I first watched this video around ten years ago when I wasn't very good at playing by ear. Learning this song (with lots of mistakes) back then was so rewarding. These days I can figure out pretty much any song pretty quickly, and I think this video was a big inspiration for getting to this point, what with all the extended chords and unique voicings! Best ballad of all time as well - I love singing along in the car. Thanks Brian!
Mr Brian, you're so talented. I love the way you play the piano in a very soulful way. Your voice is also very soulful. I've been loving your music since the 90s back when I was in my school days.👍😉
"We're in the key of Eb major but it's a relative to C minor." You know how many "musicians" wouldn't even know that?!!!! You're so awesome!!! I listened to you in college...you were probably in college too. I knew you were awesome after hearing the first measure back then!!
Thank you so much for that you brightening up my day like only you can the way you do the way only you do. Thank you for opening up your love of music and sharing it with us. Thank you so much.
I know you prolly get this a lot... but ur my hero... I've been listening and admiring your music for a better part of 12 years now... U are the reason why I play sing and play piano... Just wanted to let you know that...
@ 1:54 this is a D7 inversion D7/F#(3rd) and dude when you're playing G-7 b6 considering you're going to G7(b9b5) you're already in the locrian mode. Also when you're on the C part F-7 is your phrygian #6 ( \ G )
Are you serious? My all time favorite B Mac song. God has blessed you. I only pray my son will learn to play half as good as you do. Thanks for sharing. Chris! Go get on that piano!!!
First and foremost, I admire your music greatly Mr. McKnight, and it is very considerate of you to breakdown your approach to the songs you've composed. I agree with your view on music not being restricted to rules, or ''the right way'', that's what I love about piano. Cminor, F#dim, Eb Maj, C Maj, and back to C minor...."Never Felt This Way" imho is the ultimate love song, dissonance, tension, but still hopeful, that's what love is to me. Thank you so much for your time Mr. McKnight...
This is going to be my wedding song! Every time i hear it i cry😥 this is so beautiful..thank you for this being a very special part of my life Brian McKnight😘
@JKStone234 I think his fingers pretty much show the vicinity of where the chords might be. I think it's better to figure them out from Brian's basic examples than just to be served everything on a platter. Even though I haven't played in a while, man I'm glad I learned all those chords and structure when I was younger, especially from the school of velocity. I'm looking to get back on the bike now.
Wow, thanks Brian! some of those chords are actually simpler than I thought, but the composition of them are still genius. I still have to work on that theory a little more so I can grasp this quicker, but thanks!
Lovely hope you continue doing these and maybe even some vocal pointers to. I love that you don't just 'show the notes' but explain and give chords :-)
Thanks for this tut. Does anyone know the scale/chord he's running on the line "...starts a burning in my chest"? I've got most of this down so far. Can't figure that one out and it is one of the most powerful movements in his recorded version. Thanks.
You feat Wayman Tisdale: What is the chord the bar before the verse? It’s throwing me for loop. I’m getting an A altered vibe but bass is taking a walk on the Bb minor side of the street. And the midst of all that there’s a F-Gb-G menage a trois going on. I’m very confused perhaps a E/F# to A/B or something…Kindest regards...
Help me cast the perfect spell Wizard. I remember playing ball with you in Van Nuys. Mike with the black Benz was there. You know the first black man that beat the three strikes law in LA. Get at me, you'll be surprised what I have to offer the team.💎
i know you are doing tutorials on mostly playing. but can you do something on basic singing techniques and how to sing high notes correctly, and also how to improve your range. i would really appreciate it. i sing in a acapella gospel group and want to be a better singer
lol oh i see. thanks for your response. well i am good with using falsetto. i wanted to know how to sing high my specking voice, or if you call it mix or full belt. basically i wanted to make sure i am using the correct technique and built my rang from there

man, you make me sick. lol I just wish i could sing and then i would be happy. You, Stevie Wonder, Peabo Bryson, Charlie Wilson, James Ingram, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Howard Hewett, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Teddy Pendergrass, Jeffery Osbourne, Hall and Oaks, Nat King Cole, etc. you all are great! I'm old school all the way. Can you please do a cover of a Leo Sayer song, "When I need you"?And do it in your style. I know that you would make it a classic once again. Thanks bruh!
everything you're doing sounds great Brian I'm a singer and keyboardist myself and also I do a little production work what kind of production setup do you have
Does anyone know where I can get this sheet music? Everything I look for is either wrong or the Alicia Keys version. I want to play the song the way Brian does! Such a beautiful song.
check out Amber Bullock version of this song with a small orchestra they are using sheet music all the way or play around with chord voicings I don't think it's a difficult song to play, Brian makes it look so easy on this video... what a great musician he is
Would you please attend my wedding and play this song for my fiance... Pleeeease im here in texas ive been a huge fan for many years my lady would love this...
Bro! (is that disrespectful to call you? Lol). I love that you are doing this for us but these are not very helpful. Your only explaining a few of the chords and you say them really fast. Could you maybe include all of them in the description? We appreciate you mr. McKnight. Keep makin the music man, we'll keep buying it!

I need to learn this. It's been requested at a wedding. Do you have a more detailed tutorial? By the way... you're one of my favorite artists ever.
Greatest vocals of all time. He's like the Jordan of vocals and music. Guy is surreal. Not possible. I picture angels singing like this.
