This song single-handedly changed the face of music when it came out. It was more than a vibe, it was a whole culture. Also, this song is responsible for killing off an entire era of music of '80s hair bands and paving the way to the Grunge era. It's a very important song in music history and "Nevermind" is one of the greatest albums of all time.
I don’t know. Use Your Illusion came out the same year as Nevermind and they’re both iconic albums. Good old hair metal had a bit of life left in it in 1991! In fact, when I first heard “Teen Spirit” on the radio, and before I’d even seen what the Nirvana band members looked like, I thought they were just another California hair metal band. The screaming and heavy distortion was definitely 80’s metal-esque but Nirvana added their own twist to it
It boggles the mind if you have never heard Smells Like Teen Spirit. When you talk about that whisper-to-a-scream dynamic, Kurt was hugely influenced by The Pixies who were the masters of that style. Most of the Pixies best-known songs are actually much slower like "Where is My Mind?" "and "Here Comes Your Man", but they had a lot of headbangers like this on their records.
I know right? I thought she must be mistaken. That there was no possible way she hadn't heard it. But this is the new reality. We are "old" and being relegated to history, more and more with each passing day.
@@dialecticalmonist3405 Grrrr Just stay the course like Bowie and never grow old! She also said that she reacts to music that she normally wouldn't listen to, but she seems to love RHCP, Linkin Park, Nirvana, Journey, Metallica, and Chris Cornell, while disliking a lot of hip hop (Drake, Warren G,Cardy) except for Tupac and Eminem, so I can't figure out what she grew up listening to?
And the Pixies in turn were influenced by the beatles, although Kurt at one point said that he also was influenced by the Beatles. He hung out in my hometown some, and I met him, but I didn't really hang out with him, all the a couple people I know did and also they played here and it was a crazy show. There's a lot of connection with him here.

This song and the album this song came from killed the 80's hair metal/hair rock era for good. People were tired of it. And this blew up literally not just in the usa but internationally also. This started the major grunge era of 1991-1995.
One of the top 5 most important songs in Rock history! I'm not the biggest fan of Nirvana, but you cannot deny how important Kurt Cobain was. (Courtney did it)
Yeah Kurt Cobain (the lead singer) was to Heavy Mental what Tupac was to Hip Hop. They were both were the most famous people in their fields of music in the early to mid 90s. I remember coming home from school watching BET Rap City and Yo MTV raps but sometimes I would watch MTV Rocks and he and his band was number 1. They was the most requested band out of all of the bands in the 90s. Like I said I think the 90s was the Apex of music of all genres. Great reaction!
Are you doing my playlist today? First, Linkin Park, and now, Nirvana. Love it. The drummer is the Foo Fighters' lead singer. That tells you how talented this band was. You can pick the next Nirvana song out of a hat and not go wrong.
Nirvana and Kurt were responsible for ending the stereotypical 70s and 80s sounding and look of rock with their grunge style. They made rock modern and cool.
Yeah Kurt was great, but ppl like this guy, and Neil Young, and others were doing this stuff decades before Nevermind th-cam.com/video/zo0vBdlWQs0/w-d-xo.html
I was still in grade school when this song and album were released. By the time I was in middle school it was one of the most popular songs that defined my childhood. Definitely one of the top 100 American rock songs.
The first time I heard this song on the radio, my music taste shifted. I had liked heavy metal before this, but I heard this and knew it was for me! I am sure someone else said this already, but the drummer in Nirvana is the singer for Foo Fighters. ❤
The first big GRUNGE song, and it really captures the vibe well. I've got a test for you - Righteous Brothers "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" this will prove once and for all whether you like love songs or not.
Game changer. Glad we were able to hear him even if it was only for a minute. Rock had to redefine itself to a new generation. That is the Foo Fighters lead singer Dave Grohl on the drums. Foo Fighters - Best of You, All My Life. Nirvana - In Bloom, The Man Who Sold The World
Nirvana was the reason I got into alternative music as a young kid. I remember hearing them for the first time in 1995 when I was 9 from a cousin. They will forever be a benchmark for music, not only for myself but for any kid who enjoys this music. And Kurt would be rolling in his grave hearing you say this isn’t “head banging music” da fuq 😂
Nirvana, Aneurysm Live at the Paramount! Aneurysm is peak Nirvana: ferocious drums, screaming distortion, high energy live performance. It's Teen Spirit x 2.
That is the inimitable Dave Grohl on drums there, and once Kurt offed himself, he started the Foo Fighters, who really did some cool stuff and had good success. Not to mention that Dave turns out to be ultra fucking cool. ❤
This song was everywhere in the 90s!!! Love the energy in the vocals, the guitar and the drums. Shout out to the late Kurt Cobain and Nirvana for oblierating a whole genre out of existence😅😅🕊️🤟🏿
I always felt like cobaine had such a unique talent he’s another gone to soon R.I.P. I always felt like he had such deep content lyricly and I felt like he had an old soul but Nirvana is Dope !!!!
So happy that you have entered the world of Nirvana, Mia. They are quintessential 90s. And this is probably their best, most loved track. You should also listen and react to the cover version of this song by Tori Amos. She completely reimagined it as a slower paced, piano oriented track as only she could do. It is quite beautiful to listen to.
The song that started the whole grunge era! Every time I hear it, it still brings me back to being in my dorm room as a freshman in college when I first heard it.
Me encantan tus reacciones. Está de Nirvana estuvo Súper. Nirvana tiene uno de los mejores albumes de todos los tiempos."Nevermind" cualquier canción de ese album te va gustar seguro. Un abrazo.
In 1990, Nirvana were a little-known indie rock trio from Olympia, Washington w/ 1 album 'Bleach'... Little did they know that the following year, they would become like The Beatles... To review: the rock bands in 1990 that were commercially successful had big hair... guitar solos... high vocals... and fashion sense w/ bands like Firehouse, Enuff Z'nuff, Trixter, Slaughter, Bon Jovi, etc. and thrash metal bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax... were coming up fast but there was change in the air by 1991... Album sales and concert ticket sales were starting to drop. In 1991, Nirvana hired Dave Grohl (drums) and began recording their 2nd album 'Nevermind' w/ producer Butch Vig... the band demanded full creative control but were paid very little in terms of an advance... Once the album was recorded in California, Nirvana returned to playing shows and they decided that the album's opening song 'Smells like teen spirit'... would be the first single. Nirvana did a show and scheduled a music video shoot in a school gym afterwards, w/ their audience from the show following the band there... They hired local strippers to pose as high school cheerleaders w/ pom-poms and when the song 'Smells like teen spirit' was played, the fans went berserk and wrecked the set as Nirvana motioned through the song during the shoot. It was a cheap video overall... By the time 'Nevermind' was released in the Fall of '91, Nirvana's frontman Kurt Cobain was broke... he and girlfriend (later wife) Courtney Love were evicted from their apartment in Seattle and moved in w/ drummer Dave Grohl... 'Smells like teen spirit' was aired on MTV and exploded in popularity... Radio picked up the single and Nirvana became a sensation overnight. Dave Grohl recalled it was surreal watching TV and seeing Kurt in the music video, while Kurt was sitting on his couch in his apartment. Nirvana went to Europe to play a few gigs and when they returned in November of 1991, they were told that 'Nevermind' was the #1 album in the USA and Nirvana was a sensation. In 1992, fellow Seattle bands like Pearl Jam... Soundgarden ... and Alice in Chains... all had platinum records that year and the press dubbed the new sound 'grunge rock' in the 90's decade. The unfortunate consequence was that MTV began shedding 80's artists from airplay in the early 90's and radio stations did the same... Rock radio DJ and host Eddie Trunk recalled his station manager handing over a box of CD's and declaring that these artists would be excluded from airplay from that point on... Established and promising bands like Saigon Kick, Dio, Poison, Kiss, Lynch Mob, Bang Tango, Scorpions, Firehouse, Extreme, Dream Theater... all saw their commercial airplay cease entirely and record labels pulled funding from rock bands on tour, ending the 80's rock era and ushering new bands like - Stone Temple Pilots... Smashing Pumpkins... Tool... Rage Against the Machine ... Jane's Addiction... etc.
YES! I remember the first time I heard this song and how I felt. It was a musical awakening. Suddenly everyone cared about Seattle, loud Rock snd being moody. *Flips hair* 😂 ❤

My most vivid memory of college--- was the fall of 1991, when I first bought a copy of Nirvana's "Nevermind." (Cassette, yo!) I thought: This seriously rocks; this is indeed a pretty great album--- but it'll probably just make some decent ripples; it'll do okay on, like, indie radio. In less that a week--- it was *ALL ANYBODY* was listening to. :D You'd walk down a dorm-room hallway (people with their doors open), and one room would be playing "Breed"; one room would be playing "In Bloom"; one room would be playing this song (and so forth). People who'd never listened to any punk--- or post-punk--- bought this album. (So, yeah, don't take me to Vegas. :D) All my '90s memories from that point on--- are fuzzy...
Grunge rockers unite! If you like this band you would also like stuff by The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr. Or Sonic Youth. But by FAR this was the classic. It set the tone for the music scene for the next 10 years. Easily! Thank you for your reaction!

Oh and please check out a band called Candle Box it's a very under rated band from this era! Maybe start with 1 of these 3 "Far behind" "You" or "Cover Me" thnx dear and stay beautiful!
love that you are taking a look at this. this was not the band for me, like it was others, but it led me to Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and Pearl JAM. Then Audioslave, and Foo Fighters. They reaLLy opened a door. thank you as always for this.
I wouldn't necessarily have taken you for a punk rock chick, but there you go. My mistake. :) Nirvana and Teen Spirit was when the alternative music movement, born out of the punk rock movement, finally cleared the table and reached the top of the world, with a vengeance. Words cannot accurately describe what it was like to experience this in realtime. Like an abrupt wake-up call, or a rain storm that washed away all the fake ass wannabe rock stars. It was a clear signal to everyone: The 90s are here, and it's going to be TOTALLY different. The quiet-LOUD-quiet aesthetic - (yeah, critics coined that: chill verses, super loud choruses) - became very typical of the early 90s after this song broke into pop culture. But it was actually pioneered by one of Kurt's favourite bands, The Pixies, who made somewhat similar music and influenced countless bands in the late 80s.
I still remember the news when Curt died "murdered", our whole school was in mourning. As a 90's teen this hit hard for a lot of us. We grew up on grunge bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Temple of The Dog, Seven Mary Three, Hole, Veruka Salt, and many many others. Take a deep dive down the 90's grunge hole, and I'll bet you'll find some real bangers you'd enjoy.
Hi Mia, Nirvana was a great band but first RIP Kurt 2/20/1967 - 4/5/1994🙏 I'm a musician and have been since I was 15 and Kurt liked the Loud/quiet method when writing a song, he also liked the Beatles (especially John Lennon )
Love this song, this album was one of the first CDs I bought myself after years of listening to my older sister’s big music library because she bought almost every good album and listened to all kinds of different genres but got behind in the early 90’s so I bought this album first, and Kurt was a voice of later Gen X and early Millennials or Xennials since we connect with Gen X too , of the kids who grew up with the divorce rate being 50% and actually talking about domestic abuse
Headbanging? Try Rock Bottom live by UFO from their classic Strangers in the Night: Live. Utter classic, an apex performance in Hard Rock History. You will love this band if you give them a chance, Lovely Mia, these guys will blow you away! Enjoy. 🔥🎸
Mia baby!🙂↔️🤌🏽It was "Come as you Are" was really yr first vid which as awesome reaction by the way your expressions heartwarming 😊 👏🏽💫🤭can't see when you do "Soundgarden" reactions their awesome and similar vibes to...👀 ooh Mia one more thing make sure your camera playing on track cuz some your vids your footage isn't syncing when your playing vids. Just letting you know goodbye 💜
RIP Kurt a true legend gone way too soon if Nirvana was to get back together I'd love to see Shaun Morgan of Seether front the band he sounds somewhat similar to Kurt & he'd be the perfect fit for the band btw u should definitely check out Seether Mia theyre amazing songs like Remedy Driven Under Gasoline Truth My Disaster Let You Down Words As Weapons theyre a badass grunge band from South Africa. Beautiful as always Mia u look amazing 😍🥰❤️💚🧡💙💘💕💞💓🖤💕🌹🌹🌹
Please, some SoundGarden with Chris Cornell. The Lead singer was nominated for something like 18 Grammy awards and won three. Soundgarden was part of that Seattle Grunge scene as well and actually had started in the mid 80's before breaking through in the 90's. If you love Sick Drums, hard and driving bass, and vocals that can shred at all levels of the sound range, youll probably like to add them to your work out track.
Not sure if you heard of the foo fighters Mia but the drummer for Nirvana is David Grohl lead singer of the foo fighters Very good band. Check out learning to fly. Great song
Our little group has always been, and always will until the end and still is...set your watch to timeless. I had something else profound to say about this. Oh well, whatever...NeVeRmInD.
Most important song of the last 50 years. It changed everything. And Kurt was murdered. Don't fall for the lies. Thanks for the reaction mi Mia Some time possibly discover Weird Al Jankovic. He is talented and brilliant. You might really enjoy "Smells Like Nirvana"
So I just found your channel and I have to say, I am really impressed with your take on music. The first video I saw you react to was Zombie by the Cranberries. I realize you are too young to remember the history of Northern Ireland, but at the time of that filming, those were actual soldiers patrolling the streets of Belfast during the height of the conflict. Anyway, I look forward to watching more of your content and keep up the great work.
I love this song, and I know Kurt said the lyrics didn’t mean anything but I know he was a fan of the Decayed poets and find metaphors of decayed poetry in the lyrics and think it actually does mean something
As someone said in the comments this song pretty much killed 80's hair bands lol Grunge music and gangsta rap were king. When I first heard Smells like teen spirit I was blown away. Kurt Cobain's voice was just so unique. Every song on that album was a masterpiece.
Look at Mia. 9:33 she's about to jump in the crowd, get carried then go wild in the mosh pit. 😂 "In Bloom" and "Drain You" are other bangers from this same second album.
Mia, my dear.... you are asleep. Your mind has not been awakened to rock until you've experienced Led Zeppelin. "Whole Lotta Love, Black Dog, Kashmir".... just so many hits to count. They laid the foundation.

Finally, u got to it! The song that started it ALL!!!
Game changing music, a gigantic MTV hit, a signature song in the Grunge era, Nirvana was dope, too bad about Curt, RIP. 🎸
Another amazing reaction Ms Mia ❤
When this song was released in 1991, the whole 80s glam metal scene faded away. Grunge was suddenly everywhere.
It didn't fade away it got stomped on like Godzilla annihilation in an instant
@kperry1969 lol That actually sounds just cooler but we meant the same. Some bands has survived, but not many.
Love it Mia , I love your honest thoughts!
The anthem of a disenfranchised generation right here!
Mia likes grunge. waiting for the flannel outfit.
Happy “grunging”. Epic song. Lovely reaction.
I always considered this on the Alternative side of music. To me this is thee Nirvana song. Perfection
Love the video Mia stay motivated Dream big 1 mill on the way
THE anthem of the generation that doesn't need an anthem at all (Gen. X).
Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) was, as well as Club 27.
This is the song that prompted Russell Crowe in Gladiator to ask the question: "Are you not entertained?!"
I don’t usually like rock but for some reason I like this song.😍🎶
Weird Al Parody is just as good.
You should do a reaction to The Cure: Fascination Street
Nirvana was iconic
Headbanging? Try Rock Bottom live by UFO from their classic Strangers in the Night: Live. Utter classic, an apex performance in Hard Rock History. You will love this band if you give them a chance, Lovely Mia, these guys will blow you away! Enjoy. 🔥🎸
I’m worst at what I do best and for this gift I feel blessed

I dont even listen to rock or grunge but this defiently was part of the soundtrack to my early high school years
Please, some SoundGarden with Chris Cornell.
Aneurysm, Territorial Pissings, Breed. Negative Creep for some more energy
This song was ahead of its time
Check out “Heart Shaped Box” also.
Most important song of the last 50 years. It changed everything.
And Kurt was murdered. Don't fall for the lies.
Thanks for the reaction mi Mia
Some time possibly discover Weird Al Jankovic. He is talented and brilliant. You might really enjoy "Smells Like Nirvana"
Happy you liked the guitar solo
Nirvana cool this is an awesome song by them
So I just found your channel and I have to say, I am really impressed with your take on music.
Mia, how have you not heard this song??? This is Granddaddy Grunge!!!
Straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Being with you would make me reach Nirvana
Wooooo!!! 🤘🤘
If you want some other dope Nirvana songs, check out In Bloom, Lithium and Sliver, all of them have music videos
Great song to workout to
Pink floyd the great gig in the sky please
Gotta do the unplugged where did you sleep last night
Mia, my dear.... you are asleep. Your mind has not been awakened to rock until you've experienced Led Zeppelin. "Whole Lotta Love, Black Dog, Kashmir".... just so many hits to count. They laid the foundation.
Maybe Mia isn't ready for Led Zeppelin yet. Songs like "Whole Lotta Love" or "Since I've Been Loving You" are just too sexy for miss Mia?
Chef's kiss is right Mia!
Lithium is my favorite Nirvana song
