  • On May 29th 2014, members of the Straus family, the Straus Historical Society, and Macy's Executive Staff gathered for the re-dedication of the Isidor and Ida Straus Memorial Plaque at the 34th Street Memorial Entrance of Macy's Herald Square.
This historic entrance, which had been closed off and shuttered from view for decades, housed two very special bronze memorial plaques mounted on each of the flanking sidewalls. One plaque commemorates Isidor and Ida Straus, who perished on the Titanic and was dedicated to the couple by grieving Macy's employees in 1913. The other honors all those Macy's employees who died in World War I.

How sad that after all the dedication, there is no picture of the plaque. Was it not an important part of the ceremony?

Hi Sue. Sorry for the very delayed response. I do apologize for not inserting a photograph of the plaque into this video. My editing skills were very limited at the time and the crowd inside the small vestibule was so large that I did not have a clear shot of the plaque in the video. If you are interested in seeing the plaque, please let me know. Thanks for your comment!

I have a copy of the 1st iteration of Sports Illustrated from 1936. Stuart Scheftel, grandson of Isidore Straus, was a major investor in the magazine and very quickly took over majority or possibly sole ownership. I'm going to sell my large collection of sports magazines soon, but before I do, I want to make a few poignant videos about the collection. If anyone from the Straus family or intimately connected to them has any interest in giving me some background info on Stuart, e.g. did he actually know Isidore, employed at Macy's etc, please feel free to reach out me. Thank you.

Gotta love those antique cameras with the LOUD "CRUNCH, CRUNCH" noise of the shutters LOL, geez, the world has gone digital time to get rid of those old mechanical cameras guys!

Hi there! Sorry for the delayed response. There were so many journalists and photographers at this event using professional cameras and the sound of the crowd and cameras was quite overwhelming. I apologize for the noise of the cameras and hope that the video was still of interest. If you have any questions, please let us know! Thanks for your comment!
