The AHS autumn 1970 Regional Playoff game against Odessa Permian was a disaster. Almost immediately in the game, AHS running back Craig Hayes caught a kick and stepped backward into the Panther end zone, inadvertently ceding a safety and giving the initiative to Odessa. Things only went downhill from there.
That game was the first time I'd seen Odessa Permian -- and everything about Permian was insane. AHS middle linebacker Carl Pointer told me years later that even as the Colts arrived on their bus in Abilene, Permian fans had lined up on both sides of the street, loudly heckling them... he said it was a bit frightening, like a mob threatening violence.
When the Panther band marched at halftime, and formed the school motto on the field, the announcer cooed, "Ah yes, of course -- MOJO !" We Arlington fans looked around at each other in puzzlement. "MOJO"? What the Big H is "MOJO"? Never heard of it!
