- Stalemate as Ireland and England play out a scoreless draw at Lansdowne Road.
Heavy rain had turned the playing surface into a mud bath and at times reduced the contest to a lottery with moments of comedy as the players struggled to hold on to their footing and the ball. The conditions also made the 75th game between the two countries a tough physical encounter as Ireland and England played out the first nil all draw since 1910.
Ireland played England at Lansdowne Road on 9 February 1963. The final score was Ireland 0 England 0.
The highlights shown here are taken from 'Sports Special' broadcast 10 February 1963. The commentator is Fred Cogley.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Thank you for sharing this 😊
Jayne! The infringements around the breakdown and in a ruck. In a maul they are almost upright. The place kicking was shocking - couldn’t reach any distance even with the wind. Best aspect of the match was the atmosphere - more people. Ah the good old days of the terraces at Lansdowne Road.
Kicking a wet ball in those days was so much more difficult.
I remember back in the ‘60s we got a leather football. My brother was in goal and saved a powerful shot from my dad. His reward? A broken wrist
The kicker was Brian Marshall. Making his only appearance in an Ireland shirt. A one-cap wonder. This was the era of Tommy Kiernan, who played at full back in all the other games that year. Maybe he was injured for this one.
Don't forget it was an amateur sport in those days and the ball was leather, when it's wet it's like kicking a ball weighing a few kilos
Is that Fred Cogley on commentary?
sounds like him alright. I would be confident that it is.
It's him!
Yes, a young Fred Cogley
Yes! The great Fred Cogley.
Sure sounds like him
Ah the good auld days, when the mud was six inches deep before a ball was kicked. By half time even the players couldn't tell who wore the green shirts and who wore the white ones. To cap it all the match finished in a stunning 0-0 draw.
The only rugby international match that I'm aware of that finished 0-0. It hasn't happened since in the 5/6 Nations.
the past is a foreign country, they do things differently there
I.A. Richards?
@@smythharris2635 Its the opening line in L.P. Hartleys book, The Go-Between. Made into a great move, with Alan Bates and Julie Christie.
@@williammohan9784 Ah yes, I couldn't quite place it.
@ no problem,
England in white 😂
They are still playing till the first score.

Referee not playing advantage at 2:00 when Ireland had clearly won the scrum and could have started a movement well inside the England 25 (yes, it was in yards then, not meters!). Referee could have called them back had a movement failed to gain any ground, and then awarded the penalty for the English infringement in the scrum.

Ireland vs England Rugby, Lansdowne Road, Dublin City, Ireland 1963 31.1.25 1820pm there's a game tonight - 6 nations... so that should see me thru.... the eire vs England game was decent enough last night - the U20's .......... Ireland U20 3 vs 19 England U20 . as for the conditions, here.... most excellent.
The striking thing is how neither team took time over anything. A scrum, line out and so on, constantly rushed through. Usually resulting in mistakes and penalties.
@@gab99 Rugby back then was more of a 'pure sport' - it's wasn't a matter of 'life and death' as it is now . There wasn't wast amounts of money involved in it. It was purely amateur
@peterjd3170 am old enough to recall the amateur days! It's just looking back, it really stands out. They are forming scrums barely as the refs whistle blows! I wonder how a team could have stepped up in performance just by a coach saying, you have the ball lads, control it, just take that moment, make them wait. All ifs and buts now.
Who won this game?
Ireland 0 - England 0
It was a draw 0-0.
Aaah ..I told Paddy to to move dem pigs a week ago
I'd say the Irish won - 16 players and no sign of a referee
Les vieux stade comme Lansdowne road, l'ancien Twickenham, l'arms Park, l'ancien murrayfield et bien sûr notre stade de Colombes avait bien plus de charme et d'authenticité que les merdes modernes d'aujourd'hui
The final result here was a 0-0 draw.
the grounds were dreadful in the past almost nil drainage. The skill level had to be high just to catch that bar of soap
Are Willie John McBride & Mike Gibson the only surviving members of this 1963 Irish team to play England?
