- On this episode we are on the Mountain Roo WA Yeagarup trip, attempting to climb Callcup hill
Callcup is one of the longest, softest sand climbs in Australia and is sometimes locally called "the widow maker" as it either cooks motors, kills transmissions or vehicles simply cannot make it up the soft sand.
Made it first go: All Dual Range Manuals
2x NA SGs
NA SH
2 door import EJ powered NA MY
Took 2 or more goes :
Dual range MY (almost made it first go)
H6 5EAT outback
Single range SG XT
Did not make the climb:
SJ CVT XT
SH NA 5EAT
Vehicle has custom gearbox with Cusco Front LSD, 4.44 diffs, 1.59 low range, DCCD and rear ARB air locker.
See the below link for project write-up of the diff lock.

Glad to see the blue hatch is still around!
Didn't expect to see Hatchie on this channel! Love it.
Just had another group from MTNROO WA come bthrough Yeagarup and Calcup last month. We crossed the river on the beach at the literal water's edge and glad to report all cars made it up the hill. We had an SG XT 4EAT (me), SG XT with ADS dual range, 2 SH XT single ranges (one pushing 200atwk) and a Jimny with us that had a lot of grief which was mostly attributed to a poor deflator gauge but eventually made it up the last hill unassisted. It's a great challenge but the right tyre pressure makes it or breaks it!
Sounds like an adventure. Pity I missed the trip!
Good old Hatchie!
Love it mate, looks like loads of fun !!! keep up the awesome videos !!!
Subaxtreme team
This looks like a lot of fun! Bit of a shame that I never made it here to give it a go while I was in WA... I'll have to come back again 🚙💨 what pressure did drop the tyres down to?
I think most people were down around 10psi. It's a good climb but not actually that hard. You would have had no problem at all. Bornholm was far more difficult!
moral of the story is get a good tires, a red subaru and a camera. good job guys!
Cheers! To be honest the red Subaru that is less modified probably did it the easiest out of all the vehicles and it has road tyres. On sand road tyres are all you need.
This is the best!
Love it!
Honestly my Outback completely exceeds the expectation. I took the brand new stock Outback to the Bribie Island Queesland. The sand was quite dry. It went pretty well. The only problem I had was the sand in the engine bay. The access to the beach has lots of shell craters. But it did it fairly well.
Yeah they are surprisingly capable cars stock, particularly with a good driver. Confuses a lot of people when you get through where everyone expects you to get stuck!
Great vid mate! I am thinking of paying a visit in my 2022 Outback Touring see how it goes. How did - SJ CVT XT, SH NA 5EAT get off the beach/dunes if they didn't make the climb up? is there chicken track/exit out?
Cheers! Yeah there is an exit to the east called summer time track. A couple of small creek crossings on the way so your best bet would be come in summertime track and try go up calcup. If you fail you know you have a passable way out.
no suabarus were killed in the making of this maybe donut media and the boys should take notes
Haha. Good old donut media...
Shame Subaru did away with the dual range :/
Yeah agree 100%
Hey mate, what model is “Hatchy”?
That's a good question! I think it's an early 80s Subaru that was never sold in Australia. This one was of a handfull ever imported and I believe was 2wd when it arrived. Since then it has been rather heavily modified 😂. But don't hold me to any of this... Either way, it is a very unique car!
It's a 1983 Subaru Leone hatchback. This particular one was white and 2WD when imported, and has changed a bit since :)
Probably not so well known in Australia as they were a private import, and definitely a lot of Subaru enthusiasts today are completely unaware. This chassis had 5 body styles, hatch, hardtop coupe, four door sedan, wagon and utility (aka Brumby).
How do you reckon a XT SH auto would go vs a 2.5 SH dual range?
I think any XT should have no dramas at all. The CVT did seem to struggle which was not helped by the fact their rims were too wide for their tyres so they couldn't let them down far enough.
what front bar do you use for your subaru forester
The red and black Forester has a custom made one. The red Forester has a subaxtreme bar
Can you please tell me what that song is at 2min 30sec
It's called Early Avril by Unicorn Heads. It can be found in the TH-cam Music Library.
