Getting out in the garden or any type of nature truly does heal the soul. So often I have felt pretty cruddy - and I get out in that yard-sometimes mow the lawn, sometimes pull weeds, prune and before you know it-I’m feeling so much better. And I noticed it doesn’t have to be the bright sunny warm days -any day is a good day to get out in nature !
When I’ve cut dow a tree I pile them into stacked pyramids and I buy mushrooms sprinkle it on the logs and gives great nutrients to the tree and bush roots… you’ll see the insanity the growth is crazy
Sean, This was great information about planting a food garden. That area is going to give back great. I don't garden anymore, but I did a lot of it in my day. It is good for the soul, even if it is container gardening, which I do now as it is easier on me. Take care of that back and heel of yours.❤
Thanks Sean. While watching this I checked out FL blueberries and companion plants which some of my favorite herbs are :D I must get this old girl out and planting :D
I have been gardening for years. I love the concept of a garden forest. I use raised beds. I start all of them with branches from trees, leaves, grass clippings. Layer some dirt and the top them off with good dirt. I have to refill them each year as the bottom layers start to compost and I love the process. I’m just starting with fruit trees this year.
@@Carolbearce I wish I could show photos,I am very lucky to have 5 beds 5m by 1m. We have chooks and use untanalised wood shavings as bedding-each year I leave 1 bed empty and fill with dirty bedding so I am using a whole rotation. Chooks get weeds and vegetable scraps, and I get garden bed renewal
Sean have you considered creating a Hügelkultur (Hugo mound) which would re purpose a lot of your wood and compostable bits and pieces. I built one this year which I’ve grown pumpkins and tomatoes in it has done really well and by next spring it should have rotted down nicely 😊x
My husband loved watching things grow. Gee had blueberries, and always used wood ash around them. He shared them with the black bears and birds! Your garden will be beautiful! How are you enjoying your garden sitting area? Raspberries are invasive, so give those plenty of room! You will enjoy watching it all grow, and enjoy the fruits of your labor!! Love from Pennsylvania, USA 💕🌷🐻
Food forests are a wonderful way to garden. My mum taught permaculture for years. The only thing I would say is it's a good idea to keep thorned plants towards perimeters....one as a natural barrier, but two you don't want it somewhere that will make harvesting the other crops hazardous
Great ideas to prep the garden for winter and next spring :) love the food forest ideas :) Let's help Sean get to 100K viewers :) and subscribe and ring the bell :)
Looks like Eden, Hercules. Lovely. Loved listening to your gentle tone and dandy ideas. You are magical, and definitely in your element, anywhere, outside, in nature. Look at you. We are all your students, captured by every word. A real teacher, you inspire each of us!!
I did a Workaway on a finca in España about 5 years ago. The aduano was a Brit who live in the Amazon in NW Brazil. He lived with indígenas farmers and learned about how plants live and thrive symbioticly. He brought the things he learned back to España and applied them to his garden. I'm no farmer or gardener but I'm not stupid and well educated in the sciences. The great thing was how well everything grew and AND NO weeds.
I save tomato seeds by scraping the seeds onto a piece of kitchen paper rip another square off and put it on top like a sandwich. Press together then put on a shelf in a room you are living in that is warm and dry. When the paper is dry put it in an evelope to store and write the type and date on. To use cut paper into squares in stamp size and plant them in a tray of soil for seedlings in the greenhouse. Though being in Australia I just poke them under the soil. "My father's coment on visiting here from UK was. You could stick a pencil in the ground here and it would grow" I have always been no dig even before I got to 80 yrs old.
A teaser of what is to come! Beautiful episode! I totally loved this! Use your leaves as mulch around plants. Be well, stay safe all. Eager to watch plants develope!😊❤👍🥰🎉
Rabbits are cute; but I’ll tell ya !!! We don’t have wild rabbits we just had a couple of pet bunnies - But don’t let them run the yard ! As soon discovered that there are some plants and vegetables that they don’t like - And others that they not only nibble on -they eat them right to the ground ! I sprinkled blood meal on everything, and that kept them away from the entire garden ; The problem was the blood meal only lasted a few days and it was quite expensive. Sadly, the bunnies passed away -we still have their beautiful house and bunny run- but I’m still debating !!!
Great work Sean, I battle with wallabies, paddymelons, possums and wild rabbits, then on top of that the really heavy frosts, so I’m struggling to keep any type of garden at the moment 😕
Try to find a local coffee shop to get their used coffee grounds, great soil enhancers for the garden, and compost bins. Plus, are there any mushroom growers in your area? They frequently change out their growing soil, which is usually organic. Start a small worm farm. They are GREAT composters. Plus, they eliminate almost ALL your degradeable household garbage, except citrus, onions, bread, and meat. I used to add cardboard and shredded paper products to mine to help absorb moisture in their containers, but they decomposed it so fast I could hardly keep up. Worm castings, rabbit pellets, and used coffee grounds make great soil medium. NEVER put pineapple on your compost piles or worm farms, as that will kill the benificial worms.
We, my husband and I in our late 70’s, are still trying to learn how to plant vegetables for harvesting here in NC. We both come from “farming” families….but did we ever listen and learn? Evidently not! We had a good harvest of tomatoes, peas, squash last year….but not this one. We love watching all your vlogs….from gardening, renovating, and brocanting( is that even a word?) Enjoy all your videos.
Thanks for another great video, Sean! You have the BEST ideas! I do have a question for you - Will you be selling another wall calendar this year for 2025? I purchased your calendar last year and absolutely love it! The new year will be here before we know it.
Poppies would look nice. You're creating a beautiful property. I've grown potatoes from the peelings with eyes in. Good crop. They would grow well in the hump in the lawn.😊
I’ve been watching another channel & that gardener has been using grass from the neighbors cutting grass & straw used in a chicken coop as ground cover/mulch. The garden has been quite successful & this method is reusing what would have been discarded.
Go on line Sean and look up companion gardening or you can also gets books on the subject which also show you how to lay your gardens out, look in second hand shops, some of the older books are better than some of the new ones you can get today.
Only need to plant two of same type if there is not another within say 100ft (maybe neighbor has some planted except citrus, apicots, sour cherry, most peaches and I think tangerine. These are what are called self-fruitful. HTH😊
I grew black currents and raspberries I do wish I left more space around the black current bushes and put in maybe three so they can cross pollinate. It has grown new shoots off the old one… raspberry wish I chose a non thorny type as it’s vicious with its thorns
Once your tree leafs out and grows more side branches (trim the top in spring before bud break to promote side branches), you'll want to move your raspberries and new canes to a place with full sun, not shaded by the tree.
You mentioned in the last couple of days you haven't had success with blueberries. One thing I can tell you is you need to plant twice as much as what you think you need. The birds love them. The second thing is when trimming back trees you need to not take too much away at once. Also you have to cut the branch at the right angle. You can't just wake away. Hope that's helpful.
Blueberries and I aren’t friends either ! Next year, I’m going to try planting multiple bushes and see what happens ! Maybe I can outdo the squirrels and birds !!
Not sure about your gardening style. I grew up with cultivating the garde on a regular basis..hoeing a lot. When i got older i started raised bed gardening(lazy mans garden.) My husband did square ft gardening which resembles a little of what you do.

You’re lucky to have such rich looking soil and minimal rocks!

Really enjoying the change up on videos
That’s going to be a beautiful space when it’s all filled out.

It’s good to keep up the maintenance around the garden. Trim trees, weed, mow, etc. Love the Food forest concept
Thanks Sean. While watching this I checked out FL blueberries and companion plants which some of my favorite herbs are :D I must get this old girl out and planting :D
What a great idea Sean. I look forward to seeing this grow and flourish.
I have an old tool shed I was thinking of turning into a green house.....some day.
Enjoying the outside videos. 🌳🪴🍂🍁

I'm here for the hurdle fencing! Love to see you explain it. I've seen it done but you are good at explaining the process.

Sean, what a great idea it benefits everyone, enjoy your weekend.
Nature's way of growing in abundance 💚💛
Love the idea of the food forest Sean. But I would remove any unwanted weeds, your food needs the nutrients that the weeds are taking.
Last couple of years,I have saved seeds to grow own plants, toms, eggplant, capsicum, chillis, cucumbers, beans and peas
That’s a great idea ! Not only does it save money- but you can get your own organic seeds !!
@@nanad267 plus I often trade the extra plants for other things to grow
That is so true about gardening, iv solved the world's problems after weeding.
Great ideas to prep the garden for winter and next spring :) love the food forest ideas :) Let's help Sean get to 100K viewers :) and subscribe and ring the bell :)
So nice of you

It's time to put the gardens to bed for the winter here. We haven't had a hard freeze yet, but it's near.
All I can say is my Mom and Gran used to plant merigolds around their garden on the edges as that keeps the rabbits at bay.
Thanks I like the idea of the food forest 👍🏻

I like your idea about a food forest. One thing I do is top the tree that way it will stay love enough for me to get to the fruit. Have a great day.
One gardener said fruit tree branches should be cut like a wine glass. That's my hint for today. 😄😄👍🇦🇺
I've had great success with wild strawberries, spring onions and garlic.
No worries Wanda. That tree will thrive. Shaun you eat very well.
I was doing this on a small scale before I lost my garden. It is quite astonishing how the plot looks after itself. I like your recycled trowel!
Looking good!
In the winter we have a small hydroponic setup with a grow light for lettuce and herbs.
You have inspired me to start planning now. We have a lot of rabbits that I have to consider.
Rabbit pellets make GREAT fertilizer. Little time-release capsules.
Rabbits are cute; but I’ll tell ya !!!

Our rabbits are all wild and quite plentiful. Clever as can be too.

Self-sufficient Sean ❤🎉🎉🎉
My favorite job pruning 😅 xxxx

Your watering can is great. The only thing I can find in the USA is plastic which usually break in 3 weeks. Finishing harvesting my garden.

I purchased your calendar last year and absolutely love it! The new year will be here before we know it.
Thank you for purchasing the calendar, not sure if l have time this year 😀
@ I totally understand. Thank you for letting me know.
I learned a lot from you today.
What ive understood about fruit trees is to take the tops down and just snip the lower branchs for winter.
Poppies would look nice.
You're creating a beautiful property.
I've grown potatoes from the peelings with eyes in. Good crop.

Cherry wood would be nice for smoking meats. Maybe some slow cooked pork.
You could do with sharpening chain saw chain ❤
Interesting concept!❤

seann the onion bulbs be ¼ to ½ inch deep and 4 to 6 inches apart top part popping out if that helps good luck
Cherry trees should only be trimmed as sap rises in the spring to stop infection
I thought when you planted fruit trees you had to plant 2 at a time so they pollinate . Looking good Sean
Only need to plant two of same type if there is not another within say 100ft (maybe neighbor has some planted except citrus, apicots, sour cherry, most peaches and I think tangerine. These are what are called self-fruitful. HTH😊
Food forest. It’s a fascinating idea. Id have trouble because am pretty rigidly linear. Might be good for me to try though!

I grew black currents and raspberries I do wish I left more space around the black current bushes and put in maybe three so they can cross pollinate. It has grown new shoots off the old one… raspberry wish I chose a non thorny type as it’s vicious with its thorns
Sean how about some walking sticks?
Tell Sam hello

your bear root trees should stand in a bucket of water for 24 hours at least so roots get a good drink

I have some gardening advice. Never use a chainsaw at full stretch on your tiptoes over your head! Use a ladder or scaffold tower.
