I don't think you even understand whats happening. Startups are not getting funding as they used to so most people are just going solo, freelance. Even the freelance market is brutal and gigs are hard to find. Yes I will say it again, I know few senior devs who lost their jobs last year, due to inability to find work, 1 of them is now an intern at Accenture. You are not alone. We all lose motivation, and we all eventually find it again. You're a great role model, and your honesty and willingness to share your struggle is admirable. We're all rooting for you. I'll share what I feel like works for me. I like to just read a few pages from a good book, something that gives me a more positive outlook and opens my eyes to other ways of seeing things, and while I do this I write down my own thoughts and notes.
    Usually people call them "self-help" books. I was reading "The secret" by Rhonda Byrne its super short and easy to read, probably a couple of hours of reading. It got my head out of the mess and I was able to become productive again, highly recommend it. Reading in general, I find it to be a great way to mentally reset and make you reflect and think more positively about yourself.
    But it seems like towards the end you are doing better. What has happened is in the past, learn what you can and keep going. Focus on the future, and the opportunities it holds for you.

    Thank you for putting your life experience out there. I am 40 years old, living in Nigeria, jobless and currently learning Python. Sometimes I wonder if I am on the right path, especially when I see videos like this. There’s a lot of doom and gloom stories in the tech industry and it seems like a bad time to learn programming.
    My inspiration comes from the fact that coding/programming is a skill, once you learn it you can always build on your portfolio. And if no one hires you, you can start doing cool things for free; like building websites/apps for your friends&family. Secondly, this is tech! Tech is not going away anytime soon and learning the best technologies out there can make you a gem in a third world country.

    The first step we must take is reclaiming our self-worth from those who have convinced us it is insignificant. This applies not only to us as developers but to all Nigerians. The challenge lies in the fact that it is difficult to create something meaningful in or for Nigeria because we have been gradually reduced to a people with low self-esteem. How can we expect individuals with low self-esteem to support our products, even if they hold great potential? They likely have alternatives that have been imposed on them, despite the long-term costs. I have always believed that pursuing technology in this region should stem from a genuine passion, or else one will face constant frustration. We are perpetual consumers, not creators. If you attempt to build in a place where people don't recognize their need for it, who will buy or rent?

    Great video! I've found that letting go of expectations and just being a part of the journey has helped me. I think it's easier when you already have a source of income and web development is more of a career switch. Also asking myself, What if I don't get the web dev job, would I still want to keep learning? And the answer being yes keeps me going. I like the way my brain fires when I do it. Been learning for 4-5 years now. Just started learning PHP for backend 3 months ago after taking a step away from JavaScript land. PHP is awesome by the way.
    Keep sharing your story, I'm here for all of it.

    • @emiliaverse
      @emiliaverse  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You're so right. When I started, I watched a bunch of videos that said, "You can achieve this and that in 6 months after learning to code." This really skyrocketed my expectations. It's been nearly two years now, and I'm nowhere near where I expected to be. I guess it's best to adopt this mindset. Thanks for the advice.

    • @buildervision7082
      @buildervision7082 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@emiliaverselol yea those videos are so unrealistic. What we do is hard, you're basically rewiring your brain and learning how to think differently, so it's going to take time. Ease into it. What is interesting is that at some point you're going to lose track of when and how you even became so knowledgeable about what you know, and everything will just begin to flow.
      So web dev job or not, you'll have a skill and you could even wake up one day and decide to build a successful SAAS because you know enough, and you have what it takes to build something that works, something people can use. Till then, celebrate every win that you get moving forward. In fact, you're already winning because there aren't too many people that can do what you do. Keep it going.

    Motivation is a finite source unfortunately.
    I learned that late and the hard way... it also cost me close to 1k CAD with a psychologist.
    Here's the info for free:
    -Vitamin supplements (especially vitamin D and magnesium) - you will never get all your nutrients in your regular stuff... and vitamin D is an excellent anti depressant
    -Don't over do it - set a timer for focus work, for breaks like heading out and taking a walk outside for 10 to 15 minutes... get your mind of the code.
    -Stay active - exercise (gym, walk, jog, sport) how ever small... we need at least 10k steps per day.
    STAY OFF THE BED - laying down all day is a sure way to bring you down to a depressive state that will mess you up!
    Get a good night's sleep - 6 to 8h... if possible stay away from screen's blue lights at least an hour before bed.
    These are the basics...
    The IT job market is crap worldwide right now.
    Keep applying... set yourself a number of applications per day and stick to that as a Motivation hook.
    You can do it Sis!
    Much love from Canada

    -try a workplace like a cafe or whatever.
    -create a schedule (from 8-12 in the morning)
    -force yourself to go there everyday even if you dont work.
    -take the advantage of that place for motivation and translate it to home motivation.
    -you will eventually feel the need to go back home to work better but dont give up the 8-12 schedule until you fully motivated at home.
    ope this helps

      My biggest fear is being chased out of the Cafe. I’ll try again. Wish some of these workplaces I’ve seen were close to my residence. Thanks for the advice.

      Well I hope you find a safe place to work in, I do believe going outside at home and having that wired in you will create good feeling and better motivation.

      Same here. I don't want to call it depression, but it's starting to look like it. One thing that's helping me now is limiting social media use, setting alarms, and using motivational reminders. Try it. Wishing you the best!

    I can relate to this... But, it's usually more chaotic for me tho, from working on side projects inorder to strengthen my portfolio.. to job searching (been at it for 4 months now), and then going to work 3 days a week, as a Corper and not getting paid... 💔💔

    If you are eating clean, don’t forget to try to exercise. Skipping rope, dancing or maybe a little football with guys. You don’t really need to lift dumbbells. Try to spend Friday evenings & Saturdays away from home. My opinion looking in may be wrong though. Good luck
