    thanks for the info. I personally rebuild all my 21700 power tool batteries with samsung 21700 50s cells. the samsung 21700 50s are the best cells in my opinion. High capacity with a high discharge rate.

      Interesting, no tool manufacturer touches the 5ah 21700 cells. We know from multiple tests that in terms of power output, 3ah 21700 > 4ah 21700. Wonder why no power tool company will use the 50s. Maybe it's not durable enough, like the 30q.

    • @riceball777
      @riceball777 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Factoryseconds123 the 30q is in lots of power tool batteries. All of the milwaukee m12 6.0ah batteries are make with samsung 30q batteries. Same goes with the m12 3.0 compact and the ryobi 18 volt 6.0ah and the 9.0ah are all made with samsung 30q or sony vtc6 cells. Also these power tool companies have to work within a budget. The best 21700 cells on the market are the samsung 50s and the molicell p45b. Also these 2 cells are relative new and only been out less than 1 year. prior to the release of these two 21700 cells he most powerful in terms of discharge was the samsung 30t but of course the capacity sucks. All all the 5ah 21700 cells only had a 10-15 amp discharge rate which is way too weak for power tools. Now the molicell p45b has already been proven to be more powerfull than a samsung 30t and with a 4500 mah capacity. Plus the new samsung 21700 50s had 5000mah of capacity with a 25amo discharge rate. not as strong as the 30t but still good enough for power tools.

    That interesting. I have many dewalt battery's. I even have the 10 Ah 20V not shown. works super for me. getting more power to the tool is not a big deal for my use. run time is more important for me. what data I am looking for is the cycle life on power stack 5 Ah compared to XR 5 AH 20V . as a electrician the tools I use the most do not load the battery much. like LED lights and the small right angled drill. sometimes I drill a lot of small holes for romex cable. would like to see a test of new battery and cycle it. this will change from small load to high load.

    • @Tools-Tested
      @Tools-Tested  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was looking at getting the 10ah but haven't found a deal on one yet.
      Very good point, they are claiming 2x the life span with the new dewalt PS, hard to say if thats going to be the case without real world testing. But at least now the cells are designed for the application.

  • @toolscientist
    @toolscientist ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The 5ah powerstack is interesting. Looks like 6 parallel mosfets to isolate the battery. I wonder if that's to give it a higher low-voltage cut-off or a lower max charge voltage to prolong cycle life? I would have thought they could just manipulate the T or ID pin to get the same effect. Maybe it's a current limiter. You could measure the max and min voltage of the 5ah PS and compare it to other batteries to see if it does have a different voltage range.
    Measure the voltage on the ID and T pin when it's running - I bet it's fairly easy to trick the battery into thinking it's connected.

    Heck yeah I found it useful. Battery upgrade time, when you run DeWey, is a confusing time.
    I found out he other day (from you, actually...comment on this is below) that my 5Xrs are fakes and that told me I was leaving a lot of potential on the table for all of my smaller tools. So, I did what any fool with money does, and I went to Lowes, and I paid Big Box off the shelf price and I replaced all of my 5XRs with 5PSs. It wasn't cheap, but I was done fooling with this issue and wanted it solved.
    But then I got to thinking "what about the bigger tools? What about the ones that I run on the 10XR and the 8XR? How good ARE these PSs. Can I run my circ saw or my grinder with them as well?"
    Without pausing your charts, putting on my reading glasses and studying your numbers...I would never have been certain I was getting the best out of the bigger tools with the 5PSs slapped in. But your charts show that they absolutely WILL do the job of my 10 and 8 XR so...
    ...yeah, thanks for doing all of this work.

    Alright buddy, it's on YOU now.
    I was doing just fine, innocently minding my own business. For my smaller tools, I had a couple of XR 5ah batteries, and a couple of non XR 3ah's, in case I needed to keep them running while the 5's were both on the charger. I was carefree, blissfully not knowing any better...and then your outer video happened.
    You caused me to go out to the garage, open up my 5Ahs and find out that they are fakes. Mind you now, I do not work for DeWalt and I do not own any B&D stock, so I would not care one ounce that my batteries were counterfeit if I could expect the same performance. But you could not even leave me with that. You and your thermometers and output readers...you showed me that your fake (identical to mine, right down to the same exact date code) gives out lesser performance.
    So I said "self, you handsome devil, let's just do all of the crying at once, solve this problem for the long haul and be done with it). Mind you , saving money is a habit, left over from when I was young and poor. At my present age, I can be convinced to dig a little deeper when I need to. So I did. I replaced my two counterfeits and my two non XR backups alike, with 600 bones worth of four 5Ah Powerstack (which will upset me further as I watch the price on them come down in a year). If they suck when they get here, I am blaming you!
    Now, I also have an 8 and a 10, for my bigger tools. If I find out THOSE are fakes too...I very well may respond to my battery shelf with my firearm.

    • @Tools-Tested
      @Tools-Tested  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah it's crazy how much the fakes look real until you open them up.
      Don't worry your no the only one lol. Seems like 90% of the 5ah on eBay are the fakes.
      The 5ah PS are defiantly over priced and will probably come down at some point. Buying the 2 pack is the better deal. But they do give a boost in performance from the tests on the drill dyno.

    I'm really surprised the 6ah flexvolt still uses 18650 when the 9 and 12 flexvolt are 21700 now. Even the 6ah and 8ah XR packs use the newer cells. The performance difference seems to show in your test.

    • @Tools-Tested
      @Tools-Tested  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah kinda crazy

    • @samuelrubio4435
      @samuelrubio4435 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep, definitely unfortunate. Unfortunately, for flex-volt to work you need the number of cells to be some multiple of 15 to reach 60 volts. 60volts / 4v = 15 cells in series. This is why the 6Ah, 9Ah, and 12Ah all have 15 cells and why the 15ah has 30 cells. The 6ah battery is only 6Ah in 20v mode. In 60volt mode it is only 2ah. (6Ah x 20V) / 60V = 2Ah. This means that to create a flex-volt 6ah battery you need 15 x 2Ah cells. Unfortunately, 2Ah 21700 cells, to my knowledge, don’t exist. This leaves 18650 cells as the only option. Battery manufacturers are unlikely to ever produce 2Ah 21700 cells. The energy density would be worse than nearly all current 18650, so there would be essentially no buyers other than DeWalt for this a single, niche battery. It is for this reason a 6ah flex volt with 21700 cell will likely never be produced.

    • @loucifer4205
      @loucifer4205 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The thing is 18650 cells configured 3 rolls have the same power as a 2 roll 21700 so I would get the flexvolt 6amp over the 6amp xr

    Strange that they didn't use Samsung 50S on the 15Ah so they could just do 15 cells...but 20S's are quite the bangers and the 50S couldn't really touch that the 20S's in terms of power

      No, the 8ah is the same size as the 6ah battery.

    Are there any visual exterior differences between the old and new 5ah? I'm not even sure which one I have.

      Hard to explain but the new's decals are the full length on the side vs the old version the decal stops about an inch from the edge. Sorry its hard to explain.

      @@Tools-Tested Oh really? I thought that was the old one. Were did you manage to find one anyway?
      And is the new 4ah the same story?
      Edit: I noticed now that the font on the new battery matches that of the recent 15ah.

      I missed that one, 10ah is rare and has a high failure rate.

    Great vid sir.
    Hey I’ve got a question..
    I just bought 4 generic Dewalt type 20v batteries on Amazon last week and they claim that they are
    6 AH. So I held one up to an actual Dewalt 6 AH that I have and quickly realized these generic ones are not the same size as a real Dewalt 6 AH battery. They are however the same size as a 4 and 5 amp hour battery.
    My question is, is there any chance in hell that these generic ones could actually be real 6 amp hour batteries?
    I even weighed them
    And a real Dewalt 6 AH is 99 oz. A real Dewalt 4 and 5 amp hour battery are 60 oz. These generic ones are 58 ounces.
    So what do ya think on this?

      Thanks!
      From my testing of generic battery's its usually 1-3AH less vs what the label says. Also they seem to have a higher voltage drop vs the OEM packs which normally = less performance out of the tool.
      I tested a Generic m12 9AH on the drill dyno and found the performance similar to a 3AH CP not even a XC pack. I still need to do a runtime test with the 9ah on the load cell but I'm expecting something similar to 6ah runtime.

      @@Tools-Tested yeah I pulled one apart tonight and they used 10 of the 18650 cells, vs what a real Dewalt 6AH battery uses which is 10 of the 20700 cells.
      I’m a little bit pissed about this. And I am going to make a stink about this with Amazon. I will point out the information i just listed, along with pictures I took of the cells used in these knock off batteries. This is false advertisement, misinformation is a good term used in this day and age, a term that always seems to get everyone’s attention. 😀
      It’s misleading consumers.
      I’m in my 50’s and I can remember a time when false advertising was kind of a big deal. Those Chinese manufacturers need to stop putting 6 amp hours on their batteries if they aren’t 6 amp hours. So we’ll see what happens this week with it. I’m not sending them back either. I’m holding onto them as evidence.
      I’ll contact the better business bureau, consumer affairs, etc. this needs to stop, because they’re all doing it. Meaning all the knock off sellers are listing them like this.
