me upon realizing i dont have an actual portfolio of art or designs and feeling overwhelmed and defeated at the idea of planning to start one Zep: yo dude check this outttt *drops 30min video*
i dont know if its usefull but, a good way to save time when doing character designs is by drawing them in grayscale and using gradients to aply color so you dont need to repain and render all the time
These designs look really cool! Although I would like to point out, at 24:36, both the Porcelain demon and shadow's final drawing overlap >.< The character sprites also seem to be like, out of sync? They don't exactly match your tone in some places it seems :0
it can be hard to know what to do when you don't have technical guidance/ industry experience but you definitely have really good ideas. I study under industry animators and something that i think will help your character line-ups is posing! Everything in animation should be intentional and often overexaggerated to get the point across, you want your audience to immediately know the character's personality from the way they are posed. A method to help with this is to turn your character's outline completely black (like a shadow) to see what you can interpret from a shadow alone without any facial expressions. Your scholar posing was very good! but i feel like you could push Yuka and Shadow's posing more. You can also improve posing by thinking about the body's line of action, 2 of your characters both share the same front facing LOA, try to not have too many head on front facing poses, it will create a drawing that is more interesting to look at! Also learn about tangents! super important, super annoying lines that intersect and can ruin the animation aspect of a character. For example, in the scholar's pose, his chin is almost intersecting with the book, in the future try to distance them more for a clearer shadow. Your general character (the one with armor on) has a few tangents, the one that first caught my eye was the antennae intersecting with the line detail on his helmet. Tangents are important to avoid when making characters for animation because it can ruin a character rotation's line art. (which would be the next step after a character lineup) Hope this is useful and sorry if anything I say is confusing, I kinda skimmed through the video so my bad if i missed anything mega-contradicting. You've already got a good sense of design though reminds me of Kung fu panda! Just wanted to give some tips if your goal is to break into the industry.
I feel like WOTU could be an ENA-like web series where each video/episode covers a different dimension (kinda like infinity train). I like how this world has a really good story structure
keep trying! this idea has so much potential that even I would be excited to be on a team of animators working on it. the development phase takes time, so there's no need to rush it even if you think you can't do long term stuff
I LOVE LONGFORM VIDEOS‼️‼️‼️sorry I haven’t been able to make it to much livestreams but im rlly excited to see what wotu will be like in the future! the pray mantis species is SUCH a cool idea and id love to make a little pray mantis villager 4 it ngl… also the arcane brainrot is too real, I’ve bingewatched the entire first season and half of the second these past few days 😔😔 AND mouthwashing too, sm for making art of my own characters ig
Your video is giving me Pikmin vibes with the music and your character being in a spaceship thingy and I love it lol. Very creative and I'll definitely be checking your channel out more!
These designs are one 0f the coolest things I’ve ever seen and I could never do this in like a month 😂. It’s be so cool if I could collab w/ you since my persona is like, a technology program *cry* but still, your character designs are still cool fam 🌟🌟🌟
I would recommend for shadow to look at Sylvia from wander over yonder who is also kind of like them a sentient being, but also a steed that takes their character around the universe. She is very independent is also very kind and loving, but you can still tell that she is a steed with little details , like a saddle in sometimes rains and also she kind a looks like a horse a little bit but a raptor also but enough for her when she’s by her self able to move like someone who does their actions on purpose I don’t know it’s kind of hard to explain. Just look up Sylvia from wonder order yonder
The designs were really cool but my main critique would be the MC seems kind of boring looking compared to the side characters, but maybe if you did have time to do expressions they'd appear a bit more fuller a character? You basically want the MC to be one someone can latch on to rather than appearing pretty faceless, or at least have them move in an interesting way rather than standing still. I had to do a lot of this in uni for "visual design and communication" and definitely give yourself the majority of the 5 days to design the MC themselves as that's what the boss will be looking for first rather than the other characters which should feel more like a tool the MC can use to benefit their story rather than an extra limb (which Shadow sort of feels like, and by that I mean the creature had more command over the story than the MC especially by being the one to kill the antagonist from the sounds of it. They also appear to have a lot more power than the MC) Sorry if this seems a bit chunky but just speaking from experience lol It's an interesting challenge, just be careful about burnout as it can harm your body and not only the mind
My problem with my ocs is that they have personalities and powers and backstories but I dont actually have a storyline or like a setting apposed to bsd detective agency hp wizarding school can anyone help with this?
Tbh don’t blame yourself for poor time planning you worked really hard and 5 days to do an entire portfolio is a challenge but also unrealistic FOR THE SAKE of a challenge it works to force you to get stuff done But for an official portfolio that is way too short an amount of time and I’d say most people take a year to min a month to do a portfolio worthy of applications, and if they do it in shorter time it’s bc they plan to swap out and develop new pieces often, while working on other projects and just want a starter portfolio. For five days you got A LOT DONE. The only way you could have gotten more done is by drawing 24/7 all day I feel, and that to me is an unrealistic aspiration for any artist Tho I will agree working smarter and not harder and making work with more of a purpose than just to do more is always good!
as someone who’s currently developing a bug humanoid species, this video was overflowing with inspiration and cool ideas.
Your profile pic is discomforting and funny to me.
