The opinion by Western media that the DeepSeek engineers had to innovate to minimize the effect of the chip ban is bogus. As an engineer you are always seeking ways to use less silicon and less energy when developing a superior product. To insinuate that the only reason the Chinese had to innovate is because of the chip ban is nonsense. What DeepSeek did is the normal course of development. The American AI companies didn't think of using the methodology the Chinese used because they are not as intelligent as the Chinese. All I hear from the Western press is pure copium.

It's not that China is trying to win any war. The consensus in China is that the US is the leader and China would like to work together. But the US wants to dominate and make everyone else kowtow to them. Think space station. So with all the sanctions and restrictions imposed by Uncle Sam, China has no choice but to be self sufficient and innovate. This is the context behind the China-US contest.
What is more stunning is the fact that DeepSeek is only a side project, achieved in a short amount of time with far far far less expenditure than the US tech companies do.
If this is possible in China, why not in the West?

@@guens01 the China consulate. My US passport says I was born in China. So they insisted they need to see my China passport. I have never seen it bc I came to the US as a 9 year old in 1983. And we’ve never been back so I’ve never asked my mom for it. She has no idea when she lost it. We’ve moved a few times, had our homes burglarized a few times bc NYC you know. So they had me fill out an investigation form in Chinese, which I had trouble writing bc I haven’t written Chinese in decades. Looked like a 5 year old writing lol. They supposedly sent that form to China for investigation. It asked for ID number and address in China, birth certificate etc, but we didn’t have any of that in 1975 when I was born!!

DeepSeek has completely destroyed Silicon Valley's hype bubble scam and monopolistic efforts. Here's an analogy. Silicon Valley closed source models are like a pizza vendor who is selling slices for $100 because there is nowhere else to buy food of any kind. People are starving and have no choice but to pay the extortionary prices. Here comes along a new pizza parlor selling better tasting slices for $3. Also since it's open source, customers can simply go home and bake their own pizza with the recipe the new parlor is giving away for free. As you can imagine, the owners of the $100 slice are upset and their business is ruined. All of their customers are now gone along with their leverage they exerted over them. Power has been spread to the many customers and snatched from the extortioners.

China's innovation ecosystem is completely different from the USA and the West. The USA depends on IP and monopolistic mega companies that buy up all the politicians with bribes and insider information. The USA has legalized corruption.
On the other hand, China competes on the basis of price and quality competition. Chinese companies compete on the basis of execution. Almost all technology and supply chains are shared. Whoever can take these same inputs and resources to make the best products that appeals to the most customers wins.
The most important thing is it is open source. If it is not open source, the impact will not that big. Many people who do not understand about programming made funny and stup1d comments about DeepSeek.
Deep Seek is a fair game, but not Open AI.

You forgot to mention the two Chinese 6th generation aircraft release which made a buzz.
if a single corporation like Apple can create their own chips and move away from Intel dependency, then it is stupid to assume a country as large as China cannot also produce its own competitive hardware.
I have been using Deepseek and Gemini Advanced (paid) for my own personal use case and I utilise the best answer from the two. In around 80-90% of cases I much prefer the answer from Deepseek. Fundamentally it is more accurate and has far more "personality" . I don't know how but it seems to be able to generate a more creative, humerous idea in my writing uses. Gemini is like a formal guy in a suit giving a boring response and Deepseek is like the clever funny guy chilling out at the pool with a cool drink. Sure Gemini is quick but I want great answers to my questions.
