Definitely want a series on this! I would really love more of an informational video on how you deal with complaints and emergencies. Do you manage your inbox 24/7? How do you action things if there are emergencies in different cities? Maybe a breakdown of the percentage of guests you have that have pretty major issues with. How many claims have you had to make relative to all the money you’ve made? I think it would be great to get real stats on what to expect!

Man I love your channel. Takeaways:
    1. Any business where you deal with people face to face and you work to have them have a good time is gonna have times that don't go as planned and customers will get upset at some point.
    2. The best way to deal with those bad moments is by having a positive attitude, being able to laugh about it a little, even if its really bad, and finding it in you to look at it half full to find solutions.
It seems like you're the kind of person that has a great sense of humor and that goes a long way in any service business, especially in hospitality.

I dig the "dark side of renting" stories. They help me realize it's not all just easy peezy. Being out at 3 am on a Saturday could break me.

Your stories are awesome. Especially like the A Frame story. We bought a house with an installed wood stove that we happily ran for a couple of years. Then I had an attack of nesting and among other things had a chimney sweep come out and do his thing. (Yes, a couple of years. 😬)
So he took one look at our stove and turned pale, cause apparently it was oversized for our house, had an improper pipe size to the nipple (they really call them that), and was installed too close to the bricked wall behind it.
That’s when I learned about nipple/pipe size compatibility, double walled stove pipes, and metal sheeting wall insulation for behind the stove. We also sold that old beast and got a smaller, more insulated, stone clad stove, since they’re safer. So shout out to all you chimney sweeps out there. You know your stuff. 💖

I ended up watching Robuilt nearly a year ago. It was like 3am. Not sure how I found his video or even why I watched the first one because it wasn't something I was into. But his personality was gold and he's a funny/cool dude. I spent like the next four hours watching Robuilt. Haven't watched a video in months. Just game back and discovered this gem. Gotta a like/sub/notification. I'm hooked. You're an amazing storyteller and have a fantastic way of communicating information that doesn't put someone to sleep.

That description you give of feeling like you were "watching it happen" is called mindfulness. It's the difference between people like you, who can easily roll with the punches (that life is DEFINITELY going to throw us all,) and people like Karen, who JUST CAN'T BELIEVE THAT MAINTENANCE PEOPLE ARE NOT SOBER AND ON CALL FOR HER 24 HOURS A DAY ON A SATURDAY NIGHT. I think you're more than optimistic. You're Mindful. And that's key to being happy in life, whether you work with the public (just shoot me now) or not. Thanks for setting that example!

We had a drunk guest go outside naked in the middle of the night, and then he couldn't remember where he was staying. Someone called the police and they eventually figure out that he was staying at our place. They banged on the door and his wife, who didn't even know that he was outside, let him in!

I grew up skateboarding and I use to like to fall or “slam” before I landed a trick. Seems silly, but in my mind, if I fell first, I already knew what it felt like to slam, so then I could put the fear of falling out of my mind and just focus on landing the trick. Fear can stop us from doing so many things in life, yet the thing we fear often times isn’t that bad. I like your perspective of the “bad things” that have happened to you with short term rentals. Often times in life it’s the things that go wrong that give us the best stories, or help us learn the most. So if someone else is saying “don’t do something because something bad could happen.” just respond by saying, “hopefully something bad does happen and I get to overcome it and learn and grow from it.”

Thank you for sharing your stories for others to learn from. 1. Glad the fire was manageable and did not cause worse damage. 🙏🏼 2. The renter that passed out was lucky she had good guys like you, your friend and Uber driver to make sure she got safely out of car and into your rental. But I would have told her what happened as she needs a reality check and needs to seek help. She could have OD-ed! Hopefully, that renter straightened up since then. I had a close call with a renter's gf almost OD-ing. They both abused substances. The bf called an ambulance for her to my multi-unit rental, which I also live at. 💀 3. I would have got an after hours locksmith, instead of waiting on the drunk maintenance crew to access unit. At least one of them should have been sober, if they are supposed to be on call. Though it sounds like none of them knew what they were doing, even if they were sober. 🍻

Renters break things and things go missing. I keep thinking about Walmart and how they put cameras in your face to let you know they're watching you. If an inventory list is displayed, along with replacement prices, I think renters would think twice about breaking or stealing things.

  • @Jeribeams

i think what is becoming a bigger and bigger problem with airbnb’s is the absent landlords just trying to capitalize off renters yet providing little to no service. i would not rent an airbnb where the owner is not within a 5 min drive. and renting out other people’s property is an even worse situation. like in your karen episode, the apartment you rented her was not your property and so you didn’t have the right to drill out the lock.
i think airbnb needs to crack down on this situation, like make airbnb landlords prove they have the right to rent the property out and also that they have a maintenance contact that is immediately available if there’s a problem. hotels have that, they are (usually) not just taking peoples money but providing no back up plan.
