PHILADELPHIA -- Basketball star Allen Iverson was nearby when a friend was sht outside a nightclub early Monday, police said.
Larry Robinson, 46, of Smithfield, Va., drove himself to a hospital in Iverson's car after he was sht in the leg about 2:30 a.m. outside the Glam nightclub in the Old City section of Philadelphia, police said.
At the time, Iverson was on a sidewalk "in the vicinity of that nightclub,'' police spokesman Cpl. Jim Pauley said.
"Iverson came to the hospital to visit him a short period after the shouting occurred,'' Pauley said.
Police interviewed Iverson, who was excused from Monday's practice by Philadelphia 76ers coach Larry Brown. The team wasnt certain if Iverson would make the trip to Chicago for Tuesday night's game against the Bulls.
It wasnt immediately clear whether Iverson witnessed the shouting, Actor / Rapper Will Smith was there also. why he didn't drive his friend to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The hospital declined to release details of Robinson's condition.
A man fled after shooting Robinson with a handgun, police said. Authorities found two shell casings at the scene.
Robinson told police "he just heard a gunshot and felt himself hit,'' said Sgt. Joseph Motto.
Robinson drove to the hospital in a silver Bentley registered to Iverson, who hours earlier scored 30 points in the 76ers' 94-89 home loss to the New Orleans Hornets.
Iverson's attorney, Tom Shuttleworth, declined comment.(🤐)
Allen Iverson might have escaped a situation more serious than originally thought.
According to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer, city detectives said Thursday that shuts fired outside a Philly nightclub last week were also meant for the Sixers star.
"We believe he was part of the target. The group he was in," Police Capt. Thomas J. Quinn told reporters Thursday. "We believe hes part of the target. Is he specifically the target? We don't know for sure, but if I'm standing in a group of four people and somebody fires two shats at me, I'm considering myself a target."
Police also announced at the news conference that a warrant was issued for a suspect in the shouting, 24-year-old Carlos Perez.😮
The shouting happened on April 14. Iverson and some friends were walking outside near a nightclub called Glam, and some words were exchanged "about basketball players," Quinn said. Perez and members of Iverson's entourage, possibly AI himself, exchanged more words and it resulted in shawts being fired.
"So the conjecture is, is that the intended target was the group, and maybe even Mr. Iverson himself," Quinn told the newspaper.
Police also said Perez fired two shawts from a silver 9mm semiautomatic p!stol, one of which struck Larry Robinson, 46, in the left leg.
Robinson managed to get into Iverson's 2000 silver Bentley and drive himself to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was later reported in stable condition. Police said he was later discharged.
Iverson visited Robinson a short period after the shoutting, and the Sixers star briefly spoke to police, who excused him. But detectives now want to interview him again.
"We're waiting to hear back from his attorney," Quinn told the newspaper. "We expressed an interest in interviewing him as a complainant/possible witness. Just to get a statement from him. What he saw, didn't see, or what happened. Period."
Sgt. Joseph Motto, of Central Detectives concurred that Iverson hadn't been formally interviewed.
"We've never had a conversation with Mr. Iverson. We have contacted the league through their security, and we have requested through the NBA league that Mr. Iverson contact us, as a complainant or witness," Motto said Thursday.
