hey guys love your channel , i've been watching your stuff for years. I like the vtol systems. However I was wondering if anyone thought of integerating an OSD with a forward seated motion sensor on each aircraft. so when the aircradt is close to another one in a dogfighting senario the sensor picks it up and displays the signature in the OSD which would emulate a target box just like you see on jetfighter HUD. Then it could have some signal that would transmit to the reciever when within range of the other plane to indicate a virtual kill. I think that is quite possible to achieve and would take this hobby to another level. Thanks!

FliteTest when I was a kid, I would play with some little pool drop toys shaped like missiles. I noticed that they fly like torpedoes through the water. I was thinking about your bomber challenge, and how you guys have built boats, and I was thinking that it would be REALLY cool to try to torpedo bomb some boats! Good luck!

FliteTest Ordered mine 2 days ago, should be here today, could of used the promo code. Son-in-law wanted me to get a striker or funjet but with it being my first time ever trying RC plane and bad eyesight, I think this will be better. I do pretty good on the simulator in expert mode doing loops, rolls, inverted, knife edge, stand, but that's not real life and i'm close enough to see. Thank you flitetest guys for getting me started at my old age (65). You make it look so easy and fun 👍

I know this vid is like 4+ years old but I had to chime in with my X-Vert experience. When I learned of this awesome little hybrid quad/plane/VTOL thingy, Horizon Hobby had the RTF version on sale (or clearance, I don’t recall…) for just $99! Plane, Tx, battery, charger, etc. Hella deal! So much fun that I actually bought a second RTF kit a few days later while it was still $99. The plan was I would have use the second one for spare parts, but it’s so much fun I kept them both flying. I did experience some weird power issues, one of the motors would randomly spin up to full power while hovering causing to over itself and into the ground. After one of the servos stripped out, I replaced both of them with two new Spektrum A220 4g replacement servos. I have had ZERO issues over dozens of flights with those A220 servos. Maybe the original servos were pulling too much as they began to fail or something like that. I have owned many (WAY too many) E-Flite products over the years. As I got older and my eyesight went all crappy, I had to stop flying and sell most of my RC gear. Then I discovered the X-Vert. It’s small enough to fly in my backyard (no trip to a park or the flying field necessary). Simply put, its a fun and stress-free flying experience. I grab the plane, a few batteries, kick back in my lawn chair and do some flying while watching the sun set. I even added a couple LEDs and will hover it around in my backyard at night. Life is good. :)

Good gosh how far has the hobby come. A year or two ago this would have been impossible, or as you said involve a bunch of complicated rotating mechanisms and servos. Thanks to you guys I think I'm going to buy one of these. My husband who loves pushing little quads around in self-level would love this I bet.

I noticed some of the reviews on other sites (including Horizon Hobby) where people were complaining of the x-vert dropping out of the sky in flight or shortly after launch in hover or any mode. Some said the plane was replace with same problem, some said they replaced the control board (which has the receiver built into it) and that it got worse than ever. I bought one anyway though...
At first I was thinking that perhaps they just didn't read the instruction manual that says the motors will disarm after 3 seconds of either no control input, throttle all the way down or no aircraft movement. Also, that the low voltage alert will lower throttle in hover or pulse the motor when nearing critical low voltage to warn. This may explain most of the issues but what about the ones that say, they were flying along and then, at full charge and not 3 second timeout, the plane would just stop and fall from the sky??
Could be low batt on transmitter instead causing poor reception by the receiver timing out but I think anyone would try to check that....
Sooo, I took a look at the receiving antenna in the x-vert. In my case, it was just a short piece of red enameled wire soldered to the control boards aft end. It was rubbing against the control board and the corner screw that goes through the control board to secure it. (this was all on my pre-first flight inspection, out of the box it came this way) the antenna was not straight but, actually sloppily glued in place in one tiny spot of antenna wire, half curled up like a wavy question mark or pigs tail near grey foam padding over a control sensor. There is no room inside the x-vert's compartment to have anywhere near the room to have the straight antenna that a tuned receiver needs and could explain the mystery portion of motor disarm in flight complaints because after 3 seconds of erratic or no control input while in flight due to poor reception at the receiver end, it MAY (I am not certain) cause the motors to disarm in flight even at very close ranges, especially if the antenna is intermittently rubbing through the enamel and grounding out to the Printed board , the screw through it or any components upon it after any crashes that could cause friction on the enamel coating.
I'm pretty sure the antenna is supposed to be straight so, I cut a slit in the foam towards the back corner of the compartment at a 45 degree angle towards the exterior and laid the antenna into it straightened with a bit of hot glue over the exterior slit and a dab inside where the antenna meets the foam of the compartment. I did this before doing a walk around reception test with my DX6 transmitter so, I'm not sure how much if any better reception distance it gave to my x-vert. Maybe this might help some folks diagnose any "it falls out of the sky" situations.
better safe than sorry I guess. Maybe I'm all wrong about the antenna placement, but I don't think so.

I haven't flown fixed wing RC for over 20 years, I just haven't got the reaction speed for most of today's flying wings, Or the level of depth perception needed to fly at a reasonable distance anymore..... But this little thing's caught my attention. They seem to be able to pootle about happily at almost glider speeds, And with some FPV kit onboard it could be an interesting toy to use for a spot of fixed wing fun again......... Very tempted.

I have one of these it's finally flying right I had a big problem at the very start with it because in airplane mode it was badly out of trim tried trimming it on my radio no luck at all until my uncle figured out that the push rods had to be bent a certain way in order for that to stop. BTW I did ordered that servo camera mount with servo from HH the other day have to head out to the post office this weekend to pick it up.

I enjoyed this video, as always. I am a beginner and have had great success and fun with this plane. It has increased my flying confidence because I do not have to worry as much about takeoff and especially landing. As mentioned in your video, it is important to know how to fly in the vertical mode and where the wind is coming from so you can fly edge on into the wind. Also, just like with any takeoff it is important to point it into the wind when transitioning from vertical to horizontal flight.

FliteTest it really did! The shape isn't too different from some of the foam builds you guys have done, so could you guys potentially build something that tracks similarly to this in its acrobatic mode? Or is it mostly stabilization from the electronics? I'd like to fly something like it, but can't warrant the price tag for a single plane.

( sorry for my poor english, I am no native english speaker )
    My own experiences:
With some but not much experience with multicopters: It can be flied in multirotor mode rather easily.
With some experience with aileron airplanes: It can be flied in stabilised ( airplane ) mode very easily.
    acromode ? I didn´t try it yet.
The props are way to weak--> 1 blade was broken and a new one is nowhere available !
So with lack of prop this model is useless !
Nevertheless: as long as not damaged: it´s fun !

Question: Can I use a 3-cell battery? I have a bunch of 550mah 3s batteries from my Eachine Lizard but I can't find any good info on using a 3s or not with the X-Vert. Do you know if 3s/12v would that be too much voltage for the electronics? I'm thinking that as long as the electronics can handle 12v then a 3s battery would make this thing SCREAM! Has anyone tried using a 3s on this?

I was waiting for the arkbird vtol to be reviewed by someone as well - I think it offers bigger motors and more flexibility but it looks like it is not ready for prime time as the news on it is very quiet. I know of two youtubers who got review kits and have yet to release flight videos. This X-vert feels a little limiting for that kind of money.

I would love to fly this thing. It looks so fun, even though I'm a more experienced quad and plane Pilot. But WHY is it not available in PNP? I don't own a Spektrum Radio, of course I could use a module, but that still sucks....

How bout two swappable tractors (one being CW and the other being CCW) on the front of a Mighty Mini Arrow? you then should have a D.I.Y. equivalent.

Nice! This is definitely something a beginner can get to grips. And even advanced pilots can have fun, too. But I cannot believe what a beating this little thing can take and still be able to fly... Oo
Great job, now I want one... :-p

I have two of these and never flew fixed wing before. Super simple in stability mode, working up to acro. One caution: Check the prop screws before every flight - nothing more embarassing than tail sitting and watching a prop zoom up 15' or so.........

Hey Josh, you mentioned @ 7:42m mark the DXe has wireless buddy boxing. I don't see that in the specs. Is that only available through the bluetooth dongle? Or is that with the DXe as the student transmitter bound to a bigger transmitter like a DX9 or something similar?
    And thanks for being awesome!!!

need to somehow come up with exactly the opposite, a quad that flies like an airplane. capable of barrel rolls, loops "not flips", knife edge, etc.

    • @bigjdubb
      @bigjdubb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

All of those maneuvers can be done with a quad. A fixed wing can perform a sustained knife edge whereas a quads knife edge is more like falling with style.

Josh B., I have one of these and it literally gave me back my RC nerves after a twenty year absence from RC. I have a question: Did you attempt to fly it in acro mode? I would like to try it but many reviews complained that the X-Vert is very hard to control, hence to enjoy, in acro mode. Did you find that to be true?
