to my dad playing this song will never forget it.
Martina’s rendition is do incredible. I love Ella Fitzgerald’s original version just the sand but this one has some extra spice.
it's a wonderful feeling to listen to the song
So good!!
First heard this tune on DMT, was pretty menacing! Sick tune!
Clearly this is one of my favorites..
Love this song my other favorite from this album is "Poems"
And the main sample is from EC's "Pills & Soap"!
Tricky:]
(One, one, two, one, one, two
Move over, move over, yeah, you heard what I said, move over)
[Martina Topley-Bird:]
I feel so lonely; haven’t slept a wink

Black coffee

I have discs because I'm old..
In my years of music-listening, i've learned that anything is possible.
Just a tad innit?☕🐸🎩
Sucks how iTunes doesn't have this song. But still a great song!
So dark and intense. Perfect.

In coffee and cigarettes.
Couldn't agree more.

It is.. pills and soap. Elvis Costello
How can a human being be so talented?
This is Billy Holiday cover...right?

So good ❤
i am rediscovering tricky again fucking genius!!!
haha it was my comment. still listening to the GENIUS
nothing better than trip ~hop
Excellent!
The middle section either sounds amazing or familiar, is it a sample? Martina’s voice is something else
Yes of course.. a big time sample. From pills and soap by the great Elvis Costello.
we existed, we exist, we will exist
A sing for the times.
Anyone who who get me to reconsider Sarah Vaghan's version has to be good - but there again, Tricky is GOOD.
cherish the day
You're a freaking genius.
love it!
Black Coffe
Zzeerroo93 thanks for commenting :)

@lesbianmilk W...w...w..wow! This song is intense on pot. DMT??? I can't imagine!

Julie London is my favourite! I adore this backing though, I guess you have to like trip hop to appreciate it, the uneasiness is its charm.
