Thank you for that demonstration. There are so many who are not trying M398 because some one or other (LT) said it is going to lack toughness. I was able to get two of the Spyderco Mule Team versions of M398 (HRC 64) and will make a boat knife for me and one for my son.
Proper ht m398 has sufficient edge durability for EDC, while lousy ht just sucky brittle-mess. Later version of my ht - m398 65+rc - has much better edge stability and better retention, especially sharpened at 400 grit diamond plate (toothy edge). For this level of carbide volume%, m398 pares poorly compare to V-rich 15v, even less CV like 10v.
Thanks Mick! M398 ht 5.0A from grinding and sharpening, it felt similar to D2/PSF27 rather than zdp-189. Oddly at same hrc, this m398 ht 5 seem tougher than m390 ht 4. Since this test went very well, for comparison, I need to conventionally ht m398 as control/base. But first, I need to test 67rc 15V to see if ht 5 indeed improved impact load.

Thanks for the videos!
Great stuff Mr Luong...what was it like to work with?
It wasn't difficult like high vanadium% steels, since ~ 80% of m398 carbide is Cr. Without knowing m398, I probably would think it is m390/20cv.
@@BluntCutMetalWorks thanks for that....good to know!
Looks like it would hold up well to most reasonable uses a knife would be used for. 👍
BTW, I've yet to see a design of yours that I didn't like.

@@BluntCutMetalWorks Hopefully you'll post footage of the 15V testing. 👍
Just found channel likely likey
Thanks.
