    When I started collecting, I was just collecting the player itself. But eventually, I am collecting for the art of the card and the quality.

    Hey T-pot thanks for another thought-provoking video. IMO obviously depends. For example i love that Messi you showed…but i personally would rather have his iconic RC…that would mean more to me, regardless of scarcity and grade…I kind of PC Messi. Ohtani on the other hand, I would rather have a nicer card/auto versus a PSA 10 RC. I like the player but he doesn’t mean anything to me, it would be for investment only. I hope this makes sense.

  • @JackCecil
    @JackCecil 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The problem with the first comparison is the perceived value is assuming condition. The question would be better asked if you cracked the slabs and offered all three raw. The barber card is obviously still a GM card raw, but would you still risk it to have a grade done again? Or just protect it yourself and put it away? I bet the kaboom would be everyone’s choice at that point unless it was obviously flawed.

    I acquired 1 of each couldn’t see the PC without one or the other I would have chosen the Luka Prizm RC,the Curry Topps Chrome Refractor I’d choose,the Messi base RC I’d choose,the Ohtani the Heritage Chrome hands down and a 10 for the most nothing less than a 9,like that Burrows shadow box best i personally have a very rare high end collection high grades as well thanks T-Pot for a fantastic video

    Great video T-pot!!!
    My picks...
    100% the Aurora Luka.
    I agree with you on the STEPH as well.
    The Soccer Jesus is where im gonna disagree because of my absolute hatred and contempt for Panini in regards to them destroying prizm/select/optic with the amount of parallels and overproduction...as well as the quality control...or lack thereof. So im going with the Mega Kraxxx...which isn't rare...but its definitely not overproduced.
    Pencil me in for the Shohei Stack as well...there's so many options for the Japanese Unicorn with his rookie cards...so im going with quantity over quality.
    As far as Joey Ice Cubes...I love his swagger...and his talent is undeniable...but his career so far simply doesn't warrant the prices of his cards.
    With Joey B....I would love a dope case hit insert from SPECTRA or OPTIC over anything else.
    BTW....I would love for you to explore...or deep dive into a hockey card/set that came out in 1998-99...O-Pee-Chee Chrome Blast from the past...particularly the refractor parallel. How rare they are...and how nice they look.
    The Gretzky from that set is a card I had at one point but traded it away years ago unfortunately.
    Its now on my grail list of cards I want/need.

      @@ryansomers9440 eh. There's plenty of cards where you can buy a raw card in really good condition for pretty cheap that has value once graded. I usually buy groups of 10 or so cards every now and then of a player I'm collecting. For example I just bought a bunch of Bo Bichette and Julio Rodriguez rookie parallel and refractor cards raw.
      Edit: I also buy higher end cards that are pricier but I believe you can do either or and gain appreciation... for example I don't think anyone that owns a Mike Trout non numbered parallel rookie card is complaining...

    With Ohtani, I immediately went with stack over single pristine BGS card… but upon further reflection, I think BGS’s downward spiral impacted that decision - or at least the ease with which I made that decision. There’s a whole generation of collectors who not only don’t revere the BGS slab and grade, they don’t even have it on their radar. So, while seasoned collectors value the pristine 10, there’s subconsciously less value in it for me than there used to be. Not because I value it less, but because the hobby is heading in that direction.
    Regardless, even at BGS’s height, I’d still probably vote for the stack. But it would’ve been a harder decision back then.

  • @rickinquest
    @rickinquest 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'd usually defer to the RC because, historically, it's a chronological debut, "the first" which seems more prestigious as a fan, especially since card companies are continually rigging the game and baiting the collectors with 1/1's, SP short print releases, sub-set SP's, numbered cards etc that they're making year after year. So, I can appreciate a solid "Rookie Card" for those reasons... 'tho a 1/1 of a good design might tempt me as an investor because it's "one of a kind" so long as it's not in a series of so many similar parallel releases (various rainbow colors or minor variation versions).

    For the Messi situation- that 1/1 is hands down going to be over a million dollars in under 10 years. You heard it here first. Those base Messi rookies are continuing to increase in population, because just like the junk wax era of 1990's football, they produced a ton of those cards. Those cards are going to come down quite a bit, and you'll see his autographs, patches, and especially his 1/1's continue to increase in value.

    Luka Kaboom , Curry RPA, 1/1 Lionel Messi , shohei bgs pristine, burrow Kaboom… I will say this, we still are hanging on the rookie idea, when Jordan has cards 10 years after his rookie year that are worth wayyy more and way rarer.

    I also feel that PSA has tougher and more consistent grading than the other companies, at least that is the conclusion of the market. To me, a PSA grade makes a card rarer. A PSA 10 with a population of 10 on a popular card now makes that card an ( of ten), just like if the manufacturer printed 1/10 on the back of the card. Obviously the value of the card changes as the population does. I personally love the idea of having an immaculate sample of a great rookie card.

      I also think you have to look at who your asking these questions to. Collectors like me don't look at it if from a monetary perspective, whereas majority of the new hobbiest only care about value and have no real connections to the card's. Money is what drives alot of these folks, not the fun or memories of actually collecting.

    RCs have always been king. . . Many of these “rare” inserts can still be printed. No one is printing rookies anymore. For example, kabooms are so common now. I would not buy any unless they are RC years. But you folks are part of the problem as “hot cards” should always be RAW! Stop the excuses about conditions, just average the sales prices. Prices should be on the cards themselves! Rarity should be based on print runs first. I laugh when a “hot” card’s price is less than the cost it costs just to grade it! Does that mean that a card worth $15 in a PSA 10 is worth NEGATIVE $5 raw since it cost $20 just to slab it? Ridiculous!
