    Haven’t watched this yet, but thought I’d chime in. I was a Cummins tech in Atlanta in the 80’s, and I had a cheat I’d use for adjusting the valves on the 855. I’d run down the adjusting screws to squeeze out any excess oil in the push tube cups, then back them off. Then I’d set my feeler gage in place and use my 5-6 in/lb torque wrench to tighten the adjusting screws. Lock them down and done. I got consistent results every time, and I didn’t wear out my feeler gages slipping them in and out trying to get the “feel” just right. For anyone who doesn’t know, the 5-6 in/lb torque wrench was for setting the injector push tube clearance to zero. I used that principle to set my valves, but with the feeler gage in place, I got perfect clearance every time. I haven’t touched a Cummins engine in 30 years, so I’m behind on the technology and current design, but I’m sure there’s a lot of those engines still in service today.

      I always wore out my feeler gauges, but it was always fun. Loved working on the old Cummins Engines, especially using the uniform plunger travel method for injector adjustment.

    intake 11 thousands and exhaust 23 . If it is a big cam 290 you set it like I described in the video to 6 inch pounds on in inner base circle method. If it is a small cam 290 set it on outer Base circle method to 72 inch pounds on injector.On outer Base circle you adjust the injectors on the same cylinder as the valves.

    Never heard it called the inner/outer base circle method. On the big cam engines, we always ran the injector on 1 ahead of the cylinder we were adjusting the valves. For instance, if we ran the valves on 1, we would set the injector on 5. On the small cams we would adjust the injector on the same cylinder as the valves.

    Would you be able to explain to me how to adjust the cross heads. My exhaust crossheads when it’s their turn to be adjusted during inner base their at the correct lash but when i cycle over to next letter it seems to be to loose and create a tick and the cross T moves when looking at my valves on their cycle letter the exhaust valve seems to be lower than the intake. I have read the manual but It’s not the easies to understand.

    Q: Looking at buying a 1977 truck fitted with BC350. Owner has ‘adjusted’ injectors and says it now fills shed with smoke. Are the injectors easy to set without reseting valves and how likely is it that its only inj that needs setting up.
    How many hr work to set injectors at a diesel workshop should l expect?

    I have a N14 RedTop Celect+ 460hp. Started smelling coolant and found bubbling at block and front head. I'm guessing this is the problem but wondering if a blown head gasket will allow coolant to get into a cylinder. Reason I ask is I stopped the engine for a few minutes to check oil and upon starting I generated a large steam cloud for a few seconds, then it cleared up. No engine miss, no power loss but temps climb and require engine fan use to keep temps in check. What is the clearance for the rockers upon reassembly. Your videos are great! Thx! Kelly

      That n-14 should be 14 in take and 27 exhaust. Injectors will be set on same cylinder as valves and adjust injector before valves by loosening locknut and tighten injector set screw till timing plunger touches (which you will feel) and then back out two flats.

    • @donsgee9654
      @donsgee9654 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      is this at tc or at a b or c depending on cylinder because i am confused because outer base circle says adjust to 90 inch pounds injector first then valves while the pulley is on the marks and what do you mean by two flats big cam 4 855 stc injector

    • @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353
      @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dons Gee Don't adjust anything on tc. Start a A which will be cylinder 1 or 6. If the valves are loose on 6 that means you are on tdc on that cylinder so you would start there and then go in firing order 1, 5 , 3 , 6 , 2 , 4. B mark covers cylinders 2 and 5 and C mark covers cylinders 3 and 4. It takes 2 complete revolutions of crankshaft to adjust all valves. And yes start by adjusting Injector on that cylinder first and the do your valve , then rotate to next letter on accessory drive until all have been adjusted.

    Good info thanks. But I am still getting mixed specs (valve and injector)for this 1991 Cummins STC 444 CPL 1280 serial# 11622768. I believe this is an 88 big cam IV. The book method I see is for a 6 lb-in torque wrench with a lever(3822648) for the injectors and 0.11 and 0.23 on the valves. Am I on the right path?

  • @elcampo7215
    @elcampo7215 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Love your videos. On the outer base circle method (Mine is an old Big Cam 4 CPL 1594 with STC injectors) am I understanding correctly that the only part that I have to torque (to 90 inch pounds or whatever it is is with dial torque wrench) is the injector rocker correct? The rockers for the valves I do with feeler gauges correct? Doing it this way you do not mess with that 6 inch pound setting that I keep hearing thrown around if I understand it right(which I understand is for the INNER base circle)? There is so much misinformation about this on the web and forums that it is unbelievable.

      Great thanks, One other question: How do I know what torque number to torque the injectors to? I cannot seem to find the OBC torque rating for the 1594 CPL anywhere. It is in a John Deere 8970 tractor. Any ideas how to find something like this out? Our local Cummins dealer in Houston is clueless and think that that CPL is a N14 when its clearly a BCIV.

    • @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353

      David Pokorzynski No, on a small cam start at A mark on accessory drive and see if 1 or 6 is loose, first adjust your injector down to 72 inch pounds and the n valves intake 11 and exhaust 23. B Mark is 2 or 5 and C is 3 or 4. That's Obc method.

    I’ve got an older n14 and I keep bending and breaking injector push tubes. Twice on number 4 now on number 1 cam and rollers look fine I’ve herd that if the Jake’s are sticking it might cause this. Any help would be appreciated

    • @gerryspang5917
      @gerryspang5917 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Biggest reason for bent push tubes is the engine is probably set wrong, set it at the outer base circle which means when on A the cyl set should be 1 or 6, whichever has both valves closed. Intake clearance should be 14 thou, exhaust 27 thou and injector 125 inch pound on mechanical engine or on electronic N 14 bottom out injector and back off 2 flats of adjusting nut. Other possibility is that the accessory drive has been removed and not timed to the camshaft when reinstalled.

    • @gerryspang5917

      The setting would be outer base circle, when on A or 1 - 6 B 2 - 5 C 3 - 4 you set injector at 72 inch pound the intake valve at 14 thou, and the exhaust valve at 27 thou. This should be done when engine Is hot firing order is 1 5 3 6 2 4 the cylinder to set is the one with the valves shut colder I usually set at 60 inch pound and intake 13 and exhaust 25. then after warming up reset the the valves and injectors.

    I had my old versatile 800 n855c250 running great finished seeding Friday when the vent started smoking wild blow by. I finished went to move it 2 miles next day it started and ran great and half way home the coolant filled the crank case as pressured up as the block was would you guess head bolt or gasket ?

    • @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353
      @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jeff amoth I would guess head gasket, pull the turbo and exhaust manifold and maybe you can see a wet valve port, or sometimes I take a pressure tester and pump up the coolant system and can hear it.

      thanks no turbo that helps some runs great but white oil! thanks again

      @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +jeff amoth I have seen head bolts do that also, could be either one . You could pop your valve covers and just grab the head bolts and yank on them with a pair of pliers and see if one comes out. Oh yeah no turbo n855c, don't see many natural aspirated ones. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

      I tried pressuring the system, it drained down in about 15 minutes couldn't hear for sure what head was leaking or were it was leaking. I pulled the middle head after finding no broken head bolts because there seemed to be moister on outside of head on the block.I deiced to pull all 3 after not finding any definite failed spot on any of the gasket's.I didn't have a dial indicator so I slid a .007 feeler around the edges of the sleeve every thing was below it and looks flat will check it later. the tractor is 116 miles from the nearest Cummings dealer in the US hard to have some on just swing by to take a look.I was told its hard to see the failure of the gasketts some times? on all the old cases I have worked on I could see the problem.

      jeff amoth I wonder if an Injector copper cracked, any pistons have any white crusty looking crap on them? Run each piston down to bottom dead center and see if you have a cracked liner. Look at heads real close and make sure you don't see a crack between a water port and where the fire ring is. Sometimes problems like that can be hard to find, look at Injector coppers real close too.

      grease monkey101 the bridges on the intake side are for Jakes. someone probably put them in at some point in that engines life. plus I wasn't paying attention at first to see that engine doesn't have Jakes anyway. no worries, just figured I'd point that out

    Yes sir I have an old versatile 895 with the 855 big cam with around 13000 hours was getting oil in the water 100 hours ago replaced the cooler and now in getting water in the oil seem to run fine until today and was running hot that's when I noticed them water vapor coming from the blowby what's the odd of a bad oil cooler or cooler seals?

    • @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353
      @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maynard 59 I would think you have a separate issue, sounds like a head gasket, oil cooler typically blow the back in the coolant because the pressures are higher.

    • @maynard5955
      @maynard5955 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      grease monkey101 kinda what I suspect it seemed to have a lot of pressure in the cooling system although it was around 220 degrees n blowing steam didn't want to pull the cap off any tricks to picking the right head the first time

      dale evans
      That's what I was worried about i had replaced the oil cooler and I guess I didn't get the O rings in far enough some of them older engines will pressure up to 75 - 80 lbs of oil pressure and I guess push them out and made a big mess then when I shut I off the water pressure forced water in the oil anyway got an new O ring kit and did it all over and seams to be working fine

    • @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353
      @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jose rubio Start out on accessory drive mark A and check valves to see if valves are loose on #1 or # 6 . So if valves are loose on #1 then adjust Injector on same cylinder you are adjusting valves which would be #1. Adjust Injector to 72 inch pounds , and then set valves to intake .011 thousandths and exhaust to 23 thousandths. Go to accessory drive mark B and you will be on #2 or #5 , if you did cylinder #1 then cylinder #5 will be next. Firing order is 1, 5 ,3,6,2,4 .So the next mark will be C and You'll be on cylinder #3. Then go back to A to do the other cylinders.

      ok. Am I looking for a riveted tag or is it stamped in the cast? Im cleaning thendirt off of it now. The engine isnt the original engine in the truck so the vin is no help

    • @andrewj7424
      @andrewj7424 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ok. My 5.9 cummins is like that. This engine doesnt have the tag on it. I know I have the right injectors because we got a part number off of the old injectors. (Top stop injectors) the engine has what looks to be millitary paint on it. single long valve cover with a slanted valve box riser. Just trying to make sure i have the right valve specs. We didnt loosen any of the valves when we pulled injectors just slipped the injectors out after moving the injector rockers

    so how to you tell the difference between a 290 Cummins and a 350 Cummins

    • @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353
      @westerntruckandtractorrepa1353  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Marc Robinson Well they are pretty similar, usually I just look at the data plate on the accessory drive cover, it will say ntc 350 or or nta 290 . I Know the 400's had larger crank dampners than the 290's, but I don't remember if the 350's we're the same as the 400 or 290.I guess I have never run across a 290 or 350 with the data plate missing. I am sure there is an old Cummins mechanic somewhere that could rattle off all the variations, but I usually just go off the plate.

    we just replaced number 1 and 2 injector on big cam 4 855 engine with stc injectors and replaced gaskets on number 3and 4 cylinder rotate engine and get a clicking noise on both heads we adjusted the motor using outer base circle we adjusted number 1 cylinder to 90 inch pound and then the valves then finished adjusting the other 3 clyinders now we get a clicking noise when we rotate the motor using the starter and a jumper clicking noise is worse when we start building up oil pressure any help would be appreciated thanks

      +Dons Gee What gaskets? Head gaskets, rocker box gaskets. Make sure the rocker box hold down bolts are tight, it sounds like you have a valve loose, was it ticking before you changed injectors? What are valve lash settings on your engine? 14 and 27 or 11 and 23?

    • @donsgee9654
      @donsgee9654 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      we replaced rocker and jake gaskets set valves to 14 and 27 and injector to 90 inch pounds we change injector cylinder two was white smoke my friend wanted to change both injectors so we would not have to touch that head again for a while but after getting injector we noticed the bottom oring was hard and flat on old injector i put my hands on the rocker for the injector and the injector feels like it is clicking we tightened the rocker hold down bolt to 60 foot pounds don know what we did to get a clicking noise have done the out base circle a coulpe of times never had a problem with clicking noise untill now i think the injector clicking noise is when the injector is coming back up
