    We have an Eastern Box Turtle. I'm in Ohio you do not need a permit but it is illegal to release them into the wild after 30 days. She was a rescue from the wild so they're definitely native here.

      You don't need a permit to own one you need a permit to keep one from the wild.

      You DO need a permit in ohio to own eastern box turtles. They must come from out of the state and you CAN NOT sell or breed them. That's the law.

      Not sure on turtles specifically but with ohio snake natives we can collect up to 4 of a species from the wild with a permit and keep captive bred with permit. We have different permits for just keeping versus commercial propagation. I think the box turtles require proof they are captive bred.

    The first male you showed looks a lot like one of my males. I have 4 and 1 female. I'd love to have another female.

    I had an eastern box turtle as a kid and let it go too. I live in upstate New York, I know they live in upstate New York just wasn't too sure if they're any where I let him go. I let him go in a field by woods. There was tons of wild strawberries growing there, it was actually my back yard.

      If you're ever in that situation again keep in mind box turtles spend their entire lives in a range no bigger than a football field and if wild born will seek to return to their home range rather than settle and live in a new location which can put them in danger if there is a lot of road/development between them and their original home. They have excellent directional sense and will just start heading "home". If you MUST relocate make sure you take them to a fresh water source and hope they decide to stay rather than head "home". Otherwise they may die of dehydration without knowing where water is. If you leave them by water they can find there way back there if they don't try to return home.

    I live in Kentucky, & theres a nature preserve fairly close to my house that has tons of eastern. I happened upon an extremely colorful male one day that looked very similar to yours, but his eyes were the brightest orange/red color I've seen on a male in person. He looked very old, & kind of grumpy, literally like a grumpy old man lol, so I didn't admire him for too long.

      I know exactly what you mean. I've been going to the area for about 3-4 years now, and sadly I've only been lucky enough to see about three of them about two summers ago. I'd like to think it's because they ventured onto the surrounding farm lands around the preservation, but unfortunately I know thats not always the case.

    I tried to buy a turtle recently but found out its illegal to sell turtles in my state, N.C. bc they can carry salmonella. I did buy one from a pet shop in Florida not long ago. I want to build a outdoor habitat but since I can't buy any in my state the only way I know how to get them is taking them from the wild but I also don't wanna do that so I'm kinda in a messed up situation.

      That's really cool! You should post a video of it because if it was found in a city it could possibly have been a pet. Was it really timed when you picked it up? Also what state are you located?

      +Shelled Reptiles.... she seems to be not timid...all the people that I asked about her said put her back where I found her and release...problem, in the street in middle of city, no woodlands around...some say if I relocate her, she'll just wander aimlessly...not trying to do that.. I built a outside habitat in my garden...till I find a place for her. I also built an indoor habitat, in a large child sandbox to mimic the outdoors, leaves fresh dirt grass clumps with worms, feed her strawberries, bananas, green leaf lettuce, and title food. she stretches her neck to watch us...she's cute.

    my one question is, how deep is the dirt ?, is it deep enough for them to lay eggs?

    • @ShelledReptiles
      @ShelledReptiles  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is 2 inches of dirt on the bottom and 3 inches of mulch, it's not really as deep as it needs to be but they won't be laying any eggs this year so its something I'll have worry about next.

    Do you have any tips on getting a baby turtle to eat?

    • @ShelledReptiles
      @ShelledReptiles  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      when baby turtles do not eat I have always given them live food, (like meal worms) until they come accustomed to you feeding them. Then just stop giving them the worms and only put in the food you want to feed them. Or if it is a land turtle you could put live food in top of the food you want it to eat and slowly stop giving the live food.
