Hard to watch this without crying. Danny was such a talent, and his suicide was a tragic waste. Thanks for preserving and posting these priceless lessons. Sad as it is, you can't help but laugh when he says "That is the simplest way to play guitar - believe me - no one is lazier than I am!"
totally agreed....Gatton was well ahead of his time and to this day few can touch his mastering of so many styles. The absolute Tele Master for all time.
Priceless lessons from a serious virtuoso and master technician who was also a GREAT teacher. It's really sad that we lost him. He was one of a kind and a legend in his own time. RIP Danny . . .
Im from D.C. so ive knew him before he became wider known. We called him the Humbler but he was humble himself and willing to teach anyone that asks/ I wish I wasn't such a metalhead those days ,I would pursued him more than I did. So sad , depression is much misunderstood illness. It should be researched more because the D.C. guitar players ,(and world), were robbed from a great mentor, idol, teacher
One of the greatest guitar players ever...Long live Danny in our memories and in video! Just seems like the guy you wanted to know. A gift to the world of guitar.
Back in the late '80's, when I was about 19, I worked as the shipping guy at Groove Tubes/ GT electronics. I was raised on Van Halen/ Yngwie. You remember the days. I remember one of the old country guys there lending me a Danny Gatton disc. One of those moments that gave me a whole new perspective on what can be done with a guitar.
@ Loren Poole: Even guys like Eddie Van Halen were sometimes humbled by the genius of the best country/country-rock players. I remember Eddie Van Halen talking about being at NAMM and seeing the great Albert Lee perform at the Music Man booth. EVH - a guitar giant himself who probably wasn't easily-impressed - was blown away by all of the music Lee and guys like him - guys like Danny - could do with their hybrid picking methods.
To me, while this is a style I don't pursue as much as I do fusion, I feel like Danny had a way of making what he played sound as if what he was doing was the way the guitar was meant to be played. God rest your soul, Danny Gatton. You were truly one of the greats.
'Sounds harder than it really is." Uh...didn't he mean to say it really is hard. LOL I was so fortunate to have lived in the DC area and saw Danny perform many times. What a great guitarist and an even nicer human being. We miss ya Danny.
he was an amazing player, and he put some of these so called rock stars to shame 10 times over, he could have gone mainstream 10 times over, he was approached lots of times, in once case he said he would sighn a deal and he never turned up lol, he was not interested in being a commercial money making pit for corporate twats, he was about the music, that's why I loved Danny Gatton
Wow i usually hate guitar "HOW TO PLAY" videos,d.v.d,s, but he makes it look so simple, you would even try it as apposed to other instructional videos, when you just say i can,t play as good as that...like how he shows you the right hand without any chords....GENIUS...!!!!
really getting into my country playing (travis, banjo rolls etc) and I feel like an absolute beginner again. This stuff is fucking hard man! Then you get Gatton just rolling this stuff off like it's nothing. What a loss to the guitar world. Great player.
amen to that. I was spacing out for a second and doing something else while listening to this video, and then all of a sudden I heard him do that crazy line after the slow rythm playing at 2:36, needless to say I was surprised
The back/forward combo from 5:30- I'm starting to figure it out. I got stuck with 16ths at 100 bpm, and realized you have to keep the pick really close to the strings so its ready for that upstroke before the pattern repeats. It still feels like my fingers are getting in the way of eachother but I have to excuse his fingers are way fatter than mine
'Sounds harder than it really is'. No Danny, it really is hard :-) I'm another just getting into playing like this, well, trying and mostly failing. He makes it look so effortless, whilst I'm gurning away. So sad that such a talent left this world that way.
OK....sure....I can do that.....maybe in another life. For him it was simple. He was a talent beyond us all. I'll try. This instructional serious is phenomenal. and I'll improve from it....but let's face it guys......nobody can do this but Danny. If there's someone out there......please get back to us......I'm not holding my breath......
"Awright kid, you got that"? What an awesome musician. I feel a little bit better when I remember hearing Lenny play live. Apparently Danny thought Lenny was the "best". Incredible players with sad endings.
@Fractaloid There is a reason for that. Both Danny and Roy Buchannon's wives waited years to let anything out. Two people have the rights to distribute his stuff or so I am told ( I knew both guys). If you want more then go to Tom Principato's web site. I am sure he can help you find more since he is one of the two chosen ones.

Colynkebralex- "after you have learned everything there is to know about music" ??!!!!! Hate to break it to you, but nobody knows everything there is to know about music. But I certainly agree that DG got a hell of a lot closer than most.
@Fractaloid SORRY, it would not let me reply directly to you. There is a reason for not seeing much on Danny. Both of these DC boys, Danny and Roy Buchannon's families waited years to really let anything out. Probably a trust issue. @s1914 Sometimes I think the final straw for Danny was when grunge went crazy and took over the music scene. He was probably extra depressed that people who could play a few chords could gain such admiration. Meanwhile, a true virtuoso like himself could hardly even get on the radar. The real players and session people and those in the know gave Danny the highest possible marks; they knew his dedication and skill was way beyond what most can hope to achieve. But depression is a painful foe. Sad.
ITs funny but when you play a tune over and over again your hands just move its like your not their, but to stop and slow down and show it to someone it is got to be so tough. especially appregios and finger picking where its all feel and tempo.
i had a hard time with Danny killing himself. He was @ his prime and was having success that he deserved. Makes you shake your head that somebody could have seen this coming but i wish he would have realized how much he meant to all of us. I listen to his music and just shake my head. Master for sure!
All the great tele guys killed themselves. Him and Roy . Always wondered if it was the bright tele tones that could cause some sort of brain issue.... Damn shame, wonderful guitarists.
These Gatton Lesson Videos are GOD'S GIFT TO THE WORLD ... if you're a Guitar Player.

Greatest guitarist that ever lived to me ! Bless you Danny !!
What a treasure to have, an instructional video of a GREAT guitar player. I cannot believe how he plays!

This is one of the best lessons on hybrid picking on youtube. I can't thank you enough for posting this! I'll be sure to check out your others.
Simply the Best there ever was !!!

Danny You were the best, so sorry your gone, I play a cd of his before every gig to get insperaition
he had such a great understanding of the basic musicality...so many just memorize, he knew the music
Bloody hell... what a great video!!! Danny is truly the Telemeister!!!
'Sounds harder than it really is."

if only youtube existed back then, god wouldent have had to take danny from us for his guitar lessons.

Kewl! I love watching this guy play guitar!
Pure genius!
Alright Kid, Ya got that? Damn!
as great as he is/was to even be able to break it down to a high intermediate level is just another example of his badassness
Thank you Mr. Danny
@whatishe true that,Im with ya on that and Ive been playing for 22 years, this is why danny gatton was called "THE HUMBLER"
amen to that. I was spacing out for a second and doing something else while listening to this video, and then all of a sudden I heard him do that crazy line after the slow rythm playing at 2:36, needless to say I was surprised
Great Guitarist and Picker!!
superb player
Sometimes even God gets lucky. Now he can listen to Allan Holdsworth and Danny Gatton whenever he feels like.
R.I.P., you invincible geniuses...
I am a huge fan of both and I had NO IDEA that Holdsworth was gone! .... (nicely said C N)
I've been playing guitar for 16 years, I feel like I just started playing..
magical!

wow, what a gem of a video. he must have died shortly after recording this? RIP in 1994.
This guy was a fantastic player.
'Sounds harder than it really is'. No Danny, it really is hard :-)

Such a shame he's gone.
"I am a Pilgrim" Merle Travis ~ late 1940s or early 1950s.
Thank you so much for that. It will take me years to get into it, but its worth it…
i'm crying!
the f# is played "2x222x". instead of the picking pattern "6,4,5,3" he skips down a string to "6,3,4,2". hope this helps.
Good teacher.
OK....sure....I can do that.....maybe in another life. For him it was simple. He was a talent beyond us all. I'll try. this guy was just unreal
The Best.
"Awright kid, you got that"? What an awesome musician. I feel a little bit better when I remember hearing Lenny play live. Apparently Danny thought Lenny was the "best". Incredible players with sad endings.

I think Danny Gatton (RIP) is my new teacher
:) confirmed.. He was a genius.

thats very true...damn...its seems like ive mesmorized more than i have just known, i should get around to fix it

what is the name of the song started at the 0:22?
Yep! That’s why I stopped playing a Tele and gave up hope of ever playing guitar!!!
"and you can throw in the Travis stuff"..... yeah, or - you probably can't.
Danny actually tought Je bonamassa how to play a lot of double stop stuff years ago, the man walked on water,
I wish I could have mind melted with DG. Is it my right fingers alone that rebel? More practice needed I think.
Does anyone know where to get those white fender jazz picks danny used? I haven't been able to find them in years
Where is #4 with the banjo licks? :-(
Kormos János Could you tell me if you find it please? I'm looking too!
Danny Gatton - Licks and Tricks 4 /watch?v=YboFo8tsBLE
Nathan Bedford Forrest They’re all on this guys channel but they haven’t appeared in the suggestions of this video.
"alright kid, you got that?".... Nope!!
Someone please tell me the name of these songs so I can look up the tabs.

He makes me want to burn my guitar at first but ultimately he's inspiring.
