It’s TV for translucent varnish. Just like ES for electric Spanish and SG for solid body guitar and PAF for patent applied for. They weren’t naming it after the color of a television set…not unless their marketing team was suffering from a mental breakdown.
I was surprised by the fact that I actually don’t mind the TV yellow finish. I ended up going with the Teal SG Standard that he reviewed last time - well, a different one. I like chunkier necks and prefer the full batwing pickguard, but will say the ‘61 pickups were much tastier in this video than the 490s. And a hard shell case would’ve been nice. But I’m happy with my choice. Now just need the damn thing to arrive!!! 😂
I loved the “movement” in the “flame” of the teal one , that was absolutely gorgeous ! I’m not much on green of any shade but I must say , that one had me thinking !
Your's is definitely worth getting a hard shell case, for it. I just don't understand why they all don't get one. It's almost as if Gibson is going "cheap" on us. I don't mean price wise, either. I prefer the the thicker "baseball bat" necks, too.
You can always buy a HSC and can always replace the pups for a set of Seymore Duncan Pearly Gates and still have an axe just as good as the more expensive '61. I have both and love them equally and can't imagine being without them.🙂
The guitar center silverburst also has an Ebony board. GC is also offering a 61 in tobacco sunburst. Zzounds is offering a natural walnut sg standard too.
Can you do a recap on the different inlays, and which ones shrink and/or release gas? Maybe combine that with the different pickups and comparing their sounds?
Dan Earliwine and Gene from Stew Mac, just did a video about an immaculate1955 Les Paul special. all original with a Gibson amp that was in perfect condition and it was TV yellow. and they said that white guitars had very poor contrast on black and white TVs. and that was the reason for the TV yellow finish. the person that originally purchased the guitar had passed away. and they took very good care of the instrument. there was the guitar, and the amp, and a perfect condition matched case. with really cool case candy. and they said that it probably worth around twenty grand. they had a couple tiny fixes to do to it and when they were done. it looked beautiful and played fantastic. I watched that video last night and I have to say it was one of the nicest guitars have seen in quite a while.
The TV Yellow and Vintage Cherry are my favorite finishes. The Teal is pretty sweet, too. However, I decided to go with the Silver Mist. I really liked that look on the Billie Joe Armstrong Junior models. It arrives today. New guitar day!
I keep hearing really good things about the 61 SG. Your review is no different, there’s definitely a uniqueness to the sound and those new finishes are very tempting. I never used to get on with SGs in my younger days of having my guitar “low slung” but as I’ve aged and straps shortened I think I’m willing to give it another try.

Yo, original catalogs say limed mahogany and limed oak as TV yellow which was 100% a popular furniture finish of the era…can’t stand the “looked better on tv” spiel.
What do you mean you "can't stand" It? You can say you don't believe, or you favour the named after furniture route, but someone requesting a spacific colour because it looked better on TV is a plausible reason, I can't see what's unbearable about it.
I've always been told that. The popular white colorway was too blinding when displayed on people's TV sets, so they 'colorized the white' so it would display on the grey scale, and then they added the oddball light grain-fill so people could see that it was wood as well. Makes sense to me. Like it was originally intended just for 'movie magic', but somehow stuck. How do you make sense of "TV yellow furniture" - like where would that come from?
@@Charles-DarwinBack in the 50s the TV Yellow finish was applied to the student models (Juniors, Specials). Thats why I always found that explanation odd. A musician big enough to air on TV would not have played a student model guitar, would he?
I recently got a used 80’s Explorer (the new one) and it also had the bridge almost at rock bottom. Made me wonder if the neck set was off. I have it with the store I got it from to take care of a bad switch and they’re going to check it out.
The GC in Agusta has a metallic orange Custom Shop SG in stock. Considering the asking price I was pleasantly surprised they let me play it but they couldn’t find a cord to use to plug it in? Anyway, it was very lite weight wise but I didn’t think it felt any better than my LPGT!
Beautiful guitar!!! Love the weight!!! I have a ‘19 original collection stopbar tailpiece that unfortunately had to get returned for fret popping out and binding peeling, and I take good care of my instruments. That being said after they were fixed for free, it’s an absolute rock and roll machine. It’s great to see a focus on Gibson USA and seems like the kool colours will let folks see how good these are. The white will age realllllly kool I think
i really like this tv yellow SG. i think it would be my choice of the group with the 61 pickguard. it looks really nice. ive got a tv yellow les paul special and i like the look.
Shame about the QC on such a fine SG ' ...the tones are incredible and the whole aesthetic with that deep yellow body, the plastic tip Klusons and the black guard ' beautiful.
A TV Yellow SG huh? Well, at least it's a different color! I'd take that over whatever that blue was, supposed to be? Or the usual red. I have a. . . . . . . What's referred to as faded brown or something, I think? It's the, SGJ. Either way, I took the black tuners off of it & put Gibson white button bean tuners & it has a Ttop in the bridge & a Seth Lover Antiquity in the neck instead of those crazy black covered things & I love it!
If I can get the tone,feel,playability, history,looks etc etc of a Gibson ill gladly take it. Even if it means there is a tiny black smudge on the headstock. People have their priorities all screwed up.
I took a close look at my headstock. Mines the very same as the one he reviewed. My headstock paint was very cleanly done, no slop. Mine was 227 week of 23
Those '61 pickups sound 3 dimensional compared to the 490 set you reviewed in the SG Standard. Fabulous sound! Terrible QC on the headstock as you pointed out, but the TV Yellow is really nice looking. I don't care for the look of the batwing and IME the bridge pickup height adjustment is hindered with parallel direct mount to the PG. I played the white '61 at my shop just yesterday - what a killer. I'm going to grab it tomorrow. BTW, I agree with you about the neck - while thinner than the Standard, it's not too slim at all. Very comfortable. Did I say those pickups sound awesome?!
I don't know if I ever thought that an SG standard would come from the factory in TV yellow, it's a dream come true 😍 and that particular one sounds FANTASTIC!!! I would be so excited if I was the new guitar day purchaser. Jealous!
Honest question... all the print I've read about the '61 says it should have 60s Burstbucker pickups. These don't appear to be the correct ones, am I wrong?
I like that they are offering these models in TV Yellow. I didn't get mine in that color because I already own a Gibson LP Special in TV Yellow. I got my Gibson '61 SG Standard in Translucent Teal. Let me tell you if you are into green with hints of teal? get yourself one the color is beautiful. I call it more like emerald green in color and depending on how the lights hit flashes of teal. I'm a baseball neck type guy or thicker necks but this one is slim but not up to the point of feeling like a kid's toy. I don't have large hands but this guitar plays fast and absolutely nothing gets in the way of your left hand, a shredder delight that's easy to get to even on the 22nd fret. It is a well-balanced guitar and it's light! I went for this color not only because it's beautiful, but it's different than any other SG color. My QC issues? I don't have any. I like the '61 standards better, sorry not a fan of the batwing guard. The more wood to show the better with a cleaner look. The PICKUPS stock is fantastic! I will not change a thing, and I'm very picky when it comes to that. Looks, feel, and sound is what make it special. It quacks, snarls, growls and it Rocks! It cleans up nicely when you dial the volume back when you have your amp set up to that sweet spot. Woman tone? oh yeah, Clapton would approve lol. The part that makes me mad is that I can't call her "Greeny" seems like that has been talked about too much doncha think? lol. I purchased mine with 18 months interest-free with only one payment and I was able to play it. There are no excuses not to own a Gibson anymore with a lot of Gibson models that are offered right now with that flexibility. I pay more a month on my freaking cable bill lol. I wasn't always an SG guy, but now I'm loving it almost as much as being a Les Paul guy for over 35 years. Almost, but it's different and I love that. If you on the fence about owning the '61? just get one, you won't be disappointed.

I love to see the wood grain in lighter colors. I say go for it, I love mine and I didn't have to put different PUPS. The PUPS are different in the batwing as to the single guard. But like any guitar, we have to play and decide. That TV Yellow is looking good lol. I think an SG in the classic white is next for me or that new custom color Oxblood one for the LP. Some Jeff Beck vibes. Keep Rockin'

Maybe it was an off color one etc. But yeah I hear ya man... but agreed I love how you see the wood grain with the lighter finishes! So cool! My Gary Clark JR SG is a similar shade but it's a solid color. P-90s are great pickups as you know. A classic white SG would be cool too. Yep keep on rocking!

Make no mistake, it's an incredible playing guitar, versatile and amazing. It's a big body but I'm 5ft 7 and I have no issues. It's the type of guitar that most players don't even try.
I find the TV yellow finish strangely attractive. By my standards, it's an ugly colour, but it feels "right" on this SG. The contrast with the black pick guard really pops.
I was watching this video with my darker gaming glasses on, the TV yellow looked like natural wood...then I remembered I had those darker blue light removing glasses on...BUT.... when you showed the part of the area you showed that one side had woodgrain showing through the other side was really thick painted you ought to check it out. my gaming glasses are a darker amber so I don't get all the blue light effects while playing video games.. less headaches
I’ve seen a few of the Tv yellow SG’s and you definitely want that dark rosewood for the fretboard. They look washed out to me if it’s too pale. I’ll be waiting for a used deal on a white standard.
I own 2 SG's ., I would gladly trade either one of them in to get this one I love the color, I'll just ignore the mistakes on the headstock I really dont care that much

@hkguitar1984 howdy HK! Yeah I agree this is a great looking finish! How I'd want mine to look. I have always liked the LP Specials in TV Yellow with P-90s. But I saw one recently at a local Guitar Center that was brand new and the color looked so so. I was actually kind of disappoinperiod perhaps like you said there are lots of variations with this finish.
@@jonathanhudak2059 Yes, lots of variations. Many have the appearance of a yellow-ish/milky white wash, that style has its own character and reminds me of a true vintage LP Special. The TV Yellow finish on these SGs is more of a modern take on the old style. Just another one of the differences between Gibson Custom Shop and Gibson USA.
I dont really like the solid TV yellow but this trans version on this SG I do like, but normally I dont like trans colours on mahogany but love them on poplar. I have realised I am not easy to please LOL
How about a chrome cover P90 In the neck position? And keep the Humbucker in the Bridge position. Thoughts? could that be an option if you wanted It? Imagine the tonal possibilities...
I love gibsons.. I own a few.. but man much cheaper brans put out flawless paint jobs for way cheaper... wtf can't they get paint .. fit n finish dialed..
Well, either it's your amp, the amp setting, the guitar or the pups, or your playing, I really love the sound(came from strat player). It's still have the brightness and punch, and drive the amps on the dirty setting. 👍👍👍
QC issues on a Gibson? Say it ain't so! Seriously, it would ALMOST be worth it to buy one of the multiple thousands of dollars "cheap" Gibson and continually send it back with notes until you get what you actually pay for. I wonder how long they would put up with it.
The story I'd heard is that the lighting in studios would flush out a weight finish on television. So when it came time for Les Paul to go on TV he had what ever guitar he was rocking at the time and Mary had that yellow guitar she was given to play with looked white on a black and white screen.
You know I always thought it was gospel but I'm not sure anymore.. the Trogster spoke about the finish on the TV sets of the day and then it dawned on me that makes perfect sense.. my mother wasn't a fan of that furniture blonde color but I had neighbors & probably relatives who appreciated the style for whatever reason & come to think of it my old 60s whiteguard Tele was a blonde see through finish so fender may have been trying to cash in on the furniture fashion finish as well... Guitar RABBITHOLE conspiracy theory lol
From the research I did at the time years ago. White guitars would be very bright and washed out on the first black and white TV's. The studio light would be reflected by the white finish. White reflects light very well, thats why car dashboards are black and not white. So TV Yellow was invented to look white on TV without being washed out and look terrible. You have to remember the quality of broadcasting and TV in the 50s. The looks better on TV is not true and no idea how that started. Anyway beautiful guitar and honestly I didn't like the sound that much. Maybe in the room it sounds way better. But still beautiful SG.

I love 61 TVY SGs, so classy, and look like Custom Shops. But the Teal Standard looks so unique and fun to watch, a very pretty colour.

The Guitar Center SG does have an ebony fretboard. Perhaps that is part of the higher price?

I love the TV Yellow on this model. It’s probably my favorite color of the new 2023 batch, although I like the Teal too.

I just purchased the TV YELLOW SG, and it is an incredible sustain monster in my Marshall DSL100. I have always loved 60s Burstbuckers.

I've seen the silver burst SG in person and it's very nice.

You never mention that the standard has a completely different neck joint than the 61 style. To me they feel like different guitars.

I would've loved this aesthetic, small pickguard and kluson tuners, but with the beefier neck like in the standard, not the slim 61.

I really love the 61 Burstbuckers.
I find the TV yellow finish strangely attractive. By my standards, it's an ugly colour, but it feels "right" on this SG. The contrast with the black pick guard really pops.

I was watching this video with my darker gaming glasses on, the TV yellow looked like natural wood...then I remembered I had those darker blue light removing glasses on...BUT.... when you showed the part of the area you showed that one side had woodgrain showing through the other side was really thick painted you ought to check it out. my gaming glasses are a darker amber so I don't get all the blue light effects while playing video games.. less headaches
My SG Junior has some finish buildup in the bevels, and it honestly doesn't bother me. Maybe that's common with these stains.
I’ve seen a few of the Tv yellow SG’s and you definitely want that dark rosewood for the fretboard. They look washed out to me if it’s too pale. I’ll be waiting for a used deal on a white standard.
I own 2 SG's ., I would gladly trade either one of them in to get this one I love the color, I'll just ignore the mistakes on the headstock I really dont care that much

Unless it's a historic the headstock veneer is black fiber, not holly. If it is holly, it's painted black (holly is cream/white like maple naturally)

I've seen so many different shades of the TV yellow, this SG today is (IMO) one of the better examples of that finish. I can only imagine those guitars looking better the more that lacquer finish ages.
@hkguitar1984 howdy HK! Yeah I agree this is a great looking finish! How I'd want mine to look. I have always liked the LP Specials in TV Yellow with P-90s. But I saw one recently at a local Guitar Center that was brand new and the color looked so so. I was actually kind of disappoinperiod perhaps like you said there are lots of variations with this finish.
@@jonathanhudak2059 Yes, lots of variations. Many have the appearance of a yellow-ish/milky white wash, that style has its own character and reminds me of a true vintage LP Special. The TV Yellow finish on these SGs is more of a modern take on the old style. Just another one of the differences between Gibson Custom Shop and Gibson USA.

I like the minor flaws and goofs. Gives them a signature and shows these are worked on by a human. Not another one like it.

I dont really like the solid TV yellow but this trans version on this SG I do like, but normally I dont like trans colours on mahogany but love them on poplar.

Last time I heard the tv yellow story the word was that white guitars looked crazy on black and white tv so tv yellow was invented/preferred
Maybe I'm wrong but, didn't T.V. yellow used to be a brighter and thicker yellow? I'm not much of a fan of this new "mustard" yellow.
It's a tiny bit brite for me. but that goes away with dirt on it.
You should review the Gibson sg 61/59 fat neck from MF/GC not a lot of reviews for them

I love gibsons.. I own a few.. but man much cheaper brans put out flawless paint jobs for way cheaper... wtf can't they get paint .. fit n finish dialed..
That headstock is unacceptable, I'd be sending it back. That's an entry level Epiphone mistake, definitely doesn't belong on a premium instrument.

Well, either it's your amp, the amp setting, the guitar or the pups, or your playing, I really love the sound(came from strat player).
It's still have the brightness and punch, and drive the amps on the dirty setting. 👍👍👍

The traditionally mounted ABR-1 was a bad design. You would not want that on your guitar. The current method is way better.

QC issues on a Gibson? Say it ain't so! Seriously, it would ALMOST be worth it to buy one of the multiple thousands of dollars "cheap" Gibson and continually send it back with notes until you get what you actually pay for. I wonder how long they would put up with it.
Gibson prices are outrageous.

The story I'd heard is that the lighting in studios would flush out a weight finish on television. So when it came time for Les Paul to go on TV he had what ever guitar he was rocking at the time and Mary had that yellow guitar she was given to play with looked white on a black and white screen.
You know I always thought it was gospel but I'm not sure anymore.. the Trogster spoke about the finish on the TV sets of the day and then it dawned on me that makes perfect sense.. my mother wasn't a fan of that furniture blonde color but I had neighbors & probably relatives who appreciated the style for whatever reason & come to think of it my old 60s whiteguard Tele was a blonde see through finish so fender may have been trying to cash in on the furniture fashion finish as well... Guitar RABBITHOLE conspiracy theory lol
From the research I did at the time years ago. White guitars would be very bright and washed out on the first black and white TV's. The studio light would be reflected by the white finish. White reflects light very well, thats why car dashboards are black and not white. So TV Yellow was invented to look white on TV without being washed out and look terrible. You have to remember the quality of broadcasting and TV in the 50s. The looks better on TV is not true and no idea how that started. Anyway beautiful guitar and honestly I didn't like the sound that much. Maybe in the room it sounds way better. But still beautiful SG.
