For type 2 diabetics,the key is keeping daily carb intake low. Maybe 40 gr or 20 gr daily. No pastas, breads, cereals ect. Always checking your sugar an hour after eating to see how what you’ve eaten has affected your blood sugar.
I was diagnosed with diabetes last year, I was prescribed one tablet which I take daily. I found this video really informative as I have never had any numbers given to me and what I should do, so thank you for the information. Should I have been given a kit to test myself?
Short answer is “probably not, but depends, and maybe” Patients on insulin need blood sugar monitors, patient with unstable diabetes do too. Patients with gestational diabetes as well Otherwise diabetics are not REQUIRED to do regular blood sugar testing… but I like data, so I’d personally have one to understand my condition if I was affected
Has your A1C been in the normal range? If not, definitely. If you don't know what your blood sugar readings are then how are they tracking if you need more or less medicine? If your blood sugar is staying high, it causes organ damage.
It’s a big secret apparently. The chemist will test the “machine” to make sure it’s working properly. But no instructions so that you use it properly. Definitely nothing about numbers to look for or what you should do. While Dr Google has given me some help it’s the first thing they tell you not to do. Starting with a different doctor in the hope that I can learn what I should be doing. The 3 monthly checks went out the window with Covid. Other then watch it gradually climb there was no information that lead me to believe it wasn’t merely the thing to do that looked like they were doing something. I’ve learned a lot from this video. The jury is still out on the use of wipes from an evidence perspective Lots of people have VERY firm beliefs either on the “DONT USE THEM”, or “meh they are fine” I decided NOT to include a major comment on the wipes for this reason But in the description I did like to a research article that I think sums it up well “Alcohol wipes DO affect blood glucose readings when done in laboratory conditions - HOWEVER - the impact quite small, and unlikely to be relevant in real world clinical practice” If there is a situation where you CANT wash hands, then I’d advocate using a wipe 😊

Would you be able to do a video explaining blood sugar levels, high, low, what they mean, how they affect the functioning of the body, what are the units measuring? Something like you did for the blood pressure video. As far as I know I don't have diabetes, but regardless I find it fascinating to know more about medical science, and blood in particular is quite interesting, I've on occasion had blood tests which measured a range of things such as cholesterol and other stuff, I'm guessing iron levels, maybe testosterone and other things. Would be nice to be able to more fully understand the results of such tests. As blood sugar levels arw something that can be monitored at home, understanding them could be useful for many people.
It depends on what you’re doing it for, Often people test in the morning when they wake up, and then before a meal Some people - for example monitoring of gestational diabetes will do about an hour or so after food It all depends on the why

I find it interesting that for testing purposes you use the non dominant hand but whenever I’m at the Red Cross giving blood they always use my dominant hand to check my hemoglobin because it’s always higher in that hand. I’m assuming for diabetes purposes it’s just to save pain for the patient and doesn’t actually have any real effect on the results but I’d be curious to know the differences if there are any, so fascinating!
My father forgot to wash his hands before testing once, and he kept giving himself the wrong dose of insulin because his sugar was reading too high due to food on his skin. The EMS had to push 3 bags of glucose before they got him to the hospital, 10 minutes away. His sugar was down to 25...

Yeah stress and anxiety do raise blood sugar, or rather make your blood sugar over time very "all over the place", lots of spikes and dips. Bcs if you think about it, you're putting your body in a fight or flight mode setting, so everything goes crazy. Also, due to stress, you get alot of cortisol which blocks insulin receptors generally. That's why after along period odlf stress, you feel like you're crashing, you're body gets it under control.

I’m not familiar with that approach. Inositol is just another sugar. So seems a strange choice. Your doctor may be trying to assist from a diet perspective, it would be worth while discussing with them further

Can being on vacation in a higher elevation for a week affect blood test? I live on sea level and have one on the 20th to check my kidneys and I’m wondering if it will affect the results? I will be back home on the 16th
If only vegetarian Jelly Babies were easier to get ahold of... They do exist, but are rarely sold in supermarkets chains, where a busy herbivorous diabetic - or Timelord in a diet - might most easily shop for them... given all the other dietary requirements 'the big four' tell us they cater for.

These type of blood glucose lancets are pretty painful, if you’re diabetic and don’t know, the accu chek fast clix is virtually pain free

ideally 4.4-7.2 mmol/l before food, under 8.5 mmol/l target 90 mins after food

Some measuring devices can be delayed. If it shows trends that’s good to look at!

Different measures must be used in this because I always thought normal is 90 to 110
Yes, they use different measurement in the UK.
It's more of 80-130 before meal is normal and anything below 180 after meal is normal , that what we use in India
@@4_S_282 In the US, our numbers are more on the conservative side. Fasting sugar should be under 100 and under 140 after eating.
