i was thinking getting a FlexRadio for used remote at my job , but i decide to buy a IC7610 and use the Icom RS-BA1 v2 IP Remote Control Software allows you to use an Icom compatible radio installed in another room using your home network or even from a remote location over the Internet plus i will get the Icom RC-28 is an optional USB encoder that can be used with the RS-BA1 IP Remote Control Software .This device will connect to the USB port on your PC via the supplied USB cable. Utilizing the same tuning knob and encoder used on Icom HF radios, this accessory provides a "radio-feel" option to complement the IP remote control software. The RC-28 controls features a sturdy push-to-talk and two user-programmable function keys.
Have you given thought to simply adding the PTRX module to the 7300 and then you could hook it to a computer monitor. Doesn’t solve the coax thru the house problem but it does solve the small screen issue.
You know I've seen people running the 7300 on a screen, I thought maybe it was just a wire... I think I want to make this move to Flex. Will give me something to talk about on this channel for better or worse. Take a chance I say!

I got rid of my 7300 and picked up a Flex6600. The 6600 has better front in filters but the 6400 is a fine radio. Ham Radio 2.0 has 2 of them and one of them they leave in Costa Rica. They operate it remotely in Costa Rica from Texas and have had it down there for over a year. Now, the 7300 I did not sell but traded it for an AL-811H amplifier which I love as well. But, I have recently bought a 705 for portable use and it is a brilliant radio. I love Icom and Flex. Nice thing about Flex is that they are built down the road in Austin. And, customer service from Flex is outstanding.
if all You want is remote, the Icom RS-BA1 remote/internet kit works with the 7300, including waterfall and a control knob, but is a pig to set up.. As with the Flex AFAIK, if You want to do CW by hand, and not using a QWERTY keyboard, You are out of luck. The flex is like a pair of 7300s, and every revision of flex takes things to the next level. Go for it!!
Sounds like your excited to give the Flex a try. Go for I!. If you decide it's not for you, you can sell it. Actually I think you have 30 days to return it if not happy. Hard to learn everything, play, and make a decision in 30 days though. I owned a Flex 6300 and sold it. The reason was because I'm not a Windows guy and had a hard time problem solving and setting up via Windows. Now they work with Mac OS and iOS which is a game changer for me. I'm considering giving it another shot. I really loved the ability to get rid of interfering nearby channels with the TNF feature. You can literally 100% block interference. They're other features that are very good too. It's all about excitement, fun, and trying new things. This just cost a little more....:)
Tom, do you believe you'll benefit out of a super ultra ham radio if your antenna doesn't match that radio grade? A vertical is noisy on RX and won't offer you the gain and ability to beam it to where you want. I always invest more money on antennas than on radios. The same applies to cameras or do you believe photographs are great with cheap lenses? Antennas are lenses, they make your picture fine, focused and shine. Have that in mind.
Did the same thing man. I had pre-ordered the IC-9700 and cancelled it to get a Flex-6600 and a transverter. More of an expensive route but works so much better. Love it! No regrets.
I recommend QRZ to sell gear because you can upload several photos. I sometimes list on QTH and eHam as well but they only allow one photo and eHam photos are very small. I have had great success with all three. I can certainly appreciate the Flex Radio because they are top notch and offer so much flexibility. I see where it would fit your needs. Everyone's needs and wants are different so you have to suit yourself. Personally, although I can have any radio I want, I have the most fun with my 30 year old ICOM IC-735 and my QRP rigs...lol! I like the self contained radios. I do NOT want to be dependent on WiFi or the internet. After all that is the point of HAM radio. Point to point contact, no middleman and no fees. 73!
Thanks for the selling advice. In these comments I'm getting about 90% buying advice. I'll try out QRZ I think. I used Craigslist last time and had some minor success. I still have like 5 other radios so I'm still good with the OTA stuff.
Ham Radio CQ - Sounds good Tom. If you get the Flex I’ll be anxious to see some videos on its many cool features. Who knows, I may finally give one a try myself. 73!
Prepare yourself to ask you "Why those NR, NB, WNB filters are there?". 7300 NB and NR are far better than the Flex ones. 73' iw7dmh "Non è oro tutto quello che luccica"
@@hamradiocq He is full of crap I very seldom use filters the receiver is so good you don't need them. The signal is digitized at the antenna port there is no local oscillator or IF stages it is all done in software un like the Icom this is a true IQ quadrature setup . I like to do DX on 160 meters I have a high power AM station 1/4 mile away and my Icom and Yaesu were useless on that band with the flex I use the Tuning Notch Filter (brick wall filter) and it completely nulls out that station thru software and I can do DX work on 160 meters there is no way a Icom can do this.
I did exactly what you're thinking of doing and haven't regretted it. That said, 7300 was an EXCELLENT radio and would've kept it if I didn't need the money to pay for 6600. It would still be fun to have to play with every now and then but would be rarely used w/6600 being in the shed, tbh. Go for it.
I have a Flex 1500, that I use remotely. Like you the rig is not in my shack but elsewhere on my property (my garage). The rig is pretty much at the feed point and no issues with coax in the house and family. The Flex-1500 is not built for this kind of remote use, so I'd loved to upgrade to a more modern Flex rig (or similar), but the solution I have mainly built with stuff I had works well for now.
I know you mentioned having multiple antennas which is great, but what I found out in my research of the 6400 is it only has 1 spectral capture unit, which means you can listen to 2 bands at once but it will only allow you to receive on the same antenna. The A and B receivers are always stuck on the same antenna for receive. If that’s something important to you that’s something you should think about. I know I almost bought the 6400 until I found this out in my research. The 6600 does allow you to have different antennas assigned to different receivers, but it’s $2k more which pretty much killed me buying the flex radio for me.
Not to put a damper on your ideas but you may want to look around a bit more, or join the Flex community and do some more research. i recently returned my flex for a 4th time since purchase and was shocked to see that mine was #4301 to be repaired. That's something they don't talk about (reliability).
Hi Tom, Everyone I know who has a Flex Radio loves them. I owned a 6400 briefly, but had to sell it even before I opened the box when my dad passed away to help pay his expenses. I'm in the process of applying for a reverse mortgage, and if approved, will use some of the money to get a 6600 and Maestro. You and the family stay safe and have a happy holidays. 73 WJ3U
Is it 3 times the price better then the 7300? For a 1000 dollars you get this much enjoyment but for 3000 dollars you get 10% if that more enjoyment. If it's worth the 2k dollars for the extra 10% for you then go for it and congratulations. I'm sure you will enjoy either radio there both awesome.
I think being more portable around the house is key. Right now my garage is either hot, or cold or spidery and even scorpion-ey. I wanna bring the radio into my office, or living room wirelessly, or on the computer. Plus make screen share videos. Plus that 7300 screen is very tiny. Tnx fer comment.
@@hamradiocq No, they haven't charged me yet. Today marks 11 weeks since I made the order. The last update I asked for (about a week ago) they estimated an additional 5-10 weeks on top of the original 6-8 weeks, which would put fulfillment somewhere between 11-18 weeks. We'll see I guess... I think end of January would be a little optimistic unless I just ordered at the absolute worst time.
I have just been going through this same evaluation this week. I ended up ordering the Apache Labs Anan 7000DLE Mark II. The more I researched the Flex, the less interested I was in getting on that train. Whereas the Anan outperforms even a flex 6600 in several respects for $1,300 less.
Hey great comment Bash coder! Cool YT name as well. Bash Commander would be a good name also. Anyway good luck with your choice. I haven't heard of it. I decided on the Flex + Maestro. They are on 2 month backorder so it will be a while. I am pretty excited I think this is a game changer for both of us.
I would spend the money on the best antenna you could possibly install. You could remote the IC-7300 with the RS-BA. Radios are just bling with compromised antennas...... until you get a 120-foot tower with stacked yagis.
Don’t sell the 7300 until you’ve had an opportunity to operate the Flex for a period of time. The FLEX and Apache Lab SDR’s are great radios, but I caution if you’re not technically savvy with computers this can be an issue for some. I have been contemplating for over a year of moving off my 7300 but I really can’t justify or convince myself to do so, however if I was going to move to the higher echelon, I would seriously consider the flex or Apache lab SDR‘s. The 7300 still has the capability of operating from within your own location or LAN as well as being able to bring the 7300 up on your computer screen as well.... so there are options for those scenarios.. checkout VA3VMD QRZ for details. Good Luck!
I might let the 7300 hang around for a while before I sell, but that 800 or so could help cut a chunk out. Well if I get it and it sucks you can say I told you so.
@@hamradiocq You will have no problem reselling the 7300..... I would keep it till You’re satisfied of your decision. $800 now or 1month later won’t make a huge difference by waiting it out. Just my 2cents... Good Luck!
My advise, invest in a antenna system instead of a radio. hooking up a flex to some some whip antennas in the backyard seems pointless to me, Keep the 7300 and get a 50 foot mast with a beam in it, same money huge difference. You won't believe what you can work.
I own an Icom 7300 and Flex 6300/Maestro. If you ever want to setup in the field like Field Day or POTA, you will wish that you kept that Icom 7300. Nobody takes Flex rigs to the field. Also it is nice to have a back up radio just in case your Flex needs service....just my 2 cents. Of course, money is always the issue.....or is it XYLs are always the issue....hi hi.
Traveller NL . Wow thanks for the link. Software problems for tuner.... and WiFi dropping? Unacceptable, at least for me, for a radio that costs so much
I have several HF radios but my main radio is a Flex 6600M, with the HDMI output feeding a 53" 4K LG TV Set.. Spectrum Scope is so cool!! But my main number 1 top reason for going with Flex was Software Enhancements.. Unlike the BIG THREE, that make releases to fix bugs for the first 6-12 months,, Flex gives you an entirely new platform with major software upgrades. I had the 2.XXX software but then came along 3.XXX... Now you do have to pay $200 for the new revision,, but with so much invested in ham radio gear, does $200 mean that much, plus it does cost Flex $$$$ to develop software.. So spending $200 every few years is fine with me... Being a complex radio, it does have its quarks, but once you understand what you can and can not do with the radio, you are fine. But in the end it is up to the end user to select what works for them.. Good Luck and enjoy!!!
WoW Tom, to be honest I have thought highly of the 7300.... I did wonder and thought the frost got to you! BUT after watching what you want to upgrade to I think you have to go with what you rhink is best, looks amazing and will do some research myself. Look forward to the upgrade video.... Hi Hi....
Hey Kiwi always a nice comment from you my friend. Yeah, well, i'll never stray from my love of the outdoors and QRP in the wild. I think I'd like to upgrade my 'base station' as well. So here we go. I'll keep you informed online as always. For better or worse. Hi Hi
I would like a flex also. I think it would be neat, so when away from home, you can still be on the radio remote. I am looking forward to watching your future videos. 73
Hi, I did exactly what you have done, except I still kept my 7300,for now!. Went to buy a 6400 but came home with a 6600M, long story!!. Anyway, very happy with my purchase and as good as the 7300 is, there is no comparison between the 2. One thing I will add is if you are using the maestro on WiFi, dont expect seamless performance. You will get dropouts. I use SSDR on my laptop via WiFi, it works, but not 100%, I do get dropouts. Its usable though ona good WiFi signal 5G preferably. I would suggest running good quality LAN cable to your office, or to wherever to intend to use it most, from your router. I upgraded all mine to shielded Cat7 cable, and that improved general throughput a lot. I love the Flex, its awsome, the AGC-T control especially. All the Flex videos on TH-cam sold it to me. Good luck and 73 de Nigel G0CQZ
Hey Nigel great comment. Many people have been giving me a hard time for this, but it looks like an awesome radio. I just hope the 6400 is good enough instead of the 6600. I will test out WIFI with the Maestro then I'll run a wire if I have to. I'm excited but it's on 2 month backorder.
I looked at the 6400 really hard, decided against it mainly because of some of the issues people were having with them...if you get the internal tuner there could be issues and needing to roll back the software to a version that works... I think the tuner everyone is using on flex is the palstar auto tuner, $1500.00...might be wrong on the price but its higher than mfj models... Im on a pc all day long so radio time is my break from that...I want to get the next level of radio from my 7300, maybe the 7610 or 890s
I hear you dmb but I went out and watched Signal Searchs latest video and man he sold me. I really want to be able to operate from different parts of the house and hopefully this works.
I ran over 100 feet of coax and saved thousands. I'm also not a fan of anything that requires an internet connection and computer. With that said, enjoy and have fun, hams come in many flavors.
I have a 6400M and love it. I also like using my laptop from a friends house and working remotely to it. Btw, I also still have my 7300, it's my back up. If I don't feel like waiting for the 6400M to boot up, I just use the 7300. I'll never sell that radio.
I would seriously consider a yaesu ft dx10 has a bigger screen and 3Dspread spectrum display with a better receiver. Can’t wait to get another stimulus n I ll sell my 991a and either get the ftdx10 or a the big brother 101d with 2 receivers 😉 KC3ONO
Here is a fun story for you, I found your radio you have for sale on CL, I have an interest in it. Seen you mentioned this channel a couple of times on your CL add, so I came over here to see your channel. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us. I do Like the looks of the new FLEX you will be getting. I am not in a position that I am looking at the FLEX, Flex is suppose to be an awesome rig. Looking forward to seeing your Christmas Gift. Yes sir, the ICE storm was bad. Subbed. Have a blessed week. Dale KI5ARH
As sleepy (and senile) Joe would say " C'mon.....man..." !! LOL. Among dozens and dozens of other rigs, I have 3 x Flex rigs and 2 x Icom IC-7300 rigs. I used to use the Flex rigs most of the time. For the past 3 or 4 years, I only use one of my 2 x 7300 rigs - love them. Screen too small ? no way Tom - your FT-891 has a screen 1/4 the size and you don't have issue with that. Flex rigs are great, make no mistake....just the IC-7300 can be picked up and taken to your moms house so easily...or to the park etc. I think you will get another 7300 when you start missing it, and I believe that will happen.
Sleepy Joe's only argument no matter how bad it is... C'mon Man. Jump off that cliff.... C'mon man. Ha! I *may* not sell the 7300 and still buy the flex. I always found the 7300 to be too big and sensitive (the screen) to carry around so I consider it a base station. Hmmm decisions decisions.
You can remote the 7300 to your computer, as well. That gives you the ability to see the screen better. Much cheaper option. It also let's you operate the 7300 from anywhere, over the internet. IDK...that $3k could do alot in the antenna department. The "new radio bug" is pretty powerful. But do you really need it? There are things the flex does better than the 7300. There are things the flex does that the 7300 doesn't. But, the 7300 is a pretty good radio, and you already have it. $3k would also buy alot of amplifier....lol.
You bring up good points Mike, but the question 'do you really need it' would have stopped me from ever getting into this hobby! : ) I might let the 7300 hang around for a while before I sell, but that 800 or so could help cut a chunk out.
Flex is definitely a better radio than the 7300. I have a 7300 (and it is a good rig) and I’ve used a Flex. You won’t regret it especially with the Maestro. Also, try listing it in swap.qth.com.
N6IQY I have a 6400 I use 3 monitors using QRZ, WJST ,N3FJP logging software and radio running at the same time. I have over 5000 QSO on FT8 I love it you get QRZ XML link and it automatically shows you the picture of you contact from QRZ and at the same time logs you in with log book of the world ,QRZ and eQSL through N3FJP software. They had some issues with Windows 10 I think it is fixed now. I use Windows 7 with no problems. You can use a tablet or laptop remotely. I use $50 transverters from Ebay, 2 m , 440 mhz , 220 mhz and 1.2 gig for satellite, works great in FM , CW and SSB they show up in display as normal frequencies (145.300) so you can have all modes, and all ham bands in one box. Once you get used to it you can't go back. The radio is a server basically you can put it in a remote location with a static ip and log in to it local or through a public ip. email me if you have any questions email in QRZ Mike
@@hamradiocq Your the one that led me to buy the 7300 after the great reviews you did when you bought yours. I am there a lot and on 3.963 at 8 am Mon - Fri. quite a bit. Hope you are enjoying your new place. Looks great.
Good luck Tom.. you'll need it. I stay up all night listening to the old farts on 80.. bitching about their flex nightmares, computer nightmares, win10 nighmares, echo nightmares, etc. They spend 90% of their air time troubleshooting their systems. And complaining that Flex abandoned the ham community when they went with their military riches. I have nothing against Flex.. I'm just the devil on your shoulder I guess. Also had to laugh last week when a VERY popular net on 40 phone kept repeatedly asking everyone to "allow a second or so for Flex and remote delay". Sadly for most Flex users, the hobby becomes one of never ending tweaks and fiddling with the convoluted system.. and not talking to one another. 73
Yeah I hear what you are saying, but my issue now is, my 7300 is sitting in the garage (it used to be in the basement) and it's tied to the coax there closest to the back yard. If the weather is too hot or cold I basically don't go out there. Plus there's mice and spiders. So I end up not being on the air much. Hopefully this will work out...plus I am a Windows guy, programming is my job so I shouldn't have Win problems. Thanks fer great comment.
I can tell that you have pretty much made up your mind judging from your reply comments. The Flex radio is a fantastic system and there are many good reasons a person would want to go that route. YOUR reason, because of "running coax through the house" is not a reason to do so, in my opinion. You could easily route your coax outside (and inconspicuously) around the outside of your house without having to go through the inside of the house. You can run a single coax cable and then put a remote antenna switch at the far end if you want multiple antennas and have an aversion to multiple coax runs. Good luck with your decision.

Yeah that's true, but I need to solve this problem where I dont' want to be in the garage to operate. Plus I can always get the antenna later.
@@hamradiocqJoin a group of Flexradio and learn from the owners b4 you make your mind and sign a check. Investigate!
Did the same thing man. I had pre-ordered the IC-9700 and cancelled it to get a Flex-6600 and a transverter. More of an expensive route but works so much better. Love it! No regrets.
Thanks for sharing. I'm on backorder, he said up to 3 months. :(
@@hamradiocq That's too bad. Well trust me, it's well worth the wait.
Just curious 4 yrs later, what did you do and are you happy with your choice ?
You got that right! Radio waves !
Prepare yourself to ask you "Why those NR, NB, WNB filters are there?". 7300 NB and NR are far better than the Flex ones.

Yeah I hear ya, but the idea is I use the radio more since I don't have a proper shack.
I order a Maestor last year in August 2020 still waiting
Yeah I gave up on Flex
I did exactly what you're thinking of doing and haven't regretted it. That said, 7300 was an EXCELLENT radio and would've kept it if I didn't need the money to pay for 6600. It would still be fun to have to play with every now and then but would be rarely used w/6600 being in the shed, tbh. Go for it.
Thanks so much Palmettohorn!
I love to hear other owners talk about Flex, makes me feel like I making the right decision.
So if you lose your internet, no radio?
If I lose the internet I won't have a job either. I'm 100% online.
Very interesting. Thank you for the details. 73 de KG7LOI
Hey, quick update. I cancelled my FLex order. I was waiting 2 months and it never came so I said forget it. I'll get something else.
Hi Tom,
Everyone I know who has a Flex Radio loves them. 73 WJ3U
Wow Don. Sorry to hear that. I hope to take this journey together.
Did you sell and if so how’s the flex
Hey I did sell and I bought a Yaesu FT-DX10
Looking forward to see how this turns out for you. What antenna are you looking at.
I already own the 5BTV hustler I just need to clear the yard and install it.... big task
@@hamradiocq I'd go with the EFHW first. Easy peasy all band operation. And hey...you already have one of those, too.
Good luck! I've had a 6400 on order since September. No news of delivery yet.
They told me end of January... was that a lie? Did they take your money yet?
@@hamradiocq No, they haven't charged me yet. Today marks 11 weeks since I made the order. The last update I asked for (about a week ago) they estimated an additional 5-10 weeks on top of the original 6-8 weeks, which would put fulfillment somewhere between 11-18 weeks. We'll see I guess... I think end of January would be a little optimistic unless I just ordered at the absolute worst time.
Hi all i am still waiting for a Maestro i order it last year in August 2020 flex dont tell you any update about it
Nice bench setup!
Thanks!
@@hamradiocq I'm sure you're going to love it - looking forward to your content about SDR. It's definitely time to embrace the new paradigm.
I would spend the money on the best antenna you could possibly install. You could remote the IC-7300 with the RS-BA. Radios are just bling with compromised antennas...... until you get a 120-foot tower with stacked yagis.
well I still want to be able to operate from my office without running coax and being stuck in 1 place so, bling or not, that's some nice bling.
Yeah I mentioned in the video I got an antenna system but I need to clear the field first.
Hi, I emailed you through the Craigslist listing about your 7300. Please, let me know if you don't receive it and I'll try again.
Hey, I missed it been busy with holidays.
Great comment. Yeah, those silly XYLs dont get it do they. I've always felt the 7300 was too bulky and sensitive to take to the field imho.
Just make sure the tuner bug is fix for good before you do this
what tuner bug?
Traveller NL . Wow thanks for the link. Software problems for tuner.... and WiFi dropping? Unacceptable, at least for me, for a radio that costs so much
They are not bad radios but I would not get one for several reasons. Good luck and I hope you can sell if what you want.
Thanks myradiovideos I'm looking fwd to it... getting a lot of hate on here.
WoW Tom, to be honest I have thought highly of the 7300.... I did wonder and thought the frost got to you! Thanks Bill! I won't stop doing my normal outdoor stuff...but I'm hoping this gets me on the air more!
@@hamradiocq Speaking of....I run my 7300 portable all the time. Wouldn't try it with a flex though...too much "stuff" to tote.
I'll be on the air more with this and not be stuck to coax, plus the internet works pretty well.
I was looking closely and the Flex was using Antenna 1. You can use ONE antenna and listen and talk on two different frequencies??!!! WOW!!!!

I have a 6400M and love it. I also like using my laptop from a friends house and working remotely to it. Btw, I also still have my 7300, it's my back up. If I don't feel like waiting for the 6400M to boot up, I just use the 7300. I'll never sell that radio.

I use $50 transverters from Ebay, 2 m , 440 mhz , 220 mhz and 1.2 gig for satellite, works great in FM , CW and SSB they show up in display as normal frequencies (145.300) so you can have all modes, and all ham bands in one box. Good luck Tom.. you'll need it. Also had to laugh last week when a VERY popular net on 40 phone kept repeatedly asking everyone to "allow a second or so for Flex and remote delay".
Buy a Netgear Powerline ethernet adapter. Works through your home wiring.
I"ve heard of those
I can tell that you have pretty much made up your mind judging from your reply comments.

I love your channel name my friend. Yep, I still kinda regret my first radio sell. Maybe I'll buy that cinder block yaesu 897 again, my first radio. Excuse me while I checkout your channel.
“3, 2, 1” no sound. Sadly.
