    Your machines at your shop and at home are impressive. My favorite saying is “Why do machinists do what they do is because we can.”

    Great videos! I've come across your videos and haven't stopped watch yet! Hahaha These are addicting. I've been a Machinist for 10 years now in NW Houston, and as a child, I grew up in my grandfather's basement, which your garage reminds me of, only more modern machines. I've worked for Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Weatherford, and VAM USA. Epic set-up (Man Cave) you've created!

    Thanks for the video Peter. You are very creative in setting up your shop and solving the various problems associated with having machines in a garage shop. As always with your videos there is always something to learn from how you do what you do.

    This is genius and impressive. Especially the little folding edge that sits on the support that allows the garage to open which will only reveal a wall. Awesome. Kudos

    I watched this video a while back, enjoyed watching again. I have a 40 x 60 shop and it's almost as crowded as yours. Great job making a good work space for yourself. Very well organized. It's your property , do whatever you want as long as it doesn't bother the neighbors. More power to you!
    God bless you: 😊

      Thanks. I have good relations with the neighbors and no one has complained. But it could be a deed violation. I took pains to sound proof the garage and not show any evidence that it is there.

    I did similar in my garage many many years ago. No restrictions, but a neighbor called County code enforcement and they deemed it industrial in a residential area. They forced me to remove all machines and tools or pay daily fees charged by the county.
    My other neighbors did home businesses including noisy routers/ wood working, auto repair, selling drugs, but guess that's all ok.
    Since then I've moved into a business park. Now rent out the house and moved to a new house. Sometimes doing honest hard work is .......

    Thats cool to know how much you can get into a tiny space. I like the idea of those heavy thick wall foam panels to keep noise down and keep the heat out. Its a major issue for me being in Oz, last week it hit 35C (95F) you just cant think at that temp. So will look at doing a window aircon unit and the panels. Plus sort out my air lines. Great sets of videos.

    I had to buy my own transformer to get three phase. I have a spancrete garage--a VF2ss "upstairs" and a doosan 220 lynx LSYC in the basement garage. Nobody would move it in for me--I rented a 12K pound all terrain for lift to move the lathe to the bottom garage, and rented skates to get it in......I hope I never have to move......my neighborhood isn't so fancy, but no out buildings, even though I'm on 2 acres.......love the vids, keep them coming!!!

    I love your little space, it's well thought out for such limited area. As for the subdivision, I will never buy a home in one with rules. I bought an older home with a half acre, county law, and no association. I strongly believe for my neighbors as well that your space is yours. Dream what you want to dream with it and make it so. Pretty home but not worth the loss in freedom and imagination.

      Thanks its nice to hear a encouraging comment. I am trying with my videos to show things that aren't being shown (as far as I can tell) on TH-cam. I know my content is more orientated to people who machine for a living not to the mas viewers. I would encourage people to comment good or bad so I can know better what to show. Some of this is kind of boring but if some one is trying to learn or just wants to know maybe it could help. There are very few TH-cam videos showing more commercial or not hobbyist (Please I'm not saying anything wrong with being a hobbyist) type of information. I guess they want to keep it to themselves.

    Amazing how responsible, successful adults have to "ask permission" from their "parents" i.e. neighbors to do what they want in/on their own property and have to be "sneaky" if their "parents" say no, isn't it?

    • @Peter-V_00
      @Peter-V_00 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree 100%, I keep a super low profile because some people have nothing better to do than mind everyone else's business, my shop is purely for myself and my channel subscribers/viewers but the normal automatic presumption is always to jump to a conclusion of something sinister like "making a living".
      Sorry for the rant but just as a point, when I was a kid in the 60's about 50% of the kids I went to school with Dad had a business and worked from home as a plumber, carpenter, electrician, etc, gradually that number has diminished, so much for "freedom to pursue happiness", especially if what you're doing doesn't impact anyone..

    Put a simple light duty rack with decoy tools like screwdrivers and bolt to your sliding wall. Use this as a handle to grab on when opening and closing so you do not leave fingerprints on the drywall.

      Randy Richard In The Shop thanks Randy. I'm going to try in the future to do more videos. This last year I just haven't had a lot of time to devote to making them. As you know it takes a lot of time to come up with ideas organize you shots edit and upload them. I also need a faster internet connection it takes so long to upload even a 10 minute video.

    • @meocats
      @meocats 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      leave it uploading over night. now if we're talking about hard-drive space that's a whole other animal, and might require a bigger hard-drive.

    • @EdgePrecision
      @EdgePrecision  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have done that with larger videos. I generally us a external solid state drive to store the video content. Than edit and produce that to the external drive run it thru Handbrake to reduce the size to about 2/3 and optimize it for TH-cam. Than drag it to the desktop for upload. I have found it takes longer to upload directly from the external drive for some reason.

    • @meocats
      @meocats 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it might be caching the video in ram as it reads it and perhaps you are low in ram. It should not be slower on an SSD.

    • @Neubcham
      @Neubcham 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming you're OS is running from a M.2 SSD and when you move a file to your desktop, it copies it. Transfer speeds to/from a M.2 are 3x as fast as a standard SSD. Especialy when compared to a external SSD. After reviewing your laptop specs, your bottle neck is most likely with the external SSD. Always use your USB 3.0 slots as well when doing large file transfers. I just finished my first PC build in July 2016. So, machining and computers go hand in hand LOL.

    Unbelievable i allways thought that the Gestapo and Co were here in Europe in the last century i never heard of a neighborhood that wouldn't allow to have a shop.. In my house i do what i want (within the laws) here is my kingdom and no neighbor has to speak a word what i do in my house... I would not stop laughing i paid it and my rules are in duty as long as I'm not too loud or it smells bad the neighbor has to accept that...

      I'm surprised he told us that to be honest. None of us on TH-cam needed to know. Then again, he already said it was his home garage shop, and to somebody whose job it is to care about some bylaw, happens to land on either one those videos, they can be a dick later, and force action if they wanted to bother with it. The way I see it, as long as the neighbours aren't complaining about noise. It's a non issue.

    • @tyhuffman5447
      @tyhuffman5447 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He may just assume there is a bylaw, he looks and acts the honest type. I'm sure if there were such a bylaw it would be an honest mistake. Maybe something like no home business, but this is clearly a hobby. I'm sure everyone here would agree that the only thing those machines are good for is as a play toy for an old machinist. They may appear impressive to a nosy neighbor but we all know that those are just play toys. Not that I would mind having a few play toys myself but only for hobby.

      Better to live in places without such onerous laws. When you own a property and they make so many rules that you can't use it as you see fit, do you really own it or do the rule-makers? And when you have to borrow 80% of the money to "buy" it, do you really own it or does the bank? Home ownership is a LIE if you live in a high - cost area with too many rules and no rights. Time to move.

    Like to know if the TL-1 can hold tenths. I often have some small parts that need a lathe that can repeat. Thanks and I've made pins with threads out of Inconel. Manual lathe. Fun. Spencer Tool and Grind llc

      Mark Spencer , I have been very impressed with this little lathe. I have turned parts and held tenths. I am running it on 230 volt single phase. It doesn't have tons of power on single phase. It also only turns 1800 RPM max. It would be nice to have more speed. All that being said I like the machine. It will thread at its maximum RPM without a problem. Look at my video on the GoPro mount. 1/4-20 thread at 1800 rpm into a small thread relief/shoulder no problem. ID threads to a shoulder no problem.

      The current shop I am employed at has one for doing mold cores. Yes it can hold tenths, but you need to take light cuts. Our tooling situation could be much better, which would help for speeds and feeds. Set up your machine with good tooling. The only weakness I have found is thermal stability, AC makes a huge difference.

    What model of air dryer is that you have of the wall there? Looks like an IR but I'm curious of model. Do you like it? I've been looking for something for my shop.

    • @EdgePrecision

      Yes its a Ingersoll Rand model DS15. Its been a while since I bought it, but I think I bought it from Granger. (They probably don't have the best price.) My compressor is a 5Hp so this is the size for it. It works fine, I have had no trouble with it. Its a good idea to also put a automatic drain on the compressors tank set to vent moisture at some interval. Thanks.

    Did you need to do any concrete work for either of the Haas machines?

    • @EdgePrecision
      @EdgePrecision  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No these machines don't need any special foundation.

    Did no one notice you loading these into the garage and wonder what you were up to? Do the sliding panels help much with noise?

    • @EdgePrecision
      @EdgePrecision  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +backyardcnc Maybe someone did but our neighbors are cool and didn't say anything. I did somewhat sound proof the garage so the noise wouldn't be noticeable. Yes that's what the panels do as well as for the air conditioning.

    There is a tap chart located on the wall behind your laptop - who makes that? It looks like it has everything all in one place. I have a good friend of mine who is an old school CNC guy - he's not a Haas fan because of the linear rails. Having used the TL-1 and the TM-1 and space was not an issue - would you go with Haas again? Great videos! Keep up the excellent work!

    • @EdgePrecision
      @EdgePrecision  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes for Hobby work or light manufacturing these are good machines. The tap chart you are referring to is one from Emuge. It is very old now I don't know if it is still available. If you want some of the best taps available you can't go wrong with Emuge brand.

    Nice shop! Is it a noise issue or something else against having the machines in there? Could you get in trouble for just having them there if you're not making noise?

    • @EdgePrecision

      I actually took a lot of trouble to sound proof the garage just for that reason.

  • @OutlierConcepts

    have you ever run both machines at the same time (curious whether there would be a power issue like you started talking about)

    • @EdgePrecision
      @EdgePrecision  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I have run both machines at the same time. I haven't had a problem. Most of the time when a machine is running it doesn't draw very much power. I think you would only run into a issue if both machines were pulling full power in a cut at the same time than maybe. The house has a 200 amp service and my dryer and water are heated with gas. The only other big power draw is the air-conditioning. There is also a 5hp 230 volt air compressor. Off the top of my head I think these machines are rated at about 30 amps full load, that's probably on 3 Phase power though.

    Hi Peter
    Nice video. Tell me when you have 2 machines cutting and the compressor running, can any noise be heard outside?

    • @EdgePrecision
      @EdgePrecision  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The compressor is in a sound room. It makes very little noise even in the garage. You cant hear it outside. I also sound proofed the walls. So unless I’m machining something that’s making a lot of noise you can’t hardly hear it outside. Unless the garage door is open. But even still my neighbors are great and would not give me trouble.

    Hi,love your workshop and machines. Are your Haas machines 3 phase and if so how are you running them on single phase please.Have you retired them ?wish to know as I want to buy a Haas Minimill ,which as I’m in the Uk is only 3 phase . Any help would be much appreciated. Kind regards Mike

    • @EdgePrecision
      @EdgePrecision  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mike. These little Haas machines can run on either 3 phase or single phase 230 volt supply. I am running them in my garage on 230 volt single phase power. When running on single phase I think it reduces the power of the spindle drives somewhat. I don't know the exact amount though. The machines run very well on the single phase you cant really tell the difference from 3-phase power. All of the functions perform the same. I really like these little Haas machines. Of course they don't have the power and rigidity of my large machines at work but they can do small parts very well.
