I knew a girl I liked at work liked this anime. I had never seen it. I spent like 3 hours watching clips and learning about it just to use as an ice breaker by pretending I had seen it. Told her I liked this song too lmao. Took her all of 3 minutes to know I was full of shit. We've been together 5 years now. Guess she appreciated the effort. She of course made me watch it with her. It's great!
I love the duality of this version versus the original and how the same words can mean such different things with a change of tone. The original is angry and dark, very emo and aggressive, which matches the vibe of Tokyo Ghoul perfectly. But this version...the words are a cry for help, a whimper from someone who can't handle what's inside them anymore. This version is heartrending; I was tearing up just watching this reaction, even after watching that video countless times. I'm so glad that you are getting into anime and enjoying it so much! Check out the band itself (pronounced ling tow-shee-tay shee-goo-ray), they are a rad prog-math rock sound, super heavy (I suggest starting with 'abnormalize' from Psycho Pass)
This version is still exactly matching Tokyo Ghoul. That's why Unravel represents Kaneki and all his personas. TG is all about suffering and Kaneki's was down to 2nd to last chapter.
I think the best part of Unravel and its differences between its Acoustic versions and normal versions is how both sound so different and hold much different emotions for all of the song, but both end in a plea. While the acoustic is somber and depressing and the original is angered and almost estranged, both end in the same way, a plea to not be forgotten.
I haven't even hit play yet and I already have goosebumps. This was the first experience that I ever had with 'First Take' and I cried, I cried like a baby during this performance. The way that these guys create moments with these artists is absolutely breathtaking and TK is already a natural wonder of the world. I'm gonna watch this now and probably cry again. lets goo...

Yes, indeed this is one of the best anime openings, back in 2015-2017 (i think) this song was considered an "anthem" :) when the animation studio used this version of the opening at the end of season two, my heart broke into a thousand pieces because it fit very well with the final scenes. hope you can watch this anime soon:D

In terms of anime openings there are shounen openings that some would argue are better like silhouette from naruto for example but breaking it down to the actual song itself without considering anime personally I think unravel is one of the best songs out there and TK is one of if not the best Japanese singers I’ve ever heard

This was the first video I watched of The First Take. And damn I've fell in love with the song even more. Tokyo ghoul was my first anine after all, so it struck a chord all over again. Bought tears even. I recommend listening to the first take version of Copy Light which is also by TK.(if not the original which also sounds godly) You are gonna love it too!

As for wanting to watch the show: It's pretty good. Great at the beginning and a bit less so near the end. It's by no means bad if you don't know the source material, BUT: The Manga is legitimately so untouchable in terms of quality, it's pretty much the best thing I've ever read. The art is so insanely detailed that it'd take me multiple hours to draw a single panel in similar quality, even though I have some experience with drawing and painting. I legitimately felt bad if I glossed over a single panel so it took me pretty long to get through.
In case anyone actually reads this. I want to clarify that I still love the anime regardless of what others say. In :Re, especially the scene of Kaneki going to the Café and meeting Touka is so unbelievably good that it alone made watching that season worth it. The visuals, the narration, the music. Chef's kiss.

This would actually be my first time seeing the First Take. When I first heard the song when I got into watching the anime I was really surprised by the vocal range. Also I have a recommendation for a few songs you would like, you should check out a singer called Amalee she does English versions for anime openings, she’s done it for Sword Art Online, AOT(season 2 opening), as well as did a closing song called ‘Glassy Sky’ for the closing song in the first season of Tokyo Ghoul, she also did an English version of a song from an anime called Soul Eater(which is another good anime to watch) and she’s done English versions for many more anime’s as well.

That was when I was very new to anime, my brother had recommended the show to me. Now, years later, I still place this song on a pedestal as one of the best anime openings I've ever heard. Jeez, I cried again. I literally sobbed the 1st three replays I listened to this FIRST TAKE. Everything just came down together. TK and how he sang the song, the lyrics, and Kaneki's (the main character of TG) physical, mental and emotional pain and suffering flashing before my eyes as I read the lyrics. The song literally evolves depending on the context in the series. Highly recommend reading the manga then playing all TG openings, endings and OSTs while reading.

I totally get you, man. I heard unravel a thousand times already but the The First Take version is just out of this world (for me; of course). I have no words when I first saw it. His voice, so full of emotion. And the fact he also made his own music is just so so you know, i actually have no term for it but I just feel it. You might also want to check the song "Signal", i became a fan of TK because of it. It was also used as opening song of the anime 91 days. For his other songs, I totally recommend the Acoustique Electrick Sessions, the different arrangements of his songs there are really... again, i have no words to describe it, I could only stare and scream to explain it. Very few songs are better than this in my opinion. In my top 5 and doubt it will go below my top ten in my life time. His voice is just something. There is no word that can perfectly describe TK's voice. On a side note don't worry about being sucked in. My other favorite anime OP performance on The First Take is Queen Bee - Fire, which is the opening for the anime Dororo. If you check it out that would be amazing. The singer is also an incredible vocalist with amazing range.

I listen to a lot of Japanese music, it’s been my preference for a long time even though I don’t watch much anime anymore. I actually stumbled across TK and the band Ling Tosite Sigure and was drawn to his voice for the same reason! (Rin to-sheet-eh she-goo-reh btw, since I haven’t seen anyone mention it) Edit: TK shares vocals with a female vocalist when singing in Ling Tosite Sigure but she’s got a lovely voice too

When this was recorded was around when he did acoustic and analog live sessions. Give all his songs a different feel. In some cases they're different accompaniments he's written.
I hope that one day you will watch the anime in order to understand how perfect this song is for the story. The emotions that TK transmits are intensified when the song is heard contextualized in Tokyo Ghoul.
You said in another video that your favorite genre would be fighting with horror. This anime fits that description better than any other anime. It’s incredibly deep and the entire anime is almost poetic in a sense. It’s has some of the best character development I have ever seen and they pull no punches with the brutal torment the world puts on the characters. The entire idea for everything in the story is all genius you will not regret watching it. There is so much beauty and the fighting is insane and it’s some of the absolute best when it comes to psychological horror. If you are going to watch it the order is Tokyo ghoul, Tokyo ghoul A, Tokyo ghoul:re part 1, and then Tokyo ghoul:re part 2.
Definitely check out all of the openings of the anime : "fairy tail", it's such a vibe cuz every opening will give you diff genre of music ! You will love it 💙 and yes! Unravel is definitely on the top!

I know I am about 2 months late, but I just stumbled across your channel. I agree that TK is one of the best singers out there, however I was first introduced to him by watching Psycho Pass. His band did the opening song Abnormalize, and I just had to find out more. It's definitely worth checking out if you haven't already heard it, however I am biased since the show is in my top ten.
If you ever see the anime, you'll realize how fitting this song is. They're just perfectly made for each other.

Jeez, I cried again. I literally sobbed the 1st three replays I listened to this FIRST TAKE. Everything just came down together. TK and how he sang the song, the lyrics, and Kaneki's (the main character of TG) physical, mental and emotional pain and suffering flashing before my eyes as I read the lyrics. The song literally evolves depending on the context in the series.
Highly recommend reading the manga then playing all TG openings, endings and OSTs while reading.
This song, the lyrics, perfectly fit in with the anime and story.

I totally get you, man. I heard unravel a thousand times already but the The First Take version is just out of this world (for me; of course). I have no words when I first saw it. His voice, so full of emotion. And the fact he also made his own music is just so so you know, i actually have no term for it but I just feel it. You might also want to check the song "Signal", i became a fan of TK because of it. It was also used as opening song of the anime 91 days. For his other songs, I totally recommend the Acoustique Electrick Sessions, the different arrangements of his songs there are really... again, i have no words to describe it, I could only stare and scream to explain it. Okay, enough of this for now. 😆

Very few songs are better than this in my opinion. In my top 5 and doubt it will go below my top ten in my life time. His voice is just something. There is no word that can perfectly describe TK's voice. On a side note don't worry about being sucked in. Your not normally sucked in so if you are sucked in that just means your doing an amazing reaction. Your in your feels and that is what we as viewers are here for. Your reaction. How you as a person would view it.

As for the band name ling tosite sigure, that is the romanized version of it, if you were to pronounce it as the proper japanese word 凛として時雨, it'll be rin tow-she-tay she-goo-ray which means "cold as the late autumn rain"

My other favorite anime OP performance on The First Take is Queen Bee - Fire, which is the opening for the anime Dororo. If you check it out that would be amazing. The singer is also an incredible vocalist with amazing range.
TK is insane, i really suggest you to check out the song Signal by him, and also original version of Unravel, since not only his voice is incredible, but the music he creates is just so so good, its rocking hard!

The scene in the anime tokyo ghoul where this song is played is very emotional, tbh i cried ... The scream fits so well with the MC's feelings.

I listen to a lot of Japanese music, it’s been my preference for a long time even though I don’t watch much anime anymore. I actually stumbled across TK and the band Ling Tosite Sigure and was drawn to his voice for the same reason! (Rin to-sheet-eh she-goo-reh btw, since I haven’t seen anyone mention it)
Edit: TK shares vocals with a female vocalist when singing in Ling Tosite Sigure but she’s got a lovely voice too

Not taken away from the talents of the singer or the musicians this isn't my cup of tea. Clearly talented for sure no debate.
You said in another video that your favorite genre would be fighting with horror. This anime fits that description better than any other anime. It’s incredibly deep and the entire anime is almost poetic in a sense. It’s has some of the best character development I have ever seen and they pull no punches with the brutal torment the world puts on the characters. The entire idea for everything in the story is all genius you will not regret watching it. There is so much beauty and the fighting is insane and it’s some of the absolute best when it comes to psychological horror. If you are going to watch it the order is Tokyo ghoul, Tokyo ghoul A, Tokyo ghoul:re part 1, and then Tokyo ghoul:re part 2.
Definitely check out all of the openings of the anime : "fairy tail", it's such a vibe cuz every opening will give you diff genre of music ! You will love it 💙 and yes! Unravel is definitely on the top!

I know I am about 2 months late, but I just stumbled across your channel. I agree that TK is one of the best singers out there, however I was first introduced to him by watching Psycho Pass. His band did the opening song Abnormalize, and I just had to find out more. It's definitely worth checking out if you haven't already heard it, however I am biased since the show is in my top ten.
